This invention relates to apparatus for coating material which may be in separate pieces of non-uniform thickness or of irreguar shape such as tire patches.
The general purpose of the invention is to provide an apparatus for effectively applying a coating to one side only of such material such as to the convex side of concaro-convex skived tire patches.
A further purpose of the invention is to provide means associated with the coating apparatus for depositing the coated articles on a surface such as a conveyor belt with their coated faces uppermost.
The foregoing and other purposes of the invention are attained in the apparatus il,
lust-rated in the accompanying drawings and described herein. 1t is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific form thereof shown and described.
Of the accompanying drawings,
Fio'ure 1 is a rear view of apparatus embodying the invention; and
Figure 2 is a section on line 2 2 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, the numerals 10, 1() designate suitable supports on which are mounted brackets 11, 11 in which are journaled a pair of cooperating rolls 12 and 13. Roll 12 is journaled in bearing blocks 14, 14 arranged in slots 15, 15 in bracket members and roll 13 is `iournaled on a spindle 16 secured in blocks 17 17 also slidable in slots 15. Blocks 1a and 17 are spaced apart by spacer bars 187 18 about which are coil springs 19, 19 normally tending to urge blocks 14 and 17 apart. A screw 20 threaded through a plate 21 on top of each bracket 11 is adapted to hold blocks 17 against spacers 1S against the expansive actions of springs 19.V
Roll 12 dips in a reservoir 22 for the coat- *toll y12 may be driven by a pulley 12 on its shaft 12a, this shaft having a gear 23 thereon meshing with a gear 2K1 secured to roll13 to drive the latter.
Brackets 25, 25 may be secured on shaft 16 to support a guide bar 26 over which patches P may be fed to the rolls as shown and these brackets may also support a scraper 27 pivotaliy mounted as'at 28,' 23 and adapted to be urged against the roll 13 by screws 29, 29 threaded through plate 30 into engagement with projecting lugs 31,"31 attached to the scraper 27.
A rranoed in the path. of the issuing patches P rearwardly andbeneath the rear bight of the rolls 12 and 13 are a number of rotary spiders 32 adapted to support and feed `the issuing patches in such a way as to fiip them over onto their faces as they drop'froin the rolls onto a surface such as conveyor'belt 33. The spider 32 may be mounted on a shaft 32a adapted to be received in any one of a number of bearing receptacles 3/1, 34 to adjust the position ofthe spiders toward or from the rolls to adapt the machine for patches of different sizes. The shaft 32 may be driven by a pulley 35 over which may be trained a belt 36 which is driven by a pulley 37 on shaft- 121.
To prevent adherence of the coated matei-iai or patch to the rollers 13 and 14 a series of fingers 38, 38 and 38a, 33il are provided on the rear side thereof extending tangentially into proximity to the periphery thereof. These lingers 38 may be carried by supports 39, 39 on a cross bar L10 and the fingers 33 may be directly carried on a bar 40a, the bars L10 and 410*l extending between the bracket members 11.
In operation, the patches P are fed to theV As the patches pass from the rolls the lead- ,Gli

ing ends engage the spider 32 which so feed lthe patches outwardly that upon issuing from the rolls the patches are flipped over onto their non-coated faces (Figure 2) on conveyor 33.
It will be apparent that the invention is not limited either to the specific use thereof or to the particular embodiment thereof. Accordingly, modifications thereof may be resorted to without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
l/Vhat is claimed is z- Y l. Apparatus for coating the convex face only of concavo-convex tire patches, said apparatus comprising a pair of driven rolls, the lower roll of which has a yielding surface to conform to the surface of a patch passed between the rolls, means for applying a layer of coating material to the yielding' roll, means for ieinoving such material from the other roll, a receiving surface positioned below the rolls7 and rotary means adjacent the delivery side of the rolls adapted to engage the pieces issuing therefrom and impart such a motion to the pieces that they alight on the receiving` surface with coated side uppermost, the pieces being unsupported between the said rotary means and the receiving surface.
2. Apparatus for coating the convex Vside only of concave-convex tire patches,7 said apparatus comprising a pair of driven rolls, the
lower roll of which has a yielding surface to conform to the surface of a patch passed be tween the rolls, means for applying a layer of coating material to the yielding roll, means for removing such material from the other roll, a receiving surfacevpositioned be low the rolls, and means comprising rotary spiders adjacent the rear side of the rolls for engaging the pieces issuing therefrom and flipping them over so that they fall onto the receiving surface on their uncoated faces, the pieces being unsupported between the spiders and the receiving surface. Y
3. A combination as deflnedin claim 2 in which the receiving surface is a conveyor.
