This invention relates to improvements in feeding machines for printing presses. It is particularly adapted to feeding to intaglio presses for multi-color work, al though adapted to single color work as well.
The objects of the invention are:
First, to provide such a feeding machine which will effectively feed the paper to the press and then carry it forward through a Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail plan View of a broken section of the endless sheet-metal feeding belt.

The parts will be identified by their numerals of reference.
1 and 2 are conventional illustrations of intaglio printing presses raised up on suitable supports to give space beneath the presses for the passage of the endless conveyor. 8 is the drier shown conventionally through which the endless conveyor passes to drive a printed sheet.
4 is the endless sheet metal conveyor disposed over the carrying rolls 5, 6, 7 and 8. 9 is an idler which is one way of securing effective tension on the said conveyor '4.

One or more of the rollers might be spring supported and accomplish the same purpose. 10 is a driven pulley to actuate the feed means, the same being driven from pulley 11 or other suitable means.
12 is an adjustable wrist pin carried by the pulley 10. 13 is a pawl pivoted to the wrist pin and is connected to a feed slide 14 consisting of a piece of sheet metal folded over the edge of the conveyor 4 and slotted at 41. Pawl 13 terminates in a feed hook 15 and is supported and guided by a downturned car 16 on the said slide 14. The car 16 is slotted at 161 and receives pin 131 on the end of the pawl 13. A spring 132 connects the end of the pawl to the said slide and holds the said pawl yieldingly It will thus be seen that 'on the rotation of the pulley 10, the conveyor 4 is advanced step by step, the distance of the advance depending on the adjustment of the wrist pin 12. The conveyor 4 is perforated at 41, 41 for engagement by the said hook 15 of and support the same 1n position. A pair of similar lugs 44, 44 are on the cross piece 43, one side being inclined downwardly and the other, the front side is perpendicular so that a sheet of paper placed between these lugs will drop to a definite predetermined printing position against the perpendicular front face of the lugs. Operators, it will be seen, place the sheets 17 one at a time on the conveyor 4 and the same are advanced in timed relation to the printing presses 1 and 2. the same sheet will be delivered in exact register to the printing press 2 where an additional printing in red or in any other color may take place. It is clear that as many colors may be printed on the sheet in proper register in this way as there are printing presses employed. WVhen it is desired to print but a single color the paper would be advanced two steps at a time, the presses being disposed in alternate relation to each other, the first press being on an even number and the second press being on an odd number if the printing points of the belt were numbered.
I show press 1 with double dies, which enables two colors to be done by the single press. Of course two one color sheets could be printed at each operation of this press.
I haveshown myimproved feeding device in a very simple form. The thing that is of principal consequence is the continu one sheet metal belt with the appropriate stops disposed thereon'with printing spaces cut therethrough, actuated step by step by a ratchet or any other suitable means.
I provide a safety device, in the event that the printing is stopped for any reason or the feed device is stopped, which consists of a motor 18 belted to pulley 19 to drive roll Sand consequently advance all paper on the belt promptly through the drier so tion broadly as pointed out in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
i 1. In a feeding machine for printing presses, the combination of an endless sheet metal conveyor having apertures formed therein to permit the support and printing of sheets carried by the said conveyor, lug stops beveled at one side and perpendicular on the other disposed at each side of the said conveyor to permit the introduction of sheets and cause them-to slide. against said stops at one side, pairs of upwardly extending lug stops between the said'apertures the front faces of which are perpendicular to the conveyor and the backs of which are in clined, wherebya sheet dropped between the said stops will go against the vertical faces of its stops and be accurately located against the side stops, slots for the engagement of a feeding means at one side of said conveyor,
drums for said endless conveyor, a plurality of printing presses through which said conveyor is disposed adapted to print sheets carriedthereby, the said presses being disposed to print the sheets one. at a. time successively in different colors, a drier embrac;
ing the upper run of the said conveyor for drying the sheets after they have been printed, an intermittent feed means comprising a rotary pulley, an adjustable wrist pin thereon, a pawl pivoted to said wrist pin provided with'a hook engaging portion, a slide adapted to reciprocate on the edge of the said conveyor slotted, to correspond with the slots in the said conveyor, a depending slottedear on the said slide for guiding the said pawl, a cross pin through the said pawl extending into the said slot, and a tension spring connected at one end to the said slide and at the opposite end to said pawl to urge the same yieldingly into engagement with the said conveyor, coacting to advance the said conveyor intermittently step by step, and an independent motor connected to drive the said conveyor to advance the printed sheets through the drier in the event that printing is interrupted. In a feeding machine for printing presses, the combination of an endless sheet metal conveyor having apertures. formed therein to permit the support and printing of sheets carried by the said conveyor, lug stops beveled at one side and perpendicular on the other disposed at each side of the said conveyor to permit the introduction of sheets and cause them to slide against said stops at one side, pairs of upwardly extending lug stops between the said apertures the front faces of which are perpendicular to the conveyor and the backs of which are inclined, whereby a sheet dropped between the 3 said stopswill go against the vertical faces of its stops and be accurately located against the side stops, slots for the-engagement of a. feeding means at one side of said conveyor, drums for said endless conveyor, a plurality of printing presses through which said conveyor is disposed adapted to print sheets carried thereby, the said presses being disposed to print the sheets one at a time successively in different colors, a drier embracing the upper run of the said conveyor for drying the sheets after they have been printed, an intermittent feed means comprising a rotary pulley, an adjustable 'wrist pin thereon, a pawl pivoted to said a-depending slotted earon the said slide for l guiding the said pawl, across pin through the saidpawl extending into the said slot, and a tension spring connected at-one end to the said slide and at the opposite end to said pawl to urge the same yieldingly into engagement with the said conveyor, coacting to advance the said conveyor intermittently step by step. In, a feeding machine for printing presses, the combinationof an endless sheet metal conveyor having apertures formed therein to permit the support and printing of sheets carried by the said conveyor, lug stops beveled at one side and perpendicular on the other disposed at each side of the said conveyor to permit the introduction of sheets and cause them to slide against said stops at one side, pairs of upwardly extending lug stops between the said apertures the front faces of which are perpendicular to the conveyor and the backs of which are inclined, whereby a sheet dropped between the said stops will go against the vertical faces of its stops and be accurately located against the side stops, slots for the engagement of a feeding means at one side of said conveyor, drums for said endless conveyor, a plurality of printing presses through which said conveyor is disposed, adapted to print sheets carried thereby, the said presses being disposed to print the sheets one at a time successively in different colors, a drier embracing the upper run of the said conveyor for drying the sheets after they have been printed, and an intermittent feed means to advance the said conveyor step by step.
4. In a feeding machine for printing presses, the combination of an endless sheet metal conveyor iaving apertures formed therein to permit the support and printing of sheets carried by the said conveyor, lug stops beveled at one side and perpendicular on the other disposed at each side of the said conveyor to permit the introduction of sheets and cause them to slide against said stops at one side, pairs of upwardly extending lug stops between the said apertures the front faces of which are perpendicular to the conveyor and the backs of which are inclined, whereby a sheet dropped between the said stops will go against the vertical faces of its stops and be accurately located against the side stops, slots for the engagement of a feeding means at oneside of said conveyor, drums for said endless conveyor, a plurality of printing presses through which said conveyor is disposed adapted to print sheets carried thereby, the said presses being disposed to print the sheets one at a time successively in different colors, and an intermittent feed means to advance the said conveyor step by step.
5. In a feeding machine for printing presses, the combination of an endless sheet metal conveyor having apertures formed therein to permit the support and printing of sheets carried by the said conveyor, lug stops beveled at one side and perpendicular on the other disposed at each side of the said conveyor to permit the introduction of sheets and cause them to slide against said stops at one side, pairs of upwardly extending lug stops between the said apertures the front faces of which are perpendicular to the conveyor and the backs of which are inclined, whereby a sheet dropped between the said stops will go against the vertical faces of its stops and be accurately located against the side stops, slots for the engagement of a feeding means at one side of said conveyor, drums for said endless conveyor, and an intermittent feed means to advance the said conveyor stepby step;
6. In a feeding machine for printing presses, the combination of an endless sheet metal conveyor having apertures formed therein to permit the support and printing of sheets carried by the said conveyor, lug stops beveled at one side and perpendicular on the other disposed at each side of the said conveyor to permit the introduction of sheets and cause them to slide against said stops at one side, pairs of upwardly extending lug stops between the said apertures the front faces of which are perpendicular to the conveyor and the backs of which are inclined, whereby a sheet dropped between the said stops will go against the vertical faces of its stops and be accurately located against the side stops, slots for the engagement of a feeding means at one side of said conveyor,

7. In a feeding machine for printing presses, the combination of an endless sheet metal conveyor having apertures formed therein to permit the support and printing of sheets carried by the said conveyer, guide stops associated with each aperture to hold sheets in printing position, slots for the engagement of a feeding means at one side of said conveyor, drums for said endless conveyor, an intermittent feed means comprising a ro tary pulley, an adjustable wrist pin thereon, a pawl pivoted to said wrist pin provided with a hook engaging portion, a slide adapted to reciprocate on the edge of the said conveyor slotted to correspond with the slots in the said conveyor, a depending s10tted ear on the said slide for guiding the said pawl, a cross pin through the said pawl extending into the said slot, and a tension spring connected at one end to the said slide and at the opposite end to said pawl to urge the same yieldingly into engagement with the said conveyor, coacting to advance the said conveyor intermittently step by step.
8. In a feeding machine for printing presses, the combination of an endless sheet metal conveyor having apertures formed therein to permit the support and printing of sheets carried by the said conveyor, guide stops associated with each aperture to holdsheets in printing position, slots for the engagement of a feeding means at one side of said conveyor, drums for said endless conveyor, and an intermittent feed means to advance the said conveyor step by step.
