Description

G. W. MARTIN.
COMBINED LAMP-CHIMNEY, SHADE AND GLOBE.
Patented May15, 1877.
INVENTOR 971/.
ATTORNEY WITNESSES N. FEIERS. PHD
TOJJTHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON, D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. MARTIN, OF CHELSEA, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED LAMP CHIMNEY, SHADE, AND GLOBE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 190,882, dated May 15, 1877; application filed February 10, 1677.
To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. MARTIN, of (lhelsea, in the county of Sufiblk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Combined Lamp Chimney, Shade, and Globe; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure I of thedrawings is a representation of a side view of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section thereof.
This invention has relation to combined lamp chimneys, shades, and globes; and it consists of a base-bulb surmounted by a conical portion, the base of which has a horizontal re-entrant portion at right angles, or nearly so, to the walls of the conical portion, which latter is of greater horizontal and vertical dimensions than the globe, and is connected therewith by a concave neck, all as hereinafter shown and described.
In theaccompanying drawings, the letter A designates the globular or bulbous portion of the chimney, having a base-flange, a, or attachment for the burner-base. At the upper end of the bulb portion the chimney or globe is somewhat contracted to forma neck, b, from which the wall is expanded outward, as indicated at c, forming an under or base shoulder, from the outer portion of which the conical upper or shade portion at extends upward and toward the axis of the chimney, terminating in an open upper end or tube, 0.
This form of chimney may be used alone; or it may be passed like a shade over a chimney of narrow cylindrical form.
This chimney or shade is especially adapted to be provided with reflecting or ornamented surfaces. The upper or conical portion, when covered with gold or silver over a ground or smooth surface, will form a durable reflector.
Instead of covering the whole conical surface with the metal, it may be only partially covered, that portion not covered being left plain or ground. The light will be reflected by the interior of the bright conical surface downward and outward through the under or base portion 0, which is left transparent.
Below, the bulb may be similarly finished with an entire or partial reflecting-surface. These reflecting-surfaces may be made plain, or may be highly ornamented by the use of patterns and the sand-blast, or otherwise.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combined lamp chimney, shade, and globe, consisting of the bulb A, with its reflectingsurface, connected by shoulder a with conical portion al, also provided with reflecting-surface, and arranged substantially as specified.
2. The combined lamp chimney, shade, and globe, consisting of the base-bulb A, surmounted by a conical portion, (1, the base of which has a horizontal re-entrant portion, 0, at right angles, or nearly so, to the walls of the conical portion, which latter is of greater horizontal and vertical dimensions than the globe, and connected to the globe by a concave neck, b, substantially as specified.
3. The combined lamp chimney, shade, and globe, consisting of the base-bulb A, surmounted by the conical reflecting-wall d, the base of which is connected to the neck of the globe by a transparent shoulder, a, through which the light passes from the interior reflecting-surface of said wall, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto'subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
GEO. W. MARTIN.
