Description
F. B. KUEHNHOLD.
BRIDLE-BIT.
No- 190,876. Patented May15,1877.
Invert/67 J7 6 @ML@ UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
FERDINAND B. KUEHNHOLD, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN BRlDLE-BITS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 190,876, dated May 15, 1877; application filed April 2, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FERDINAND B. KUEHN- HOLD, of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bits for Horses and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and totheletters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates more especially to that class of bits having a joint at the center, and has for its object the controlling of vicious horses.
The accompanying drawing illustrates the nature and character of the invention, in which- Figure 1 represents an ordinary jointed bit, provided with my improved attachment, and
Fig. 2 shows a modification of the same, and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view, the parts being designated by similar letters in each figure.
My invention consists in a hook, A, constructed and adapted to be attached to, and detached from, the bit or mouth-piece B at pleasure, instead of being a permanent attachment, as has been the case heretofore.
By means of this improvement a bridle may be used, either with a gentle or a vicious horse, by simplyattaching or detaching the hook, as the case may require, thereby avoid ing the necessity of having to fasten the attachment to the check-pieces when not in use,
and also the annoyance occasioned by their rattling, as will be obvious.
If deemed necessary a snap, a, as indicated in Fig. 2, may be combined with the hook to preventit being accidentally detached, though, as a rule this will not be necessary, as all jointed bits of this kind are smallest at the center, and the hooks, being contracted at c, are designed to admit of their being adjusted at the smallest part of the hit only, and then moved to their positions near the ends, where it is impossible for said hooks to be removed, as will be readily understood.
It will be observed that the hooks are provided with a loop or loops, 6, by which to secure the straps or reins, said loops being round or angular, as may be preferred. The ends also of said books at 0 should be bent or twisted outward slightly, so as to prevent them from catching accidentally into a horses lip or mouth, as indicated in Fig. 1.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a bridle-bit, B, jointed at the center, of the detachable hooks A contracted at c, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as iny own, I hereto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FERDINAND B. KUEHN HOLD.
Witnesses:
OLIVER DRAKE, I. B. FAITOUTE.
