This invention relates to a method of and means for covering hand luggage, and more particularly to a means wherein the covering is secured and sealed to the case of hand luggage without visibility of the covering edges and without requiring the use of tacks or a sewed binding.

Heretofore, a reinforcing molding provided as an edging on hand luggage such as trunks and the like has been applied to the trunk over the covering thereof for ornamental edging purposes, to take up wear, and as a covering for seams. Such application of molding did not provide a water or dust proof joint of the covering and did not provide a maximum ornamental effect, because a gap was left between the molding and the trunk body owing to variations in the wood veneer forming the trunk case or body. This result was unsightly, and the molding strip was also subject to displacement when it contacted an object with any substantial degree offorce, in the handling ofthe luggage or otherwise.

An object is to provide a new and novel method of and means for covering hand luggage wherein the covering'and a molding strip are associated and secured together by means of a filler member that presents a seamless molding strip.

An object of this invention is toprovide a seamless molding strip wherein hand luggage is provided with an invisible reinforcing member and a seamless, dust and water proof, and apparent continuous covering.

An object is to provide hand luggage with a simple and durable hidden reinforcement member that will provide substantial protection for the edge of the luggagebody and whichalso aids in securing the ends of the luggage covering to the body without the use of tacks or a sewed edging and which will be ornamental, and when applied becomes an integral part of the luggage.

Another object is to provide a novel method of and means for securing a covering to the body or case of hand luggage, such as trunks, in a water and dust proof manner without using tacks, and sewed binding, or

member or edging to the body of hand luggage, such as trunks, and then applying a covering material to the trunk body and securing the ends of the covering material in the reinforcing member or edging by means "of a filler strip without using tacks, is that a waterproof and dust proof joint of the cove *ing material is obtained and the filler strip also finishes the luggage so as to present a smooth, neat appearing article in which a hidden reinforcement is provided and which will not shift relative to the luggage body when contacted.

The invention includes the method of cov ering hand luggage as well as the combination of parts more particularly hereinafter set forth and described and claimed.

Other objects, advantages, and features of invention may appear from the accompanying drawing, the subjoined detailed description and the appended claims.

The accompanying drawing illustrates the invention in a form I at present deem preferable.

Figure 1 is a-perspective view of a piece of hand luggage constructed in accordance with my invention.

Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmental view of a corner of the luggage shown in Fig. 1. Parts are broken away to disclose parts 0therwise hidden.

Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of a corner of the hand luggage shown in Fig. 1.

In carrying out my invention the luggage case 1 which is usually of three or more ply veneer wood or other suitable base material, is of the form desired and to such case 1, I apply at the desired point preferably at the transverse edges 2 thereof a bendable molding strip 3 that is preferably of metal and provided with a base portion 4: and upstanding and inwardly curved flanged edges 5 that form an open groove or channel 6. The molding strip 3 is preferably secured tothe case by nails or tacks 7 that extend through the base portion 4 at any suitable predetermined intervals therealong and are clinched at their inner ends in a manner customary in the art, and such strip 3 may be bent so as to extend around the corners of the case.

A flexible covering material 8 is cut to the desired contour and shape so as to cover the case between the strips 3 and then it is glued to the case 1 and the edges of the covering adjacent the molding strip are extended over one flange 5 and into the groove 6 and the covering is preferably so cut that the edges terminate on the base portion t as shown in Fig. 3 although they may lap each other a short distance. The covering material is extended into the groove 6 and fitted over the molding while it is still wet from the glue by which it is secured to the case.

In order to complete the covering of the trunk and finish and seal the joint to make a waterproof and 'dustproof joint of the covering, and to ornament the case, a flexible and resilient filler strip 9 which may be of a color contrasting with the color of the covering, is pressed into the groove 6 and is held therein by its elasticity and frictional engagement with the inner sides of the flanges 5. The filler strip 9 may be a soft rubber base covered with a finish or surfacing material, not shown.

If desired, ornamental metal corner pieces 10 may then be securely fixed to the corners of the luggage by the rivets or tacks 11 and such other suitable hardware as desired may be afiixedrto the luggage, and such corner pieces and hardware do not form a part of this application, but the right to describe and claim the same in a separate application is hereby reserved;

The open ends of the molding strip 3 that otherwise would occur at the opening 12 of the luggage are closed by clips 13 which also add to the ornamentality of the trunk.

From the foregoing it will be seen that my 'novel method of covering luggage comprises aflixing a molding to the case 1 then applying a covering material to the case and extending its outer edges into a groove formed in the molding and then inserting a filler strip into said groove and sealing the covering edges therein, and closing the ends of the strip 3.

My novel method and construction of covering luggage provides by the strip 3, a reinforcement for the trunk which in the finished article is hidden from view and the protuberance formed by the molding strip 3 adds to the ornamentality of the luggage.

Also the molding 3 being underneath the covering 8 will be securely held in place by the covering and rivets 7 so that the strip 3 will not be easily displaced when encountered by foreign objects in use. Furthermore, the covering 8 by being placed over the molding 3will effectively close any gap that may be present between the base portion 4 of strip 3 and the case 1, thereby insuring maximum neatness in appearance and smoothness of corners. Then by finishing the luggage with the filler 9 the luggage is provided with a dust and waterproof covering that is secured to the case without visibility of tacks, or sewing which usually forms a welt edge. In this manner, the covering is sealed into the molding and the edges of the covering finished in a highly ornamental manner.

' Although I have shown my invention as applied to a style of luggage shown in Fig. 1, I do not wish to be limited to such a piece of hand luggage, as my invention may be used on other pieces of luggage without departing from the spirit of my invent-ion as defined in the appended claims.

I claim:

1. The combination of a luggage case; a channeled molding strip fixed to said case; a covering for said case, the edges of which covering are extended into the channel of said strip; and a filler in said channel for sealing the edges of said covering into said channel.

2. The combination of a luggage case; a channeled molding strip fixed to said case; a covering glued to said case, the edges of which covering are extended into the channel of said strip; and a resilient and flexible filler'in said channel for sealing the edges of said covering into said channel.

3. The combination with a luggage case and a covering material secured thereto; of a metal grooved molding secured to said case under said covering material; the edges of said covering material being inserted in said groove; anda resilient filler strip inserted in the groove of said molding over the edges of the covering material.

4. In luggage, a case; a grooved molding strip secured directly to said case; covering material secured to said case and over said strip and having its edges adjacent said strip extended into the groove in said strip; and a filler in said groove over the edges of the covering material therein.

5. In hand luggage, a case; a grooved molding strip fixed to said case adjacent and around the ends thereof; covering material for said case having its ends adjacent the strip extended into the groove in said strip; and means in said groove adapted to cover the endsof said covering and retain said ends in said groove.
