omrnn STATES PATENT curios.
JAMES M. CONNEL AND JOHN CONNEL, OF NEWARK, OHIO- MACI-IINE FOR BLACKING BOOTS, SHOES, 8w.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 19,075, dated January 12, 1858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J. M. CONNEL and J. CONN-EL, of Newark, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for Cleaning, Blacking, and Polishing Boots and Shoes; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a top view of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of same, and Fig. 3 is a View showing adjustment of blacking box.
Similar characters of reference in the several figures denote the same part.
The nature of our invention consists in a shaft on which is mounted, cleaning, blacking, and polishing brush wheels, and an adjustable blacking box for the supply of the blacking wheels, the details of construction and operation being as follows:
In the drawing A is a bench serving as a seat for the operator.
B is the shaft, having its bearings in standards a b, and rotated by power applied to treadle C, through crank D and connecting rod D. On this shaft are the brush wheels W, W W. Upon the standard a is a semi-circular box E, capable of sliding thereon, when moved by means of screw F, as shown in Fig. 3.
The box E is adjusted so that brush W when revolving will be supplied with blacking. The boot is held against wheel W which removes the dirt. It is then applied to wheel WV which coats it with blacking. The friction of brush W performs the polishing. As the blacking in box E is consumed the box is elevated by screw F.
We do not claim rotary brushes as polishwitnesses.
