J. L. THOMAS BALANCED VALVE Filed Dec. 27, 1930 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 Inventor A llomey Patented May 2, 1933 tlNiTED STATES EMMETT T. BRUCE, ONE-FOURTH TO WILLIAM-D. FAVGETT, AND ELMEB F. ROSS, ALL OF OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA A E tjerri-cs JACK LEE THOMAS, OF OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA, .AS SIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH TO ONE-FQURTH 'ro BALANCED VALVE;
Application filed December 27, 1930. Serial 1\To[505,181.
tlon and arrangement of the several parts,
to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like character denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through the invention.
Figure 2 is a section on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an elevation of the valve.
Figure t is a top plan view thereof.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the valve body or casing which is formed with a laterally extending inlet 2 at one side thereof and with an outlet 3 at its bottom part. Between the inlet and outlet ports the casing is formed with a partition l extending entirely across the casing. This partition 4 divides the casing into the upper chamber 13 and the lower chamber 14 and said partition has the elongated arcuate slots or ports 6 therein for placing the upper chamber in communication with the lower chamber. A recess 7 is formed in the center of the top part of the partition and forms a balancing chamber which is connected with theupper chamber of the valve casing by a passage 8. As will be seen the ports or slots 6 are arranged around the chamber 7.
The valve comprises a cylindrical stem 9 having arcuate Wings 10 adjacent its lower end for controlling the ports 6. The lower end of the valve is closed and a part of this closed end is adapted to fit in the chamber 7 when the valve is in closed position as clearly shown in Figure l.
The top part of the valve casing is'closed by a cover 11 having a-packing gland 12 thru which the upper end of the valve stem pass-es. It will of course be understood that a suitable handle is connected to the upper end of the stem 9 for turning the valve to open and close the ports or slots 6; From the foregoing it will be seen that the fluid entering the upper chamber of the valve casing will pass through the ports 6 when the valve is in open position and this fluid will pass through the discharge 3. When the valve is in closed position the wings 10 cover the ports 6 and thus stop the flow of fluid through the casing but some of the fluid will pass through the passage Sinto the chamber 7 to balance the valve. The balancing effect of the valve is made possible by making the area of the chamber 7 slightly smaller than the area of the wings 10. By making the valve steln 9 of the same outer diameter as the exterior diameter of the chamber forming parts of the partition orseat and the stem 9 of the samediameter throughout the pressure in the upper chamber of the casing cannot act on any part of the same. This valve is a one-way pressure valve used as steam throttles, boiler blow-off valves, escape valves on oil and gas wells, release valves for high pressure pumps both fluid and vapor, and for low pressure water or other fluid where a very sensitive float is required.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim as new is A balancing valve comprising a casing having a partition therein dividing the casing into upper and lower chambers, said par- .90 Having thus described invention, what 7 tition having ports therein and a centrally located balancing chamber opening out through the top face of the partitlon, and said partition having a conduit connected to said balancing chamber and the top chamber of the casing, a valve comprising a cylindrical hollow stem the same diameter throughout, and having wings thereon adjacent its lower end for closing the ports, 5 the lower end of the valve closing the balancing chamber leaving a space between itself and the bottom of the chamber, a detachable cover for the valve casing having a gland therein through which the stem passes, an inlet for the upper chamber of the casing and a discharge for the lower chamber thereof, the area of the balancing chamber being slightly smaller than the area of the Wings.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
