Description

May 2, 1933. A. STOEGER AUXILIARY CALLING DIAL Filed Oct. 11, 1932 R 5 T0 mr 3 N m A BY 4 I .v
ATTORNEY Patented May 1933' UNITED sT TEs nu'rousronona, or rimsmims'r, NEW YORK' PATENT OFFICE I AUXILIARY- CALIiING DIAL o, j Application filed October 11,1932. Serial No. 637,251. I
The invention relates to calling devices as utilized in automatic telephone instrufmenfts and embodying a fixed number plate over which is adapted to be oscillated a ro- 5 tatable calling dial or finger wheel provided with a series of circumferentially disposed digital perforations in which isinserted selectively the finger of an operator for turning the dial when making a call until said finger contacts with a rigidlysecured finger-stop projecting inwardly over the dial. The present invention has for an object the provision of'an auxiliary calling dial 1 or templateiiadapted'to be temporarily located over the usual dial whenmaking a call and provided with such perforations only as are required to make a particular predetermined call, thereby avoiding'con'fusion and errors as well as the necessity of first ascertaining the particular call'numfiber. No memorizing of a number is required with the use of the novel auxiliary dial for in operating the calling device with the sameit is necessary merely to follow a particular sequence noted thereon.
A further object of the invention resides in theprovision of a member of the aforesaid nature Which may be readily applied to and removed from the usual calling dial of V the telephone instrument; and when not in use may conveniently stored or filed for further use. i
' Still another object of the inventionre sides in the provision'of a simple and inexand which, if desired, may serveg alsoas an advertising medium, andbe readily shipped finger stop associated with the calling device as well as to serve as a locating means for properly-f connecting, temporarily the disk with the said calling dial. This may A550 be effected; by'depressingsepa p n ing, in which:
cal section of the same andon an enlarged pensive member of the aforesaid nature, a
a same is provided Withaninwardly directed" slots to allow: of fitting the disk over the of the disk'or by providingdownwardly ex 7 tending flanges therefrom designed to fit into the terminal digital perforations of the dial so that if the auxiliary dial be rotated, the calling dial will follow therewith. There is furthermore provided in the said disk a plurality of digital: perforations representing, however, only the particular per? forations required for calling a predetermined'telephone number,'and these arecircumferentially disposed inthe disk in'such a manner as to register with the corresponding'digital perforations, of the calling. diskproper, Itwill therefore not be necessary injmaking acall'for the calling party to seek out from the calling dial various letters and numbers, but merely to operate said disk through insertion ofa finger successively in the perforations provided in the'disk and in the Sequence indicated adjacently to said openings. a
The nature of the invention, however, will best be understood when described in connection with the accompanying draw- 1 Fig; 1 isfa plan view illustrating the novel disk applied to the usual dialing member of an automatic telephone instrument.
Fig. 2 is a part front elevationand vertiscale, the section being taken on the line 22, Fig'l of the drawing.
Fig. 3 is aplan view offth'e novel au xiliary calling dial. Y
Fig. {1 isa vertical section through the calling" dial, and illustrates a modification in the locating and connecting means for the 'twoidials, is v Fig. 5-is aplan view of theauxiliary calling. dial, and illustratesafurther modifica- 390 bearing, element 11 over which is mounted for oscillation about the axis'of said element the finger wheel [or dial 12.1 This dial is provided .with' a central raised" portion or card-holder ,13 and a series of circumferentially'disposed perforations 14 which 'register with and through which are visible correspondingly disposed characters of the character-bearing element, as is well understood. In the usual operation of such sending apparatus, it is necessary first to ascertain the particular letter and number combination of the station to be called and to then correspondingly select the perforations of the calling dial, rotating the dial through each perforation select-ed until contact is had with a finger-stop member 15 which projects inwardly over the surface of the dial.
In accordance with the present invention, an auxiliary dial is prepared with only such perforations as are required for the particular number desired; and, as indicated in the drawing, the auxiliary dial 20 is in the nature of a circular disk of light metal, such as aluminum, and of substantially the same diameter as the calling disk 12 so as to clear the vertically projecting shank of the fingerstop 15.
A'disk 20 may also be provided with a central cupped or cap portion 21 designed to fit over the card-holder 13 which then affords a guide therefor. Furthermore, a slot 22 is directed inwardly from the circumference of the disk to accommodate said finger 15 and permit the disk to be passed thereover to rest upon the surface of calling dial 12 and move freely under said stop in calling. In order to secure the proper registry of disk 20 with reference to calling dial 12 depressed portions 23 and 24 are provided upon opposite sides of slot 22 to fit the correspondingly positioned terminal perforations of the series of circumferentially disposed perforations 14.
In many instances, these particular end portions will not enter into the calling operations and the bottoms of said depressions need not, therefore, be stamped out. However, in the event that such perforation or perforations should be required in making up of the calling combination of perforations, a flange 25 may be turned down from the disk, as indicated in Fig. 1 of the draw ing, leaving a through perforation 26 thereat.
In making up the required combination of calling perforations, the same will be positioned variously circumferentially over the disk 20, for example, as indicated at 26. 27, 28 and 29, at which points these perforations are provided to register with the corresponding perforations of the calling disk 12 required for sending the particular number in question. Provision is made on the disk 20. also, for indicating to the calling party the particular sequence in which the perforations 26, 27, 28 and 29 are to be used, for example, by means of the numbers 1. 2, 3. etc. printed or otherwise applied to the upper surface of the disk, as indicated.
When, therefore, an auxiliary disk has been located over the calling disk, it will be necessary merely to operate the same through the perforations thereof and the registering perforations of the calling disk in the particular succession indicated, the calling disk following the auxiliary disk and transmitting the proper impulses. After the call has been made, the auxiliary disk may be readily lifted off and stored or filed away for future use.
In case the auxiliary dials are made up for general sale, a continuous succession of perforations, comprising all of the possible combinations, may be provided in the disk circumferentially thereof and all covered over with some readily puncturable mate rial, as heavy paper. For example, reference being had to Fig. 5, the disk 30 has all of the required perforations 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39 and 40 for effecting any desired combinations; and the same are all originally covered by a sheet of paper 41 which may be pasted over the top of said disk. The particular combination desired is then made therefrom by puncturing through at the necessary perforations, for example, at the perforations 32, 33, 34 and 36, the remaining ones continuing covered.
I claim:
1. An auxiliary calling device for the calling apparatus of automatic telephones, comprising a circular disk bearing indicia and provided with means for engaging a perforation of the apparatus dialing wheel and with an inwardly directed slot to pass the finger stop of the apparatus whereby said disk when applied to the dialing wheel may rotate therewith, and said disk having a plurality of perforations less than the total number of perforations of the dialing wheel, adapted for registry with predetermined perforations thereof and associated with the indicia of the disk.
