This invention relates to improvements in cinematographic projection apparatus and particularly in the film drums of such machines protecting the film against ignition,
| and it is the principal object of the inventlon to provide in such film drums guides for films of standard width as well as of films having a width greater than standard or normal width with means to prevent accidental insertion by the operator of a film of standard width into the film films. 7
Another object of the invention is the provision of a novel and improved locking device for the doors of film magazines for the insertion of films of a larger than standard width for preventin insertion of films of standard :size into the film guide for the larger slzed films, while a locking of the doors for the 20 dently not necessary because it will be impossible to introduce a film of wider size into the guide for the film of standard size without that the operator became immedlately aware of his mistake.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a locking means for the doors of film guides of comparatively simple and inexpensive constructlon, yet durable and highly efiicient in operation. 7

Fig. 1 shows an apparatus constructed according to my invention in elevation.

As illustrated, the film guide is composed of a body.1 supporting on one of its sides slide guide rails 2 for films of standard width and on its opposite .side slide guide rails 3 for films of greater than standard width.

bearings formed with the support, and the roller is equipped with stepped parts 5 and 6 for supporting films of standard and wider width res ectively. Doors and 8 are arranged on opposite 65 sides of the body 1, which carry at their ends rollers 9 and 10 tending to press the film bands against the steps of the roller, and the inner width of these doors is suited to the gispective width ofthe standard and wider The door 8 for the introduction of the films of wider than standard width is hinged to the body 1 by means of the hinges. 11 and 12 provided with elongated slots 13,14 into which engage pins 15, 16, on the spindle 17 about which door 8 is turnin This spindle 17 carries at its lower end a plate 18 having a pin 19 adapted to engage an opening 20 in'body 1 in alignment with said pin.
If pin 19'is disengaged from the opening 20 as shown in Figure 1, door 8 may be opened, while it is held closed by the engagement of pin 19 in opening 20.
Within the film drum, protecting the film against fire or ignition, a double armed lever 21 is arranged, one arm 22 ofwhich is pressed against the end walls of the fihn spools 23, 24, while the other arm 25 of lever 21 engages a slanting or wedge shaped element 26 upon the spindle 17 of door 8.
The device operates as follows:
If for instance the film drum contains a arm 22 will engage the end wall 23 of said" spool by the intermediary of its spring, and arm 25 consequently will receive a corresponding movement along the wedge-shaped or inclined element tending to depress spindle 17 and to disengage pin 19 from opening 20. It will,- therefore, be possible to open the door 8, allowing the introduction of the wide film band. If now the spool carrying the I wider film is removed, arm 22 will engage the end wall 24 of the spool for the standard size film and arm 25 will be disengaged from the inclined face 26 and allow spring 27 to press the spindle 17 inwardly to engage pin 19 with opening 20 in order to lock door 8.
4 move the pin out of the opening in the body It will be apparent that it is not necessary to provide such a locking device for door 7 allowing the introduction of a film of standard size, as a film of wider size could not possibl be inserted on a standard size spool wit out that the operator at once becomes aware of his mistake. It will be understood that the preferred form of the apparatus only has been described and shown, and that such changes may be made in its general arrangement and in the, construction of its minor details as come within the scope of the appended claims without departure from the spirit of the invention and the principles on which the same is based.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a cinematographic apparatus of the class described, including the fire preventing film drums and film spools, a support having bearings, a stepped spool journaled in said bearings, doors hingedly attached at opposite sides to said support, a tw o-armed lever in each drum engaging with oneof its arms the spools, means for holding said arm in its spool engaging position, a wedge shaped element adapted to be engaged by the other of said arms, and locking means for one of said doors adapted to be operated by said wedge shaped element.
2. In a cinematographic apparatus as described including its film feeding spools, a body having a wider film guiding channel at one side, a narrower film guiding channel on its opposite face and a vertical opening in its bottom, a door closing the channel in which the wider film is guided and a door for closing the channel in which the narrower film is guided, a spindle for the door closing the channel for the wider film and hinges for the last mentioned door provided with elongated slots, pins on said spindle engaging in said slots, 8. plate on the lower end of said spindle having a pin adapted to engage in the openin of said body, a spring carried by said bo y and enga 'ng said plate to ur the plate and spin e upwardly and seat t e pin in the opening of the body to lock the wide film door, a stepped film roller journaled in bearings at the upper end of saidbody, a wedge-shaped element on said spindle, and a two-armed lever adapted to have one of its arms engage one of the film spools and its other arm move across said wedge shaped element toforce the spindle downwardly and to release the wide door when a wide film spool is in use, and rollers carried by said doors for pressing the films against the steps of said stepped roller.
3. In a cinematographic apparatus having a fire preventing film drum and film spool, a support having bearings, a stepped roller supported by said bearings, doors hingedly attached at opposite sides of said support and one having a pivot spindle turning with the door and shiftable longitudinally, means carried by said spindle to secure the door closed, means yieldably resisting movement of the spindle and means to a door releasing positlon, and a lever in said drum having an arm for engaging a film spool and another arm adapted to engage said spindle and move the spindle to a door releasin position.
4. In an apparatus 0 the character described, a film spool drum, and means for guiding film comprising a body having film tracks of different widths upon opposed faces and a socket at its lower end, doors for closing said tracks one door being hingedly mounted by a spindle slidable vertically of the body, an end plate at the lower end of said spindle, a pin carried by said plate, a spring carried by said body and engaging said plate to urge the spindle upwardly and move the pin into said socket to secure the door closed, a wedge shaped element at the upper end of said spindle, and means in said drum adapted to be moved by engagement with a film spool carrying film of a width corresponding to the width of the track controlled by the door into position to engage said wedge shaped element and shift the spindle downwardly to move the pin out of said socket and release the door.
5. In an apparatus of the character described, a vertically disposed body havin opposed faces formed with film channels 0 unequal width doors for closing said channels, a spindle for hingedly mounting one door said spindle being slidably carried by said body and turning when the door is moved, a
spring urging said spindle upwardly, means carried by the spindle to engage said body and prevent turning of the spindle and secure the door closed when the spindle is moved upwardly, a cam at the upper end of said spindle, and an actuating lever for said spindle pivotally mounted and having one end engageable with a side of a film spool and its other end disposed for movement across the cam for shifting the spindle downwardly and releasing the spindle to permit opening of the door.

In an apparatus of the character described, a vertically disposed body having opposed faces formed with film channels of unequal width doors for closing said chanscribed, a vertically disposed body having opposed faces formed with film channels of unequal width, doors for closing said channels, a spindle for hingedly mounting one door, said spindle bein sli'dably carried b said body and turningwien the door is move a spring urging .said spindle upwardly, means carried by the spindle to enga e said body and prevent turning ofthe spin 1e and secure the door closed when the spindle is moved upwardly, and a cam at the upper end 7 of the spindle to facilitate depression of the spindle to release the door.
