2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed April 50, 1930 Patented Apr. 25, 1933 UNITED STATES ALFRED U.- DAVIS, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR TO DAVIS INSTRUMENT PATENT OFFICE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, INCORPORATED, A CORPORATION OF MARYLAND ANEMOMETER Application filed April 30,
This invention relates to improvements in anemometers, and has for its object to provide a simple and efficient device for recording the velocity of the wind.
The invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of the parts and combination of parts hereinafter more fully set forth in the following specification and pointed out in detail in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention.
Figure 2 is a top plane view of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal section, on an enlarged scale, of the upper casing continuing the operative parts.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of a modification of the vane case and vanes.
Referring to the'accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which like reference numerals designate like parts throughout the several views thereof, 1 designates a metal ring, or vane case, having spokes 2 connected to the plate 3 in which the hub 4 is mounted. The vanes 5 are se-. cured to the hub 4 and revolve therewith. The hub 4 is provided with a worm \(not shown) in mesh with a worm gear (not shown) on the end of the drive shaft 6. The said drive shaft 6 projects through the vane case 1 and through the super-base 7 Which latter is secured to the vane case 1 by means of the screws 8. The drive shaft 6 has a bearing 9 in the base 7 and on the upper end of the drive shaft 6 is a hub 10 to which is secured the drive box 11. Surrounding the drive box 11 is a driven box 12, mounted on a spindle 13, which latter revolves in the bearings 14 in the hub 10 and the bearing 15 in the frame 16 which is secured to the casing 17 by means of screws 18. The hub 1930. Serial No. 448,617.
and carries a stabilizer fan 24. The base 7 is provided with a magnet 25 and a clamping ring 26 which latter holds the casing 17 in position on the base 7 by means of screws (not shown) passing through the ring 26 into the base 7 and the flange of the base 7 overlapping the flange on the casing 17. The drive box 11 and driven box 12 are made of non-magnetic metal and are not affected by the magnet 25, but the flux passing across the space between magnet 25 and the ring 26 tends to retard the movement of the driven box 12. The front of the driven box 12 is provided with a dial 36 and the front of the casing 17 is provided with a glass covering 27 through which the figures on the dial 26 can be read. The driven box 12 is held in its normal position by the coiled spring 28 which has one end secured to the lug 29 on the frame 16 and its opposite end secured to the hub 19. A ring 37 as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 4 of the drawings or a knob 38 as shown in Figure 3 of the drawings, may be employed for the purpose of lifting or carrying the anemometer. I
The revolving of the shaft 6 by the wind against the vanes 5 causes the driven box 11 to revolve and the air between the drive box 11 and the driven box 12 drags the latter and indicates the velocity of the wind by the reading on the dial 26.
In Figure 4 of the drawings, I haveshown indicates the velocity of the wind by the drive shaft 31 is mounted and a number of cup shape vanes 23 carried by said shaft.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is An anemometer comprising a vane case having an aperture in the upper end thereof,
a number of vanesrevolubly mounted in said vane case, a casing mounted on said vane case and having an opening in one side thereof, a drive shaft driven by said vane and projecting through said aperture and into said casing and having a hub on one end thereof, 9 A
a drive box Within said casing and mounted on the hub of said drive shaft and revoluble therewith, a driven shaft revolubly mounted in said casing, a driven boX rigidly mounted on said driven shaft and surrounding said drive box and having a dial thereon visible through the opening in said casing, a stabilizer fan mounted in said casing, a shaft upon which said stabilizer fan is mounted, a pinion on said stabilizer fan shaft, and a gear Wheel on the driven shaft and in mesh with said pinion.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ALFRED U. DAVIS.
