This invention relates to improvements in milling machinery and has particular reference to a novel and improved mechanism for controlling the work and cutter movements of member.
Another object of the invention 1s the provision of an improved mechanism for controlling'the feeding movement of the work piece at varying rates and for producing a 'quick yreturn thereof at the completion of the cutting operation. u
Additional objects include a general simplification of machine structure and controls and improvement in structural ldetails as hereinafter more specifically pointed out, but it will be understood that I may makeany modifications in the particularstructure shown and described within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from or 'exceeding the spirit of the invention.

Figure 9' is a perspective view of the trip pllnger control member and associate parts, an
Figures 10, 11- and12 are fragmentaryV views illustratingv the releasable connection between the main clutch control and the trip plunger mechanism.
Figure 13 is a fragmentary sectional view lower bracket portions 33 slidably supporting the quills 34 for the spindles 35. The spindles 35 have the customary spindle noses 36 to receive the usual cutter arbors. Intermediate the overarm and quill supporting portions the carriers are split as indicated at v37. T bolts 38 engaged in the ways 28 and provided with .nuts 39 may be tightened to simultaneously lock the carriers in vertically adjusted position upon the columns and also to contract the carriers at the slots 37 to se- A curely lock the overarms and quills in. adjusted position therein.
The spindles are driven through a suitable series of gears 40 having on their lower ends the bevel gears 42 in mesh with the pinions 43, loosely mounted on the main drive shaft 44. Individual clutches 45 keyed on drive shaft 44 may be moved to interlock with either of the pinions 43 for operatively connecting sha-ft 41 with shaft 44, it being understood that the shifting of clutch 45 to the left or right from the neutral position shown in Figure 1 will cause the spindle 35 to be driven in opposite directions ait the rate determined by gearing 40, which if desired mayinclude ch lnge gears at the upper end of shaft 41to vary said rate. Shifters 46 serve to vary the position of the clutches 45 for individual control of the right and left hand shafts 41`of Figure'l. l
Formed on the bed 25 intermediate the columns 26 and 27 'are the ways 47 for the machine table 48 which thus has a forward and back or in and out movement with respect to the spindles 35. The movement in an inward or feeding direction is imparted to the table through the medium of rack 49 on the underside of the table and pinion 50 on the upper end of shaft 51, while movement in the reverse direction is effected through the cha-in 52 riding over idlers 53 and 54 and bearing on its end the weight 55. When the pinion 50 is released from its driving connections the weight 55 will return the table rapidly to its forward position. 'To limit the further movement 4and eliminate jar of the table or other parts of the machine, use is made of cylinder 56 at the frontl of the table within which moves piston 57 actuated toward the left'by spring 58 and having an abutment 59 for engagement with the' abutment block 60 on the underside of the table as is most clearly illustrated in Figure 4. An air vent 61 is provided for the cylinder to create an air cushion' in the cylinder supplementing action of spring 58, the effective size of aperture of this vent being varied by adjustment of valve screw 62 at the front of the bed.
To securev maximum efficiency in milling or like operations, it is desirable that the table be `first advanced at a rapid rate until the work to be operated upon is substantially in engagement with the cutter and that it be subsequently given a slow and powerful" inward or feeding movement during \the time the cut is being made. To attain thisresult in the present instance, shaft 51 has on its lower end worm gear 63 driven by worm 64 on shaft 65. Keyed to this shaft is a clutch member 66 for cooperation with the clutch face 67 on the hub of gear 68 driven from pinion 69 on shaft 70, means being provided for driving shaft 70 at either a rapid or relatively slow rate of rotation as preferred.
The power for operating shaft 7 0 is derived from main shaft 44 of the machine through the gear 71 on said shaft, meshing with a combined spur and miter gear having spur portion 72 and miter or bevel portion 73. This gear is mounted concentric with shaft 70 on sleeve 74 rotatable on bushing 75 disposed intermediate the shaft and gear. This sleeve has a clutch face 6 for cooperation with one side of shiftable clutch spool 77 keyed on shaft 70. The rapid movement of the tablel is therefore effected from the main drive shaft through gears 71 and 72, sleeve 74 and spool 77 to shaft 70.
To impart the slow feeding movement to the table use is made of the gear 73 which is in constant mesh with bevel gear 78 on stub shaft 79, bearing pinion 80, driving gear 81 on shaft 82. The parts and 81 may be change ears for varying the rate of feed drive. arried by shaft 82 is a pinion 83 driving gear 84 on shaft'85. This shaft is in turn provided with a worm 86 meshing with the worm gear 87 mounted von sleeve 88 concentric with shaft 70,. This sleeve has a clutch face 89 for engagement with the second clutch face of the clutch spool 77 for coupling the sleeve with shaft 70 for actuation of the latter therefrom. It will thus be seen that by shifting of the clutch spool to the left as viewed in Figure 6, shaft 70 will be coupled as previously described for operation ata rapid rate of speed, while by shifting of the spool to the right the shaft will be coupled through the worm, worm gear and other reduction gearing just described and through gears 7 3-78*72 with the drive pinion 71 on main drive shaft 44 for operation at a slow rate of speed.
To control the shifting of clutch spool 77 use is'made of shifter yoke 90 interlocking with the spool and intermediately pivoted to the casing 91. This shifter yoke has at its opposite end the rack segment 92 meshing with the annular teeth 93 on shifter rod 94 which has a second series of annular teeth 95 engaged by the spline teeth 96 on trip plunger 97 which extends upwardly at the side of ways 47 and has the triphead 98 provided with portions 99 for engagement with the dogs 100 and 101 adjustably mounted on the side of table 48.
In operation the parts are set for rapid inward movement of the table and the table moves in until dog 100 engages the plunger head abutment 99 rocking the plunger to shift the clutch spool out` of engagement with clutch face 76 and into engagement with clutch face 89 when the table will be,con tinued inward at a feeding rate untilV the work is completed. At this point dog 101 will engage head 98 of the trip plunger and vertically shift the plunger. This vertical shifting movement serves through the annular teeth 102 on the plunger meshingwith pinion portion 103 of shifter rod 104 to rock the shifter rod. This rod is provided with the eccentric pin 105 riding in the shifter groove 106 of gear 68 and the vertical movement of the trip plunger serves to separate clutch faces 66 and 67 thus disconnecting the drive from shaft 65'when the weight 55 acts to return the table to its forward position. lIt
rocking may be effected by interengagement of dog 100 in the head of the cam on the reverse stroke shifting the parts to original fast speed position.
Similarly the rocking of shifter rod 104 is accentuated by mounting upon the rod the cam plate 109 engaged by the spring pressed actuator d'etent 110, causing a like rapid movement of this part when urged by the trip dog beyond neutral position.
It will be understood that it is quite desirable that the machine may be manually started or stopped at any desired point in its operation as well as mechanically actuated. Also, I have found it desirable to either manually or automatically stop the entire drive of the machine, that is to say, both the inward power movement of the table and also the driving of the cutters automatically and simultaneously in some instances, while in other instances I find it preferable to continue the actuation of the cutters while the table is making its return stroke. To provide for these several manual and automatic controls, use is made of the following mechanisms z Power is primarily applied to the main shaft 44 of the machine as through a drive belt 111 from a suitable source of power actuating pulley 112 which may be coupled with shaft 44 by clutch 113. This clutch is operated by the clutch control arm 114 and the clutch shifting rod 115, having the operating handle 116. Upward swinging of handle 116 rocks rod 115 to move the clutch into operative engagement, whereby shaft 44 is driven and thus the vertical driveshafts 41 for the spindles. The rod 115 is formed with a tongue 117 engageable in groove118 of the motion transmitting spindle 119 which ti spindle has a second groove 120 engaging the tongue 121 of spindle 122, having the handle 123. S indle 122 also has a pinion portion 124 mesliing with the annular rack 125 of the trip plunger rod 97. As a result with the several -parts in the interengaged relation shown in Figure 9 rocking movement of rod 115 will be transmitted throughspindles 119 and 122 to plunger 97, so that when the main clutch of the machine is thrown in and out, the table control clutch will be correspond- -in ly shifted. Also, when the dogs automatil actuate the trip plunger the entire drive of tlie machine will be automatically stopped.
To take care of those instances when it is desired to stop merely the drive of the table without stopping the cutter movement or where it is desired to shutoff the power of the machine without releasing the table clutch so that the table will remain in the position to which it has been fed or advanced, the rod 115 and spindle 12:2 are disconnected one from the other. This disconnection is facilitated by forming spindle 119 with a knurled operating portion 126 and with a Hat 127 adjacent groove 117. The effect of this will be best understood by reference' to Figures 10, 11 and 12, from which it will be seen that on rotation of member 119 the flat 127 will come into the path of movement of tongue 117 on rod 115 with the result that this rod may be rocked back and forth without aecting the trip plunger or parts controlled thereby and similarly the member 119 may be reciprocated without engaging tongue 117 Also, on account of the projection of the tongue into the flat 127, the parts can only be reengaged for joint actuation when both have been independently shifted either into driving or neutral positions.
From the foregoing connection with the accompanying drawings the construction and control of the present improved milling machine should be readily understood and it will be noted that there has been provided a simplified structure in which the table may be shifted in the direction of the cutters at a quick traverse or at a feeding rate and the change from one rate to the other automatically eifected as by dogs on the table, and that at completion of the feed stroke the power drive may be automatically disconnected and a rapidindependent return movement given the table as throughl a weight mechanism and a yielding bulfer for taking up the shock of the table return.
It will further be noted that the machine may be used as a complete automatic single cycle operation in which the cycle may be manually started and at its completion the entire drive both of the cutters and of the table automatically checked or the 4cutter and table drive controls disassociated and ren. dered capable of independent manual actuaon. v
It will further be noted that a specifically novel drive mechanism has been provlded for attaining the various'desired rates of movement of the table.
