My invention yrelates to new and useful improvements in surgical claw scissors, and has for one of its objects to so fashion the blades as to provide hook or claw-like cutting edges which will prevent the scissors slipping ofiI the object being cut or said object slipping out from between the blades as often occurs where straight blade scissors are used. Y
Another object of the invention is to so construct the blades that all sharp points are eliminated and so that the cutting edges are back of the forward or outer ends of the blades whereby the forward or outer end of a guard for the cutting edges when the scissors are inserted to carry out an operation.
A further object ofthe invention is to provide a pair of surgical scissors, both 29 blades of which are identical in construction but in reversed relation, said blades having relatively short cutting edges with curved portions terminating short of the outer ends of the blades and sincek the cutting edges ter- Y minate short of the outer ends of said blades,
the latter act as guards and the curved portions prevent slipping of the work or scissors relative to each other during the cutting operation.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a pair of scissors for use in surgery and particularly veterinary surgery in which both blades are cross-shaped and the termini are rounded to prevent injuryv to organs of With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the 4a claims. s,
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the saine, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, :in which;- Y
Fig. 1, is a face view of'a pair of scissors constructed inaccordance with the invenvtion and shown in a closed position.
' tiguous Y organs.
" surrounded object will be cut,
Fig. 2is asimilar view in an'o'pen posi"-` v tOIL Y f, f. A 'Iii carrying out the invention ias hereinembodied, l 5 and 6 represent theblades of a pair of'scissors vpivoted at any suitable place 55 inte'rm'ediateftheir ends as indicated at 7 andprovided with a handle 8 and'9off'any Y desirable shape,A constructionl orconligur'a-v tion. Each blade has a falcated notch or -re cess l0 formed inwhat I call'the inner edgev 60 and the edge-around said falcated recess is sharpened'or `beveled to provide a cutting edge having a substantially'straight portion' extending obliquely from the inner side'edge of the blade to a point' within the bodylof 65 the bladefadjacent its outer end,`a 'curved portion andv another short substantially* straight portion leading back tothe inner side edge'of the blade.y f f i' The falcated recess in the edgeof a blade producesa claw or hookll', the terminal-of which is rounded as' indicated at`12 so -as'to'- eliminateany sharp pointwhich might injurelorgans-surrounding the one on which an :operation isl being performed or even "15' which might prematurelyv puncture the organ toflbe operated.
What might be said ytobe the primary advantage `in constructing a pairvof scissors' in the manner aboveldesoribed is that said scis- B0 sorsy 'will' cut just 4that part whichlyouwant to cut without cutting orv injuring anything else or disturbing any. othertissue or con-v The cutting blad-e being short ,and small, when it is desired to cut a'85" tendon or ligament, the cutting edges of the Y scissors are simplyv placed karound theobject and the scissors closed in the ordinary manner and since .thel claws or hooks first close about the object, th l tter' cannot slip out or be- 90 come disengaged from the blades and only the A pair of scissors of this kind can :used n for. cutting many different kinds `of tissues' and partsoi'a'body',l such as muscle, tendon, V90

offthe scissors which in`many cases cannot' be"y accomplished with ordinary surgical scissors.

L'. operation, there is no As an example of the usefulness and advantages of a pair of scissors of this kind, it will be assumed that a hanging Vtumor is to be removed from the abdomen. As soon as the tumor is located, it is tied off, usually With cat gut, and the scissors can be inserted in a closed condition until the. ends of the blades impiinge upon the tumor. The scissors are then opened and the ends of the blades passed around the tied part of the i Since the cutting edges. are*y lcc'ated Y tumor.
back of the ends of the blades and within the body thereof, the ends of said blades actl as guards during the insertion of the scissors and also during the time they are passed about the tumor.
As soon as the claw ends of the blades are around the tumor, the scissors are operated to cut offthe tumor and during the cutting chance of cutting or otherwise. damaging bowels or organs nearby and sin-ce the tumor cannot become dislodged from Vthe cutting edges due to thezclaw ends the single cutting operation will complete the wonk expeditiously.
with the use' of scissors constructed as above described, thev operation is so quick that itis over by they time the animal isf aware that the nail has been touche Ofcoursel do not as these mayy be varied with. the limits of the appended claims without departing from they spirit of myV invention.
