This inventionrelates to machines for op erating upon heels of shoes'and is exemplified with reference to a machine designed to form heel cover receiving slots in heels.
' In United States Letters Patent No.
7 1,761,021 there is disclosed a heel having a Y-shaped slot constructed and arranged .to receive both of the forward marginal portions of the side cover of a Louis heel and an end portion of a short heel breast covering flap. The straight and curved portions of the slot may be formed in separateoperations in a machine such as disclosed in application for United States Letters Patent Serial No. 337,696, filed February 5, 1929,in my name, of which the present application is a division.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a machine for effectively and quickly forming in the breast of'aheel a curved cover receiving slot such, for example,as the curved slot which constitutes a part of the compound slot disclosed in the above-mentioned atent. To this end and in accordance with a feature of the invention, the illustrated inachine comprises a'cutter and heel support ing means constructed and arrangedfor'relative movement to form in the breast of a heel a laterally curved heel cover receiving slot and is provided with mechanism for defining the path of relative movement of the cut terand the heel-supporting means. a As herein shown, a barrel saw constitutes the cutter for forming the laterally curved heel cover receiving slot and in order to support and 1 present the heel to the saw, the illustrated machine is'provided with a carrier or slide mounted for movement toward and away from the saw. The slide is constructed and arranged to support a trough-shaped heel holder whichrmay be adjusted'at a predeters mined angle to the saw to control the angle at which the slot isdisposed to the, breast of the heel, the heel holder also being adjustable in a plane inclined to the axis of rotation of the saw to form the curved slot at the desired location in the breast'of the heel. The illustrated trough-shaped heel holder is so constructed that when the heel is placed therein, it will centralizeitself with respect to the holder so that the median line of the breast of the heel, which projects beyond the I I holder, will lie in a vertical plane including the axis of rotation of the saw, the heel being clamped in position in the holder by engaging the toplift receiving and the attaching faces of the heel. The strai ht portion 12 of the slot may be I formed in a machine such as disclosed in the above-mentioned application for United States Letters Patent Serial No. 337,696 and extends heightwise of the breast of the heel along its median portion. In order readily to determine where to terminate the upper part'of the straight portion 12 of'a slot, that portion is usually formed after forming the curved portion 10 of the slot which, as illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5, extends from one up per breast corner of the heel to the other.
In order to form in the breast of the heel the curved slot 10 which is curved laterally of itself, the machine is provided with a barrel cutter or saw 14 past which the heel is moved in a predetermined path. The saw 14 is mounted for rotation upon a shaft 16 supported in a bearing 18 of a support 20 and is driven by a pulley 22 secured to the shaft. The support 20 may be adjustably securedto a base plate 24 by bolts 26.
In order to position the heel and to guide it in a predetermined path past the saw 14, the machine is provided with a carriage or slide having at its under side a T-shaped recess 32 shaped to lit a correspondingly shaped projection 34 of a guide 36 adjustably secured to the base plate 24 by screws 38 in order that the central line of the guide 36 may be conveniently alined in a vertical plane which includes the axis of rotation of the saw 14. The slide 80 at its rear end includes a pair of upright bifurcated standards 40 each of which is constructed and arranged to receive a rod 42 secured to a trough-shaped heel holder 44 and having at one end an enlarged head 46 and at the other end a clamp nut- 48 which is in threaded relation with the rod 42. The trough-shaped holder 44 fits between the standards 40 and is shaped to engage the outside face of the heel,
'which face comprises the side and the rear surfaces of the heel as distinguished from the breast of the heel. When the central line of the slide 30 has been adjusted in a vertical plane including the axis of the cutter 14 the bottom ridge 50 of the trough shaped holder 44 will also lie in that plane. When the heel is placed in theholder44 with the breast of the heel upwards, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, because ofthe oval shape of the rim of the attaching face of the heel,- the breast of the heel may be centralized so that the median line of the breast of the heel also lies in the above-mentioned vertical plane.
The heel is positioned lengthwise of the holder 44 by an abutment 42 which engages the top lift receiving face of the heel and against which the heel may be clamped by a pronged fork 54 pivotally secured to an eccentrically mounted lever 56 carried upon a pin 58 which is supported between upstanding ears 60 of the heel holder 44.
After the heel has been clamped in position in the work holder 44, as above described, the work holder may be set at a predetermined angle relatively to the saw 14, according to the angle at which it is desired to have the slot 10 enter the breast of the heel, by swinging the work holder 44 to its correct position, upon first unloosening the clamp screw 48 and by then tightening up the'same.
While making the above angular adjustment the work holder 44 may be raised or lowered in the standards 40 in order that the heel will be in the proper position to cause the slot 10 to extend from one upper breast corner of the heel to the other when the heel has been moved past the saw.
In order rigidly to hold the work holder 44 against the pressure of the saw 14 when the heel, which is supported in position upon the slide 30, is moved past the saw, the slide 30' carries in threaded relation therewith a post 62 having a knurled head which, after the work holder has been angularly adjusted, may be brought into contact with the under side of the work holder 44.
WVhen the heel has been securely positioned in the work holder 44, the slide 30 is moved along the guide 36 to1move the heel-past the saw 14, the movement toward the saw being limited by contact of a screw 64 ustably secured to the slide 30 and utilized for limiting the depth of the slot 10 formed in the breast of the heel. Movement of the slide 30 away from the saw 14 is limited by a lug 66 screwed to the base plate 24 and against which the rear portion of the slide 30 engages when it returns to its retracted position.
In order to perform the slotting operation, the heel is positioned in the work holder 44, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 4, with the breast of the heel upwards and is clamped against the abutment 52 by operating the lever 56. Theclamp nut 48 is then unloosened and the work holder 44 is angularly adjusted in order that the slot 10 will enter the breast of the heel at substantially right angles to the breast of the heel. At the same time the heel holder 44' is raised or lowered in the standards 40, in'order that the heel may beso positioned that the curved portion 10 of the slot formed in the breast of the heel will extend from one breast corner to the other, this being imp'ortant since'the breast flap, which is tucked into the slot 10, should form a continuation of the rear shank portion of the sole from which the flap is split. After the heel has been adjusted and clamped in position in the heel holder'44, the slide 30 is moved toward the saw 14 until stopped by contact of the screw 64 with the support 20 thereby limiting the depth of the curved portion 10' of the slot formed in the breast of the heel.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1'. A- machine for operating upon heels havin g, in combination, a cutter and heel-supporting means constructed and arranged for relative movement to form in the breast of a heel a laterally curved heel cover receiving slot, andguide means constructed and arranged to definethe path of relative movement of the cutter'and the heel-supporting means.
2. A machine for operating upon heels having, incombination, a cutter and a support constructed and arranged to engage the curved outside face 'of a heel to locate the having, in combination, a cutter, a troughshaped support constructed and arranged to locate a heel with its breast in a position to be slotted, said cutter and said support being mounted for relative movement to form in the breast of the heel a laterally curved heel cover receiving slot.
4. A machine for operating upon heels having, in combination, a rotary cutter, trough-shaped support constructed and arranged to engage the curved outside face of a heel, a carrier upon which the support is mounted, and mechanism constructed and arranged to adjust the support relatively-to the carrier in a plane disposed substantially normal to the axis of rotation of the cutter and also constructed and arranged angularly to adjust the support relatively to the cutter, said cutter and said carrier being mounted for relative movement to form in the breast of the heel mounted upon the support a laterally curved heel cover receiving slot;
5. A machine for operating upon heels having, in combination, a cutter, a troughshaped support to engage the curved outside face of a heel mounted upon the support to centralize and to locate the breast of the heel in a position accessible to be operated upon, and mechanism to position and to clamp the heel heightwise in the support, said cutter and said holder being mounted for relative movement to form a laterally curved heel cover receiving slot in the breast of the heel.
6. A machine for operating upon the heels having, in combination, a cutter, a troughshaped support to engage the curved outside face of a heel to centralize the heel and to locate the breast thereof in a position accessible to be operated upon, and abutments to engage the top lift receiving and the attaching faces of the heel respectively, to position the heel heightwise thereof in the holder and to clamp the same in place, said cutter and said holder being mounted for relative movement to form a laterally curved heel cover receiving slot in the breast of the heel.
7. A machine for operating upon heels having, in combination, a barrel saw, a holder constructed and arranged to support a heel and shaped to permit free accessibility to the breast of the supported heel, mechanism constructed and arranged angularly to adjust the holder relatively to the saw and also to adjust the holder in a plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the saw, said saw 65, and said holder being mounted for movement relatively to each other'to form a curvedhecl cover receiving slot "in the breast of the heel.

slide mounted for movement relatively to each other, a holder mounted upon the slide and constructed and arranged to support a heel in. order to form a heel cover receiving slot in the breast of the heel as the slide and the cutter are moved relatively to each other, and means constructed and arranged angularly to adjust the holder relatively .to

A machine for operating upon heels having, in combination, a rotary barrel saw, a slide mounted for movement axially of the saw, a holder mounted upon the slide and constructed and arranged to support a heel in order to form a heel cover receiving slot in the heel as the heel is moved axially of the saw, means constructed and arranged to adjust the holder angularly with relation to the slide and also to adjust the holder along a rectilinear path relatively to the slide in order to locate the slot formed in the heel as the heel carried by the holder moves past the saw.

A machine for operating upon heels having, in combination, a barrel saw and a slide mounted for relative movement in apath extending axially of the saw, and a trough-shaped holder mounted upon the slide and constructed and arranged to support a heel and to centralize the same relatively to said path in order to form in the heel upon relative movement of the holder and the saw a heel cover receiving slot, said holder being constructed and arranged for angular and rectilinear adjustment relatively to the slide in order to vary the angle that the slot forms with the surface of the'heel and the position of the slot in the heel, respectively, upon said relative movement of the saw and the slide.

A machine for operating upon heels l having, in combination, a cutter and a support which are shaped to engage the curved outside face of a heel constructed and arranged for relative movement to form in the breast of the heel a laterally curved heel cover receiving slot guide means arranged to define the path of relative movement of the cutter and the support at a substantial angle to the breast of the heel positioned on the support, and means constructed and arranged to limit the extent of relative movement of the cutter and the support to control the depth of the slot formed in the heel.

A machine for operating upon heels having, in combination, a rotary cutter, a heel receiving support, a carrier upon which the support is mounted mechanism constructed and arranged to adjust the support relatively to the carrier in a plane disposed substantially normal to the axis of rotation of the'cutter and also constructed and arranged angularly to adjust the support rela-
