Description
April 11, '1933. R. YUTTS DUSTER AND HANDLE 3mm ZMv/I yzzifid.
Filed Oct. 29, 1931 Patented Apr. 11,1933 i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE RALPH YUTTS, OF MIAMI, FLORIDA DUSTER AND HANDLE Application filed October 29, 1931. Serial No. 571,928.
This invention relates to certain new and Figure 6 is a side elevational view of the useful improvements in dusters and handles crimped duster shown in Figure 2 and and more particularly to the type of duster bunched with the tubular handle shown in illustrated in the patent to Ralph Yutts, section.
5 Number 1,836,103, and divisional a plica- The material employed in the manufacture 55 tion filed Oct. 29, 1931, Serial umber of the duster may be of any appropriate 571,927. character, such as paper, fabric or the like The primary object of this invention is to and for purposes of clearness, the material id novel f f d t d h dl w1ll hereinafter be referred to 'as paper and wherein the duster embodies a handle shank the same may be plain, crepe, crinkled or in so portion and a flaring frustmoonioal dusting other fOIIIlS suitable fOI the special PIIIPOSGS portion a, tubular handle member onlSCIlbGd thereto. The tubular handle of the closing the handle shank portion of the dust- (11151591: y also be formed of y pp p er d f a l th t f ilit t i i f material such as fabrlc, paper or cardboard the duster for use and for confining the hand y e of a su1tabl'e thickness or comdle shank portion of the duster in pleated, 'p P to add Sufilcient r y for crimped or bunched formation. the manlpulittlml f the duster.
With the above and other objects in view AS shown In Flgul'e the duster is formed that will become apparent as the nature of 9 a Sheet eloflgated strip of P p the invention is better understood, the same mg Q longltudmal g thereof creased to consists in the novel form, combination and Provlde P that Extend transversely of arrangement f parts h i ft more f ll the sheet a suitable dlstance to form the handescribed, shown in the accompanying dle shank Portlon 0f the duster While the drawing and claimed other side edge of the sheet 1s slitted at acute In the drawing: I angles to the longitudlnal edge of the sheet Figure 1 isa p View of a strip of mate as at 11 to provldebr stles or wisps rial employed in the manufacture of the dust- The Sheet 9 stnp' llhlstmted P er illustrating one Side edge thereof as p1eat possesses a crimped or crlnkled characteristic ed and the other side edge slitted at acute 9101155 one slde edge thereof as l extend- 30 angles to Said edge to provide wisps with ing transversely of the strip a distance sui'fia portion of the sheet collapsed or moved into clent l p the handle shank, the closely pleated formation; Opposlte S.1de edge of i Sheet 9 P 15 Figure 2 is a plan view, similar to Figure 1 glllarly l as at 11 q provldebnstles wherein the sheet or strip material is of a l2 S1m1lar to the Shts and WISPS Shown crinkled character having one side edge ani o. i gularly cut as in Figure 1 and further showt fi pleated Slde edge of the ing a portion of the strip or blank crimped 8 up S In lgum the plea-ts 10 are moved into relatively close relationship as 40 g g g gfi a the handle Shank and 1nd1cated at 10' and this bunching of the Figure 318 a developed perspective View of pleated edge may be accomplished in a manner to produce a substantiall c lindrical the T011 handle Showmg the gummed Stnp at handle shank portion 14 as shohn in Figure 0119 slfie edge thereof-fol retammg the fiat 5, while the bunching of the crinkled side f lio lIlrlollfid fOFmaUOI}; edge 13 of the form of strip illustrated in 45 {g 4 1s persllectlve 719W of h hall Figure 2 results in the formation of a subdle 1n rolled ql and S0 .l'etamed y stantially cylindrical handle shank portion the gummed strip 15 as shown in Figures 2 and 6. During these Flgure 5 1s a, side elevat onalvlew of the operations, the diagonally cut wisp portions bunched duster pleated as m Figure 1 wish 12 and 12' are moved into outwardly flaring 50 the tubular handle shown In 0 10 1; n substantially frusto-conical duster formations 16 and 17 respectively as illustrated in Fi res 5 and 6. y
0 retain the bunched duster constructions in duster formation as shown in Figures 5 and 6, a tubular handle retainer is provided, the same being formed from a blank 18, such as is shown in Figure 3 having a gummed strip 19 attached to one side edge thereof and extending beyond said edge as at 20. The completed handle formation is illustrated in Fi re 4 as being of tubular form, the blank 18 eing rolled w1th opposite side edges thereof overlapped with the extension edge 20 of the gummed strip 19 being adhesively secured to the adjacent portion of the handle blank 18'. The handle may be attached to the handle shank of the duster during the formation of the latter as by rolling the blank 18 into handle formation 18' with the gummed strip edge 20 retaining the same in r such form, or said handle blank 18 may be preformed as illustrated at 18 in Figure 4 and thereafter applied to the handle shank portion of the duster. Also, if desired, the tubular handle 18 may be introduced into a socket portion of the handle or the handle 18' may be used alone.
While there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim 1. The combination with a duster having a flared duster portion and a cylindrical handle shank portion, of a tubular handle on the cylindrical handle shank portion including a rolled sheet carrying a projecting gummed strip at one side edge for retaining the handle in tubular formation on the cylindrical handle shank portion.
2. The combination with a duster having a flared duster portion and a cylindrical handle shank portion formed by the bunching of the material at one end of the duster, of means for retaining the bunched end of the duster in handle shank formation and providing a stiffened handle therefor including a sheet of material rolled into overlapping relation to provide a cylindrical casing around the bunched end of the duster and being of stifi'er material than the duster, said rolled sheet being adhesively retained in cylindrical casing formation providing a reinforced stifl'ened handle inclosing the handle shank portion of the duster.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
RALPH YUTTS.
