This invention pertains particularly to e. duplicating machine equipped with e typewriter and adapted to the purpose of filling in multiple accounting slips, sales slips, or the like, with which continuous strips of paper are provided, these strips being taken, prefershly, from a. single roll.
In such a machine, it is usual to lead the strips of paper from'e roll, or rolls, to'suitable strip guiding and supportin means and thence across the plsten, to supp y meens for engaging the advance end-portions of the strips, and to provide tensionin means which tend to retract the strips. 'l e urpose of the present invention is to provi e e safetyceteh mechanism preferably heck of the platen, which will operate automatically to engage the strips end prevent them irom being withdrawn from the guiding and supporting menus in case of accidental release of the advance end-portions of the strips.
The invention is well sdepted for use in connection with a. type of machine comprising s track upon which is mounted a. cerriege for movement longitudinally on the track for line-spacing purposes, said carriage hsving mounted thereon s. transversely movshle typewriter which is moved in the usual way to effect letter and word spacing. The invention is applicable, however, to other types of duplicating machines, registers, and the like.

The standard A, the bed comprising treclrs A, the typewriter carriage B, and the typewriter B, are of well lrnown construction, end need not he described in detail. The strip supporting and guiding means E, with the platen C, forms a bed over which the paper strips are drawn. When it is desired to thread the paper strips through the guides, the rod 22 is drawn forwardly, thus moving the ber 18 rearwerdly and causing the cross-rods l8 to retroct the strip-engaging fingers, so as to leave open e path through which the strips can be threaded. After the strips have been threeded through the machine, the rod 22 is shoved rearwerdly, thus moving the her 18 to the udvance position shown in Fig. 5, leaving the cetch-fingers free to automati cnlly engage the ranch-holes in case the strips are accidents ly released,
Any desired number of catch-gore may be employed. The use of means for retract ing the catch-fingers to facilitate the threading of the strips through the machine is desirable, but is not essential. By an loying a series of catch-fingers underneath the ath of the series of punch-holes at the side 0 the center of the machine, the chance of the strips eluding the catch-fingers is reduced to a minimum. Ordinarily, a single set of catchfingers will" sufice; but inasmuch as there is some inconvenience attached to rethreading the strips through the machine, it is preferred to employ a plurality of catch-fingers assofiialted with each longitudinal series of punch- The use of catch-fingers adapted to protrude through the punch-holes has proven satisfactory in practice. However, any other suitable form of safety-catch which is autoinetic in its action of arrestingthe retraction of the strips and which is automatically released by the strips when they are drawn forward may be employed. 7
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness oi understandin only, and no unnecessary limitations shoul be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be construed as broadly as perissible, in view of the prior art.
What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: I
1. in moons of the character set forth, a bed equipped'with strip supporting and guiding moons over which strips provided with punch-holes may be drawn, pins fixed to the rent end oi seid bed for holding the advance ends of the strips, a, strip-supply source, strip-tensioning means tending to retract the strips, a safety-catch mounted on said bed beneath the path of the strips and serving as e feeler and adopted to automatically engage a punch-hole in the strips in case oi accidental releese oi the strips, seid safety-catch being automatically released by the strips when they are drawn forwardly, means above the strip for limiting displacement of the safetycutch when it engages e punch-hole, end means normally accessible to the operator for loohngg said safety-catch in inoperative position.
2. In menus oi the character set forth, a bed equipped with strip supporting and guiding means over which strips maybe drawn, menus for holding the advance ends of the strips, :1 strip-supply source, strip-tensioning means tending to retract the strips, a plurality of feeder-fingers in longitudinal slinement mounted on said bed beneath the Jail of the strips and adopted to engage punc -holes and catch the strips in the event of accidental release of the strips, said color-fingers being automatically released by the strips when they ere drown forwardly; and manual means normally accessible to the operator for throwing said color-fingers to into and out of operative position to enable the strips to be of said strip supporting and guidingameanfi rs an o and catch-members pivoted on said adapted to engage punch-holes in the strips when the strips are drawn rearwardly and ill) , catch-mem adapted to be released when the strips are drawn forwardly.
4. In means of the character set forth, the combination with strip supporting and guiding means, of rods extending transversely of said strip supporting and guiding means, a pair of bars adj ustably mounted on said rods and extending longitudinally of the strip supporting and guidine means, and catchmembers pivoted on said bars and adapted to engage punch-holes in the strips when the strips are drawn rearwardly and adapted to be released when the strips are drawn forwardly.
5. In means of the character set forth, strip supporting and guiding means, means for holding the advance ends of strips, a stripsupply source, strip-tensioning means ten ing to retract the strips, ieeler-fingers each pivotally mounted beneath the path of the strips, said feeler fingers having weighted members normally holding the fingers in contact with the lower strip and serving automatically to cause the finger to enter at punchhole when the finger encounters the punchhole, and a transverse rod disposed above the ath of the strips and adapted to be engaged y the feeler fingers when the latter are in their strip-catchin positions.
6. In means of t e character set forth, the combination with strip supporting and guiding means, of a pair of bars extending longitudinally of the strip supporting and guiding means, means for securing said bars: in a plurality of adjusted positions transversely of the stri supportin and guiding means hers pivote on said bars an adapted to engage punch-holes in the strips when the strips are drawn rearwardly and adapted to be released when the strips are drawn forwardly, slidably mounted bars, rods carried by said slidably mounted bars and engageable with the catch-members to hold them in functionally inoperative posh tions, and means for reciprocating said slidably mounted bars.
7.
