The present invention relates to an electricity generating apparatus and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an apparatus of this character embodying a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts through the medium of which wind is utilized for actuating one or more generators.
Other objects of the invention are to provide an electricity generating apparatus of the aforementioned character which will be simple in construction, strong, efficientand reliable in use and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein Figure 1 is a view in top plan of an apparatus in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a view in vertical longitudinal section through the apparatus.
Figure 3 is a View in elevation looking at the intake end of the conduits.
Figure 4 is a view in vertical cross section through the conduits showing the means for supporting the same on the frame.
Figure 5 is a detail view in front elevation of one of the conduit supporting brackets.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates generally a frame comprising the longitudinal side bars 2 between the ends of which the front and intermediate cross bars 3 and 4, respectively, extend. The cross bar 3 extends beyond the side bars 2 and terminates in depending arms 5 upon which the front supporting wheels 6 are mounted for rotation.
The frame 1 further includes the longitudinal bars 7 which are inwardly offset with respect to the bars 2 and connected, at their forward ends, to the cross bar 4. A cross bar 8 extends between and beyond the bars 7 at the rear ends thereof, said bar 8 being Serial No. 586,004.
coextensive with the bar 3 and terminating, at its ends, in the depending arms 9 upon which the rear supporting Wheels 10 are mounted for rotation.
A transverse shaft 11 is journaled in bearings provided therefor on the lower sides of intermediate portions of the bars 7 of the frame 1, said shaft 11 projecting laterally beyond the bars 7 and being operatively connected, at its ends, to the generators 12 which are mounted on suitable supporting brackets 13 which extend from the bars 7. A wind wheel 14 is fixed on the shaft 11 between the bars 7.
The reference numeral 15 designates a series of wind conduits which are mounted substantially longitudinally beneath the frame 1. The conduits 15 taper from their front ends to their rear ends and have said rear ends positioned adjacent the wind wheel 14 in a manner to cause the rapid rotation of said wind wheel by air directed against the blades thereof by the conduits when the apparatus is moved forwardly or when suf ficient air is passed through the conduits. This is illustrated to advantage in Figure 2 of the drawings. At the forward or intake ends thereof the conduits 15 are provided with a common flared mouth 16 for directing the wind thereinto.
A hanger 17 depends from the bar at of the frame 1 and the rear ends of the conduits 15 are supported on said hanger 17 by a bracket 18 of a construction illustrated to advantage in Figures 1 and 5 of the drawings. The for- 35 wardends of the conduits 15 are supported on the cross bar 3 of the frame 1 by a bracket 19 which is similar to the ln'acket 18 with the exception that it is larger to accommodate the comparatively large forward end portions of the conduits.
In use, the apparatus may be connected to the front of a suitable vehicle, such as an automobile or railroad car to be driven for wardly thereby. Forward movement of the apparatus causes air to pass through the flared mouth 16 into the conduits 15 from which said air is discharged under considerable pressure through the comparatively small or restricted rear ends of the conduits 1,908,307 "r j :21 0K 5 h e inst-the blades of the wheel 14.
