Description
March 28, 1933- J. w. CATARAU ARTIFICIAL BAIT Filed 001;. 25. 1951 INVENTOR Patented Mar. 28, 1933 JULES W. CATARAU, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON ARTIFICIAL BAIT Application filed October 23, 1931.
This invention discloses the combination of any trolling spoon and of a scent container, and its main object is to augment the enticing power of any trolling spoon by endowing the same with the specific effluvium of the foodfish said spoon simulates visually.
A further object of the invention is to provide any trolling spoon with a scent container built on a convenient portion of the spoon without increasing the latters weight by adding incongruous parts in the construction of the combination.
In carrying out the above end a further aim is to devise said container so that it may be built on any trolling spoon by a single stroke of one and the same die.
On the drawing accompanying this application the Figure l is a perspective view of a trolling spoon comprising a scent container in accordance with this invention, and the Figure 2 exposes a cross section of broken line 22 of Figure 1.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawing.
As substantially illustrated by the drawing thereof, the body member 4 of a trolling spoon, which consists always of a distorted strip of metal provided with fish-hook 5 and leader 6 attaching means, is slit on a convenient portion so as to obtain a series of bars 7 extending relatively parallel to each other and naturally connected together at the ends. Simultaneously said bars 7 are diverged out of their natural frame in alternate order so as to obtain two oppositely spreading rows of bars with holding space between.
With equal success only every first or every other one of said bars may be forced out of its natural frame in any one direction until desired containing space is obtained between the row of dislodged bars and the row of bars remaining in their primordial position.
The bottom 9 of the container is formed by a gradual reducing of the length of the slits toward the rear end 8 of the spoon, or by a gradual lessening of the space between the two rows of bars 7 also toward the rear end 8 of the spoon, in order to have the bottom of the container behind when trolling so as to prevent the washing away of the scenting Serial No. 570,571.
material introduced into the container through the ingress 10, a portion purposely left unobstructed by the bars 7 and looking toward the forward end 11 of the spoon.
A series of interstices 12, caused thereto by the slitting and dislodging of the bars 7,
- become essentially necessary to permit water to circulate in and out of the container and thereby to contaminate its molecules with effluvium emanated by the scenting materia from within the container.
The advantage of a coverless container resides in reduction of parts to be constructed and in reduction of incongruity in the ensemble of the fish-lure upon which the container is built. A coverless container, being positioned as shown in this invention, receives the full stream of water which invades the unobstructed ingress 10 and escapes behind through the openings 12, thus increasing the exudation of the scenting materia from within the container.
It is obvious that according to the invention a container can be built on any trolling spoon by a single stroke of one and the same 7 ber, and having upper and lower walls each of which is curved outwardly from the longitudinal axis of the container and has slits, one of said slits being of greater width than the others to permit the scent material to be inserted. into the container.
2. A body member for an artificial bait, said body member including a container for scent material, said container being positioned intermediate the ends of body memher. and having upper and lower walls one of which is curved outwardly from the longitudinal axis of the container and has slits, one of said slits being of greater width than the others to permit the scent material to be inserted into the container.
3. A body member for an artificial bait, said body member including a container for scent material, said container being positioned intermediate the ends of body member, and having upper and lower walls each of which is curved outwardly from the longitudinal axis of the container and has a plurality of openings, one of said openings being larger than the others to permit the scent material to be inserted into the container; said larger opening being exposed toward the forward end of body member to prevent the washing away of scent material when trolling.
4. A body member for an artificial bait, said body member including a container for scent material, said container being positioned intermediate the ends of body member, and having upper and lower walls one of which is curved outwardly from the longitudinal axis of the container and has a plurality of openings, one of said openings being larger than the others to permit the scent material to be inserted into the container; said larger opening being exposed toward the forward end of body member to prevent the washing away of scent material when trollin JULES W.
