Description

WQKEMP, Jr. SASH-FASTENER;
No. 190,221, Patented May 1, 1877.
WITNESSES INVENTOB N. PEI'ERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D C,
UNITED STATES PATENT FFIGE.
WILLIAM KEMP, JR., on NEW YORK, N. Y,
IMPROVEMENT lN SASH-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 190,221, dated May 1, 1877; application filed March 24, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM KEMP, Jr., of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Sash- Fastener, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a vertical section of a portion of a window, with my improved fastener attached. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line a: a: in Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention consists in the combination of a sliding bolt, placed in a suitable guide that is attached to the upper meeting rail of the lower sash, and provided with a spindle and slotted arm for moving the bolt, and two slotted bars, one of which is attached to a stile of the upper sash, and the other to the roller stile or jamb of the window, as hereinafter more fully set forth and definitely claimed.
The object of the invention is to simultaneously lock both sashes by a single operation and by a single bolt.
Referring to the drawing, A is a bolt, having the right-angled projection B and pin a. G is an L-shaped support for the various parts,
' which extends over the meeting-rail and down upon the stile of the lower sash, and is provided with the guide I) for the bolt A, and
with chambered projection (3', in which the spindle 0, having the milled head D, is journaled. Upon the upper end of the spindle 0, within the chamber of the projection C, an arm, E, is fixed, which is slotted to receive the pin athat projects downward from the bolt A through a slot in the part 0. A spiral spring, 01, encircles the spindle c, and is attached to it', and also to the support G. F F are bars, having slotsffor receiving the ends of the bolt A, and having holes for receiving screws for securing them in their places. The bar F is attached to the rail of the upper window sash in position to be engaged by the bolt A, and the bar F is attached to the roller stile or jamb 0f the window in position to be engaged by the right-angled end B of the bolt A.
These bars may be of any required length, and their slots may be placed at any desirable distance apart.
By turning the milled head D the bolt is drawn from the slots of the bars FF, and either the upper or lower sash may be raised or lowered, and locked in any desired position; or both may be opened at any point within the range of the slotted bars, which are limited to such length as to prevent the entrance of persons, or the further opening of the window from without.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The right-angled bolt A, having the pin a, L-shaped support 0, spindle 0, having the slotted arm E, spring d, and slotted bars F F in combination, substantially as herein shown and described.
