This invention relates to new and useful improvements in holders forpie covers and has particular relation to a holder for a transparent pie cover.

An object of the invention is to provide a means whereby a cover, particularly a transparent cover, such as cellophane, may be easily and quickly applied to a pie supported on a plate.

Another object is to provide means adapted to be applied to a pie plate, in the form of a band about the plate, and secure a cover over the upper side of a pie on the plate.

A-further object is to provide a holder having the characteristics stated and which will not interfere with the lifting of the pie in the usual manner by the edges of the plate.

Yet another object is to provide a holder having the advantages describedand which holder may be made at low cost of cardboard or the like whereby it may be discarded after use. a

Another object is to provide a holder which may be used for securing a cover over pics of different diameters.

Other objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein satisfactory embodiments of the invention are shown. However, it will be understood that the invention is not limited to the details disclosed but includes all such modifications and variations as fall within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.

Referring in detail to the drawing, at 6 is shown a pie plate of any or the usual depth and having the usual outwardly extending horizontal flange 7 forming its upper edge. As here disclosed the plate 6 supports a pie 8. As a sanitary precaution and to keep pies fresh it is customary to dispose a cover over the upper surface of the pie and to secure the edges of said cover at the underside of the pie plate. These covers are usually transparent as of cellophane or the like whereby the covered pies are displayed and whereby the markings in the upper crust indicating the contents of the pie may be read. At the present time the covers are secured as by having their edges foldedand pasted. at the underside of the pie plate or as by paper strips run across the face of the pie.

The present invention provides means whereby a cover may be easily and quickly secured in position over a pieon a plate. This means or holder comprises a flexible strip 9 of relatively heavy paper or of manila lined cardboard or the like and at spaced points intermediate its ends. this strip is provided with longitudinally extending slots 10, the said slots being so spaced from one edge 18 of the strip that the slots will be positioned to receive portions of the flange 7 of the pie plate 6 when said edge of the strip is in engagement with a flat surface on which the plate rests;

12 and 13 and may or may not have also an inner pair of notches 14.- and 15. It will be noted that the notch 11 in one end portion ofthe strip opens through the lower edge of the strip while the notches in the other end portion of the strip opens through the upper edge portion thereof. The double pair of notches in one end portion of the strip adapt the strip for holding covers over pies on different diameters of plates, and where the strips or holders are to be made up for use only on one size of plates they may be made up as shown in Fig. 5

wherein the strip 9 is provided with a notch 11 in its lower edge adjacent one of its ends and with only one pair of notches, such as 12 and 13 in its upper edge adjacent its other en Assuming that a cover 20 of cellophane or the like is to be applied over the pie 8 on the plate 6, the said cover is disposed on the pie with the edges of the cover extending beyond the edge or flange 7 of the pie plate as shown in broken lines at 21 in Fig. 2. The ends of the strip 9 are then connected to form a band as shown in broken lines in Fig.2. Depending on the diameter of the pie plate the ends of the strip will be connected by engaging the notch 11 in either the notch 12 or the notch 14. If the plate is for example of 9 inches in diameter, notch 11 will be engaged in notch 14, and if the plate is say 10 inches in diameter, notch 11 will be engaged in notch 12. These dimensions are, of course, by way of example, the idea being to form a band slightly greater in diameter than the diameter of the edge or flange 7 of the plate on which the pie being covered is disposed.

The band formed and thus completed as above described is disposed on the'extending edge portions 21 of the cover 20 and is then pressed downwardly, which action will fold such edge portions 21 downwardly over the outer edge of the flange 7 of the pie plate. This disposes the edge portions of the cover between the band formed of the strip 9 and the edge of the pie plate and arranges the longitudinally extending slots 10 in alignment with the flange 7 of the pie plate. Next, the end portions of the strip are manipulated so as to raise the notch 11 out of either the notch 12 or the notch 14 as the case may be and these end portions are then drawn into further overlapping relationship and the notch 11 engaged in the notch 13 or the notch 15 as the case may be whereby to draw the strip into the form of a band of lesser diameter and secure it in such condition.

This drawing together of the ends of the strip results in the longitpdinally slotted portions of the strip moving over adjacent edge portions of the flange 7 of the pie plate whereby to fold the edge portions of the cover sharply about said portions of the pie plate and to have said portions extend through the slots as very clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 4. Further, the portions of the strip or holder intermediate the slots 10 draw the cover tight against the outer edge of the flange 7 of the pie plate and it will therefore be seen.

The strip 9 of Fig. 5 functions as does the strip 9 of Figs. 1 to 4, the only difference being that strip 9 of Fig. 5 is adapted for use only with a certain diameter of pie plate whereas the strip 9 of Figs. 1 and 4 may be used with plates of different diameters.

As above suggested, the holder or strip may be of a relatively heavy paper or manila lined cardboard or the like whereby after having once been used it may be discarded. To uncover the pie it is of course merely necessary to break the strip or to disconnect the overlapping ends of the holder and to swing said ends outwardly away from the pie plate after which the cover 20 may be easily removed. As the slots 10 are spaced from the lower edge of the holder a distance equal to the height of the pie plate said slots immediately align with the flange 7 of the plate on the lower edge of the holder being brought into engagement with the fiat surface on which the pie plate rests. Therefore, the holder may be easily applied. Since the holder is of relatively heavy material it will offer some protection to the edge portion of the pie and as the holder extends above the upper surface of the pie, pies may be stacked in staggered relation by engaging the lower edge of the holder of one pic with portions of the upper edges of the holders for the covers of two other pies.

Having thus set forth the nature of my invention, what I claim is:

1. A holder for a pie cover, the same comprising a flexible strip having spaced longitudinally extending slots therein, said strip adapted to be drawn about a pie plate to draw portions of a cover against the edge thereof and secure the cover over a pie thereon and dispose portions of the edge of the pie plate in said slots, and complemental means on the respective end portions of the strip whereby said end portions may be connected to secure the strip in place.

2. A holder for a pie cover, the same comprising a flexible strip having spaced longitudinally extending slots therein, means to detachably connect the ends of said strip to form a band having a diameter slightly greater than the diameter of the plate of a pie to be covered whereby said band may be pressed down about said plate and a cover over a pie thereon to fold the edge portions of the cover over the edge of the plate, and means for thereafter securing together the ends of said strip to form a band of smaller diameter whereby to draw the folded edge portions of the cover against the edge of the plate and dispose a portion of theedge of the plate in said longitudinal slots in the holder.

3. A holder for a pie cover, the same comprising a strip of relatively heavy paper having longitudinally extending slots therein, lneans for detachably connecting the ends of said strip to form a band having a diameter slightly greater than the diameter of the plate of a pie to be covered whereby said'band may be pressed down about said plate and a cover over a pie thereon to fold the edge portions of the cover over the edge of the plate, said strip adapted to thereafter have its end portions drawn into over-lapping relationship to form a band of slnaller diameter and draw the folded edge portions of the cover against the edge of the plate and dispose portions of the edge of the plate in said longitudinally extending slots, and means to secure the end portions of said strip together in said overlapping relationship.

4. A holder for a pie cover, the same comprising a flexible strip having spaced longitudinally extending slots therein, said strip having a notch in one of its edges adjacent one of its ends, said strip having a pair of spaced notches in its opposite edge adjacent its other end, said notch adjacent one end of the strip adapted to be engaged with one of the notches adjacent the opposite end thereof to form a band of a diameter slightly greater than the diameter of the plate of a pie to be covered whereby said band may be pressed down about said plate and a cover over a pie thereon to fold the edge portions of the cover over the edge of the plate, said strip adapted thereafter to have its end portions drawn into further over-lapping relationship to form a band of smaller diameter and draw the folded edge portions of the cover against theedge of the plate and dispose portions of the edge of the plate in said longitudinally extending slots, and said notch adjacent one end of the strip adapted to be thereafter engaged with the second notch of said pair of notches to secure the end portions of the strip together in said further over-lapping relationship.

5. A holder for a pie cover, the same comprising a flexible strip having spaced longitudinally extending slots therein, said slots spaced from one edge of said strip a distance equal to the height of the flange of the plate of a pie to be covered, said strip adapted to be disposed about a plate the cover over the pie of which has its edge portions disposed about the edge portion of the plate, said strip adapted to have its ends drawn toward one another to draw the edge portions of the cover against the edge of the flange of the plate and to dispose portions of said flange in the slots in the strip, and means for securing the end portions of the strip together with said edge portions of the flange of the pie plate disposed in said slots.

A holder for a pie cover, the same comprising a flexible strip having spaced longitudinally extending slots therein, said slots spaced from one edge of said strip a distance equal to the heightof the flange of the plate of a pie to be covered, said strip having a notch in one of its edges adjacent one of its ends, said strip having a plurality of spaced notches in its opposite edge adjacent its other end, said notch adjacent one end of the strip adapted to be engaged with one of the notches adjacent the opposite edge thereof to form a band of a diameter slightly greater than the diameter of the plate of the pie to be covered whereby said band may be pressed down about said plate and a cover over the pie thereon to fold the edge portions of the cover over the edge of the plate, said strip adapted thereafter to have its end portions drawn into further overlapping relationship to form a band of smaller diameter and draw the folded edge portions of the cover against the edge of the plate and dispose portions of the edge of the plate in said slots, and said notch adjacent one end of the strip adapted to be thereafter engaged with another of said plurality of notches to secure the end portions of the strip together in said further overlapping relationship.

7. A holder for a pie cover, the same comprising a flexible strip, means to detachably connect the ends of said strip to form a band having a diameter slightly greater than the diameter of the plate of a pie to be covered whereby said band may be pressed down about said plate and a cover over a pie there on to fold the edge portions of the cover over the edge of the plate, means for thereafter securing together the ends of said strip to form a band of smaller diameter +whereby to draw the folded edge portions of the cover against the edge of the plate, and means on the strip to cooperate the plate inwardly of its outer edge when the strip forms the smaller band to retain the band and cover on the plate.

8. A holder for a pie cover, the same comprising a flexible strip having spaced longitudinally extending slot-s therein, said strip adapted to be drawn about a pie plate to draw portions of a cover against the edge thereof and secure the cover over a pie thereon and dispose portions of the edge of the pie plate in said slots, complemental means on the respective end portions of the strip whereby said end portions may be connected to secure the strip in place, and said complemental means comprising a notch extending through an edge of said strip adjacent one of its ends and a second extending through the opposite edge of said strip adjacent its other end.

9. A holder for a pie cover, the same comprising a flexible strip having longitudinally extending slots therein, said strip adapted to be drawn about a pie plate to draw edge portions of a pie cover against the edge of the plate and dispose sections of the edge portion of the plate in said slots, means to secure together the end portions of said strip when it is so drawn, and said means including means adapting said strip for use on pie plates of different diameters.

10. A holder for a pie cover, the same comprising a flexible strip having spaced longitudinally extending slots therein, said strip having.a notch in one of its edges adjacent one of its ends, said strip having a pair of spaced notches in its opposite edge adjacent its other end, said notch adjacent one end of the strip adapted to be engaged with one of the notches adjacent the opposite end thereof to form a band of a diameter slightly greater than the diameter of the plate of a pie to be covered whereby said band may be pressed down about .said plate and a cover over a pie thereon to fold the edge portions of the cover over the edge of the plate, said strip adapted thereafter to have its end portions drawn into further over-lapping relationship to form a band of smaller diameter and draw the folded edge portions of the cover against the edge of the plate and dispose portions of the edge of the plate in said longitudinally extending slots, said notch adjacent one end of the strip adapted to be thereafter engaged with the second notch of of said pair of notches to secure the end portions of the strip together in such further over-lapping relationship, and said strip having a second pair of notches inwardly of said first pair of notches whereby to adapt said strip to hold covers on plates of different diameters.
