HARROD ICE CREAM CONTAINER Filed Feb. 6, 1931 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 gwomtoz HORACE fl- HAP/70D Patented Mar. 21, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE nonaon n. nannon, or monnrs, rumors 10E cnnnm conmmnn Application filed February 6, 1931.
This invention appertains to containers of the type generally employed for ice cream and for the delivery of other edibles either in a solid, semi-solid, or liquid state.
One of the primary objects of my inven tion is the provision of a cylindrical card= board container, which is so constructed that thesame can be folded flat when not in use, so as to permit the storing or shipping thereof in a minimum amount of space.
Another salient object of my invention is the provision of a cardboard container, w 'ch can be readily set up into an operative leak-proof form for receiving the ice cream or other material being dispensed.
A further prime object of my invention is the provision of a false bottom of disc shape conforming to the configuration of .the body of the container for fitting into the container after the same has been set up and before the same 'is filled with thematerial to be dispensed, the false bottom acting as means for holding the container in its set up position. against accidental folding as a further means for preventing the leakage of matter from the container.
A further important object of my invention is the provision of novel means for form.-
mg the bottom wall of the container and novel means of connecting the bottom wall with the body of the container, whereby the body of the container'and bottom wall will act together as a single unit and so associated as to permit the ready setting up of the container for use.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a collapsible cylindrical pasteboard container of the above character, which 40 will be durable and eflicient in use, onewhich will be simple and easy to manufacture, and one which can be placed upon themarket at a reasonable cost.
With these and other objects in View, the
invention consists in the novel construction,
arrangement and formation of arts, as will be hereinafter more specifical y described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved collapsible. cylindrical Serial No. 514,038.
container showing the same in its collapsed condition, parts of the container being broken away and in section to illustrate the construction thereof. l I I Figure 2 is a transverse section through the container in its collapsed form taken on the line 2-2 of F igure 1- looking in the direction of the arrows. Figure 3 is a'vertical section through the 1 container in a collapsed position.
Figure 4 is'an enlarged detail horizontal section taken on the lineof Figure 1 looking in the direction pfthe arrows, illustrating the novel means employed for connectmg the bottomwall with the-body of the 'contamer.
Figure 5 is anjenlargedfragmentary de- I tail vertical section taken on theline of Figure 4 illustrating in detail-the means of connecting the bottom wall'with the body elevation of my containcream to be dispensed,
section through Figure 8 is a section taken on the line 8 8 of Figure 6.
Figure 9 is a false bottom.
Figure 10 isan enlarged fragmentary perspective View showing the container in a set detail perspective view of the up condition and illustrating the arrangement of the bottom wall with the body of the container. r
Figure 11 is an enlarged detail view illustrating a preferred way of constructing the body of the container. P Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designates corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A generally indicates my improved container, which is preferably constructed from'cardboard or similar flexible material, suitably treated to render the same liquid proof. The container is to ,be made in I various sizes to suit the demands of the trade and can have advertising matter printed on the sides thereof, if desired or preferred.
M improved container A comp-rises a body 15 formed from a single sheet of blank material folded with its longitudinal sides in overlapping relation and suitably connected together, such as by the use of rivets or.
, with an inturned annular flange 18', for a purbe folded in half pose which will, be later described, and this flange may be slit at the score lines 17 to facilitate the collapsing of the body 15 of the container.
In conjunction with .the collapsible body 15 I employ a collapsible bottom wall 20, which is preferably, permanently secured to the said body 15. The bottom wall 20 is of a disc shape to conform to the exact configuration of the body of the box when the same is in its set up condition and this bottom wall is provided I tending score line 21 to permit the walls to and to be collapsed with the body of the container; The bottom wall at its periphery is provided with bendable radially disposed tabs 22 as clearly shown in Figure 1 of the drawings.- Diametrically op posed tabs 22 are inserted between the side .wall of the body and the flange 18 thereof.
and are connectedwith the side wall of the body and the said inturnedflange 18 in any preferred way, such as by the use of rivets 23. Additional rivets 24 can be employed for uniting the flange 18 with the side wall of the body at spaced points, but it is to be container.
notedthat these rivetsare disposed well below the free edge of the flange, so as to leave the free edge of the flange slightly spaced from-the side wall of the container.
Normally the body of the box is collapsed with theopposite sides folded flat one/against the other as permitted by the. score lines 17, and the bottom Wall 20 is folded on its score line 21 'so as to lie within the body'of che shipped flat and thus the same will occupy afminimum amount of space. J
When itis desired to set up the container,
I the opposite sides of the container at the score lines 17 above the bottom wall 20 is pressed inwardly and downwardly, which will force the body-15 into a cylindrical shape and spread the bottom wall 20. The hand of the operator can be inserted within the body 15 and the bottom wall 20 can be forced downward to assume its proper shape, and the I tabs 22 are swung downwardly at right as indicated by the I after the same has with a diametrically ex- This allows the container to be angles and will ride between the side wall of the body and the flange 18 and be held frictionally in place. This forms a substantially leak-proof construction. A false bottom 25 of disc shape is forced into the body 15 on top of the bottom wall 20. The false bottom 25 frictionally engages the side wall of the body and tends to hold the body in proper shape against collapsing and also acts as means for providing a leak-proof construction.
struction can be laced on the container, been set up and filled with the material to be dispensed. As shown, the same embodies a disc 27 which engages over .the upper edge of the container and an an-' nular flange 28 formed of laminated cardboard, which fits snugly within the containr.
the-container and also allows the same to be folded flat without buckling.
From the foregoing description, it can be seen that I have provided a novel form of 001- la sible cylindrical container, which can he" s ipped in a flat conditionand which can be readily set up for use.
Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or the scope of this invention.
= What I claim as new is:
A collapsible food container of the cylindrical type comprising a tubular body provided at opposite diametric points with score lines defining side walls collapsible one upon the other, said side-walls being provided with equa-distantly spaced longitudinally extending score lines, w ereby the said side walls will be rendered flexible, inturned' bottom flanges formed on one end of the body, a disc shaped bottom wall foldable on a diametric line arranged within the body, foldable tabs formed on the periphery of the bottom wall, certain of the tabs at opposite diametricf points bei'ngreceived at all times between the side walls and the flange, means permanently securing said last mentioned tabs in position, sald other tabs being received between the side walls and the flange upon spreading of the side walls to an open position, a false bot tom of disc shape detachably fitted on the bottom wall, and a removable cover for the upper end of the container and having means A closure or cover 26 of any desired conmaintaining the cylindrical form of the container.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
