This invention relates to combination cases' or receptacles and more particularly to an' ash receiver or tray.

An object of this invention is to provide an ash' receiver or tray which is so constructed as to provide means whereby the burning cigarette may be supported by a chamber or case hinged to the cigarette holder, the chamber including means to receive ashes 1 from the burning cigarette.

A further object of this inventionis to provide a case oi this kind which is capable of being made into a relatively small coinpact device so that it can be readily carried in a pocket or pocketbook.

A still further object of this invention is to provide a. device of this kind embodying means whereby the ashes from the cigarette may be readily emptied from the ash receiver.

Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals of reference designate correspond- 45 ing parts throughout the several views, the numeral 10 designates generally a holder or case which is hinged, as. at 13, to a second receptacle or tray 11. The holder 10 is Vprovided with a catch 12 for en agement with an outstanding lug14 carried y one edge of the ash receptacle or tray; 11 so as to hold the two receptacles in closed position.

A substantially rectangular-shaped cigarette holder 15 is mounted within the receptacle 10 and through the provision of a shaft or pintle 16 which extends through the holder 15 adjacent the closed end thereof, the holder f 15 is adapted to have relative movement so thatthe open end portion 17 may be swung outwardly so that cigarettes 18 positioned therein may be readily withdrawn.

Preferably, the holder or receptacle 10 is of a length substantially equal to the length of conventional cigarettes so that when the hinged, as at 23, to the pintle of the hinge i3. This plate or top 22 is held in closed position by a catch 24 which engages the inner edge' of the flange 21 and is adapted to resiliently hold the top 'or closure 22 in closed position. The top 22 is provided at the desired point with an opening 25 through which the cigarette ashes or the like may be dropped and thisopening 25 is closed by means of a,

closure or plate 26which is hinged, as at 27, to the top of the plate or ash tray closure 22.

l A spring 28 is disposed about the pintle, of the hinge 27 and engages the closure 26 s0 as to constantly urge this closure 26 into open position. A pivoted locking member 29 is carried by the top plate or closure 22 and is swingable into the path of the closure 26 when this closure is in closed position so as to lock the closure over the opening 25 and prevent leaking out of the ashes or other articles placed within the chamber 20.

A cigarette rest 30 is secured to the under face of the closure 26 and this rest 30 is of arcuate construction in transverse section and is of a lenglth less than the length of the open-l ing 25 so t at the closure 26 will lie flat on top 1 2 L neoaoss of the closure plate 22 when in closed posi-l tion. When the locking member 29 is swung into. released-position, the spring 28 will swing` the closure 26 into open position and in this position, the cigarette rest will be in operative position so that a cigarette may be placed thereon and the burning end portion i positioned over the opening 25 to permit the ashes to drop into the tray or chamber 2,0.

As shown in Figure 6, the cigarette holder 10a has an ash tray or holder 11a hingedl secured thereto and the top 22a of this as tray is flXedly secured thereto. rIhis top 22e has an opening 25atherethrough and a clo- -,sure 26a is hingedly secured tothe top 22a and end walls of the receptacle 11a so that the surface oi the bottom 3l will be lHush with the edges of the side and end walls.

As shown in Figure 7, the ash receiver or tray 1lb is provided with a fixed top 22b and a fixed bottom 31a. In this receiver il", one end of the receiver is open and a hinged closure 25 is hingedly secured, as at '36, to the receiver and is held in closed position by means of acatch 37 engaging a lug 38 carried by the sidewall oi' the receiver l1". It will be obvious from the oregoing that the ash receiver or tray 11 may be emptied o its ashes in any desired manner.

in the use and operation of this device, the cigarette holder 15 may be lled with the desired number of cigarettes and when it is desired to remove the cigarettes therefrom, the inner end of this holder i5 may be swung outwardly to the limit of its movement, which movement is limited by reason of the angular end portion 39 which engages the adjacent wall of the chamber` 10. When the cigarette has been lighted, it can be heid on the rest 30 by turning the catch 29 so as to release the plate 26 and permit the spring 28 to swing this closure plate 26 into open position so as to hold the rest member 30 in cigarette receiving position. i l

It is, of course, understood thatvarious changes and modiiications may be made in the details of construction anddesign of the above specifically described embodiment of this invention Without departing from the i spirit thereof, such changes and modiications being. restricted only by the scope of the 65 following claims.'v

What is claimed is i- 1. An ash tray comprising a member having an open to a top plate for the member having an as receiving opening therethrough, means for hinging the plate to said member, a closure for said opening, means for hingedly mounting said closure for swinging movement over said o ening, resilient means constantly urgin sai closure into open position, releasable oeking means for holding the closure in closed position, and a transversely curved member carried by the closure and swingable within said opening upon swinging of the closure into closed position.

2. An ash tray comprising a member having an open top, a top plate carried by the member and having an ash receiving'opening therethrough, a closure plate, means for hingedly mounting the closure plate for swinging movement across said opening, means releasably loeking'the plate `in closed position, a cigarette rest on one face of the plate and swingable to a' position within the opening upon movement of the ciosure plate into closed position 'and swingable into a position outwardly oi' the top plate upon movenient of the closure plate into open position, and means to permit withdrawal oashes within said member.

3. An ash tray comprising a member having an open top, a closure for said top, a hinge means for said closure, said closure having an opening therethrough to permit ashes to be placed in said member, a iange carried by the side and end walls of said member upon which the closure is adapted to rest when in closed position, means carried by the closure and engaging one oi' the flanges to releasably hold the closure in closed position, a plate, means for hingedly mounting the plate on said closure for swinging movement across said opening, and a cigarette rest carried by one face of said plate and adapted to be disposed within said opening upon movement ot said plate into closed position.
