The outer end of the closure cap 9 is provided with a pocket or recess for the reception of an eraser 1l. Secured on the inner end of the plunger stem 8 is a plunger head 12 having a pair of spaced stop flanges between which a plurality of movable and relatively shiftable plunger head packing discs or rings 13 are mounted. The inner peripheral surface of the ink guard 18 is out of contact With the pen point and the feed bar7 thereby providing a chamber around the pen point and feed bar for the reception of excess or returned ink to prevent the excess ink from settling on the outer end of the ink guard 18 and also obviating the accumulation or settling of ink against the stop flange 17 of the section 16. The excess ink in the ink guard is thus permitted to gradually pass backwardly through the feed passage of the feed bar into the fountain pen barrel l.
Removably engaged on the pen point end of the fountain pen barrel 1 is a .fountain pen cap 2l provided with an internally threaded section 22 in the inner peripheral surface'thereof a.short distance from the outer or open end of said cap to permit the cap section 22 to have threaded engagement with the threaded section 15 of the fountain pen barrel. Seated or secured in the closed end of the fountain pen cap 21 is a stop sleeve 23 the outer end of which provides a stop shoulder adapted to seat against the stop fiange 17 of the section 16 with the ink guard 18 projecting into the stop sleeve 23 as clearly illustrated in Figure 1.
Removably threaded on the outer end of the bushing 7 is one internally threaded end 0f a union or coupling 24 which is also internally threaded at its opposite end. Secured or integrally formed transversely Within the coupling sleeve 24 is a partition 25 dividing the interior of the coupling sleeve into a chamber 26 and a chamber 27. The chamber 26 is provided for enclosing the plunger head 9 lustrated in Figure 3, and when the coupling sleeve 24 is engaged on said bushing 7 the plunger head and the eraser are com'- pletely enclosed by means of the partition 25.
Removably engaged in the outer end of Vthe coupling sleeve 24 is an externally threaded neck or collar 28 which is integrally formed on one end of a pencil body section 29 Which is provided with a magazine or lead receiving chamber 30 for the storage of extra leads 31 around an axially disposed sleeve or tube 32 in which the lead feeding and retracting mechanism of the pencil are` mounted. Connected With the sleeve 32 and rotatable With respect to the pencil housing 29 is a lead feed tip or end section 33, the tapered outer end of which is passaged for and the eraser 11 as ilthe reception of a stick of writing lead 34 which is adapted to be fed outwardly or retracted into the tip 33 when said tip is rotated with respect to the body section 29 of' the pencil mechanism. The threaded collar 23 of the pencil mechanism is adapted to be threaded into the interiorly threaded chamber 27 of the coupling sleeve 24, thereby removably holding the fountain pen and the pencil connected together by means of said coupling sleeve 24 as clearly illustrated in Figure 3.
Attention is called to the fact that the partition coupling sleeve 24 is provided with the two separated chambers 26 and 27 permitting the pencil to be coupled with the fountain pen without projecting directly into the fountain pen barrel to reduce the ink capacity of the foutain pen. The double chamhered coupling 24: affords a suitable removable closure for the plunger head and the eraser l1 attached thereto in addition to affording a suitable way for connecting the mechanical pencil with the fountain pen without interfering with the ink capacity of the fountain pen.

The intake tube 35 projects into the fountain pen barrel l and into the plunger stem 8 as illustrated in Figure 3, so that when the compressible valve collar or sleeve l within 'the plungerV cap 9 is moved outwardly cut of engagement with the ink intake tube with the outward movement of the plunger mechanism, the contents of the fountain pen barrel l is permitted to be ejected through the tube 35 and the intake passage of the feed bar so that the interior of the fountain pen is thoroughly cleaned cut with the outward stroke of the plunger mechanism.
To fill the fountain pen, the pen point and the tip of the feed bar 2() are projected into a supply of inlr and the plunger mechanism is pushed inwardly, thereby creating a suction or vacuum action within the fountain pen barrel i, causing a fresh supply of ink to be pulled upwardly through the feed bar passage and the feed tube into the interior of the plunger stem 8 and out through an opening 36 in the plunger stem 8 to enter the ink chamber of the fountain pen barrel 1. A supply of ink 37 is thus adapted to be admitted into the transparent lbarrel of the fountain pen with the downward or inward stroke of the plunger mechanism permitting the supply of ink 37 to be clearly visible through the transparent barrel 1 as clearly illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawing, so. that a person may readily observe the amount of ink contained Within the fountain pen.
When the fountain pen has been filled as described, the couplin sleeve 24 is again threaded onto the t readed bushing 7, thereby connecting the mechanical pencil with the fountain pen. When the fountain pen is in use and the closure cap 21 is removed from the pencil point end of the device said cap may be removably engaged over the pencil end of the device, if desired. To use the eraser 11, it is only necessary to unscrew the coupling sleeve 24, thereby exposing the eraser 1l which may be conveniently used. To replace the lead in the pencil, it is only necessary to unthread the pencil body section 29 from the outer end of the coupling 24 to permit a used lead to be removed from the magazine chamber 30 for insertion into the outer end of the tip section 33 forming a part of the pencil mechanism;

l claim as my invention:
l. A writing instrument comprising, a fountain pen having an ink visible barrel with `a plunger rod reciprocable therein and extending therefrom terminating in a plunger head, a casing provided with means defining a chamber adapted to receive pencil leads and being open at one end to permit removal or insertion of said leads, and a cylindrical member removably connecting said pen and said casing, said member having an interior partition roviding closure means for the plunger head and of said pen and for an end of said casing, said casing being insertible in said cylindrcal member to abut said partition.
2. ln combination, a fountain pen having a barrel with a plunger' rod reciprocable therein and extending therefrom terminating in a plunger head, a casing provided With means dening a chamber adapted to receive pencil leads and being open at one end to permit removal or insertion of said leads, means to enclose said plunger head and to provide support for and a closure for said casing, said means comprising a cylindrical coupling member removably connecting said pen and said casing, said member having an interior partition, said casin being insertible in said member to abut .sai partition.
