In a device of this kind it is'necessary to spread aggregates at a greater width than that of the truck body and of the truck wheels in order that the surface to bev traversed by the truck in the backing up of 11 of the truck above he normal bot-tom surface of the truck body and encasing the same with closure plates 12 and 13.

When it is desired to remove the spreader head from the truck body to facilitate the use of-thetruclr body for other purposes the spreader head is removed fromthe truck body and the closure plate 33 closes the opening through the bottom of the truck and side plates 34 are placed across the openings in the side walls of the truck body to cover the openings of the side as illustrated at 11.
In order to eliminate the finely con minuted dust particles from the, aggregate being used as the top dressing, I place a bracket 35 upon the rear end of the chassis frame and secure a chest 36 tothe lower end of thesame. One or more flexible tubes 37 deliver air in sufficient volume and pressure A'slit 38, or a plurality of nozzle heads 39 are disposed in the' chest 36 to permit the air blast passing through the. stream 40 of the material being delivered from the spreader head and to remove the same by cil ities for blowing the air through the stream of material, *being discharged from the spreader head, toward, or away from the line'ot travel of the truck in order to prevent the dust particlesbeing blown from e the aggregate and being deposited upon the freshly laid binder. In a device of the class described, the combination of *a truck body, a spreader head removably secured to the base-and the side walls of the'truck body and adapted to receive aggregates therefrom directly into the spreader head, means for uniformly distributing the aggregate within the spreader head, settable means for predetermining the breadth of opening disposed longitudinally of the spreader head through which aggregates are to be released, and means for regulating the depth of opening from a remote control. In a device of the class described, the combination of a truck body, a spreader head removably secured to the truck body and adapted to receive aggregates through the bottom and side walls of the truckbody into the spreader head, means for distributing the aggregate uniformly within thespreader' head, a hinged closure on the spreader head, and means for momentarily actuating the hinged closure from a remote control.

Ina device'of the class described, the combination of a spreader head adapted for being removably secured to a truck body, a hinged closure disposed longitudinally of the spreader head and adapted for predetermining the depth of arelease passageway leading through one of the longitudinal walls of the spreader head, and settable means for predetermining the depth of opening release and means for momentarily actuating the hinged closure from a remote control. 1 a 5 1 7. In a device of the class described, the combination of a spreader headadapted for being removably secured to an automobile truck vbody, intercommunicating passageways disposed between the spreader head and the interior" of" the truck body and through the base and side wall of the truck body, ahinged closure for the spreader head which the aggregates to be spread, are released andsettable means for predetermining the depth ofopening to be created.

In a device otthe class described, the combination of a spreader head adapted for being secured to the rear ofthe bottom of the truck body, inter-communicating passageways leading from the truck body to the spreader head, a settable discharge opening disposed longitudinally of the spreader head, the ends of the discharge opening being lower than the center, relative to a horizontal line, means for predetermining the amount of opening to which the aggregates are to flow, means for momentarily manipulating the adjustable closure of the opening, from a remote control, and means for removing the dust particles from the aggregate by an air current, after the same have been released from the spreader head.'

In a device of the class described, the combination of a truck body, a distributor head removably secured-to the underside of head, the endsof the discharge outlet being lower than the mid section, settable means for predetermining the opening of the discharge outlet, means for momentarily changing the depthfof the outlet to prevent the materials to be discharged through the outdischarging an air blast through the stream flow of aggregate being discharged from the distributor head.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a truck body, a spreader head disposed below the truck body and removably secured thereto, thebottom of the truck body being cut out to 'faoilitatethe crushed rock passing therethrough into the spreader head, the spreader head beingof a greater width than that ofthe truck body, the side walls of the truck being cut out and passageways formed integral therewith to facilitate the crushed aggregate passing therethrough and into the ends of the spreader head, means for removably securing the spreader head assembly to the truckbody, means for closing the openings in the bottom and the side walls of the truck body when the spreader head is removed from the truck body, means for releasing a stream of aggregate, of predetermined thickness, from the spreader head, and means for aerating the aggregates after release from the spreader head and before the aggregate reachesthe roadway. In a deviceot the class described," the combination of a truck body, a spreader let, from arching thereover, and means for r head, of greater width than the over-all width of the truck body, removably secured to the truck body, intercommunicatmg passageways disposed between the bottom and the side walls of the truck body and the spreader head, adapted to deliver crushed rock from the truck body to the total width of the spreader head, means for releasing the spreader head from the truck body and for closing up the intercommunicating openings in the bottom and the side walls of the truck, means for predetermining the stream depth that is to be released from the spreader head, and means for blowing an air current through the stream of aggregate, as the aggregate falls to the roadway.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a truck body, a spreader head removably secured to the underside of the truck body, means for delivering aggregates from the truck body, through the sides of and the bottom of the truck body, and into the spreader head, settable means for predetermining the depth of the stream flow of aggregates from the spreader head, and means for forcing an air current through the stream of aggregate after the same leaves the spreader head.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a truck body, a spreader head secured to the truck body, means for passing crushed aggregates through the side walls and the bottom of the truck body and into the spreader head, means for releasing. aggregates from the spreader head in a predetermined depth and means for forcing an air current through the aggregates after release from the spreader head.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a spreader head, a discharge opening disposed adjacent the lower edge of the spreader head, a closure plate for the spreader head, settable means for placing the plate for predetermining the depth of the opening, and means for forcing an air current, from either side, through the materials after they are released from the spreader head.
15. In a device of the class described, the combination of a spreader head, a discharge opening, of settable depth, disposed through one side of the spreader head, and means for forcing an air blast through the materials after they are discharged from the spreader head.
16. A method of spreading aggregates upon a binder surface of a roadway, consisting in the placing of the aggregates in a spreader head mounted upon a truck, the backing of the truck and the releasing of the aggregates from the spreader head,and the depositing of the same upon the binder coated surface and the blowing of the dust from the coating material as the same drops from the spreader head to the roadway, to
be top dressed.

19. A method of top dressing a roadway coated with abinder agent, consisting in the spreading of the top coating in a stream upon the roadway and the forcing of'an air current through the stream, in advance of the same reaching the coated surface of the roadway.
