It is an Object of the present invention to provide a rotary'mixer having a discharging hopper which is fixed duringthe discharging operation, and wherein provision is made for misalinement ofV they rot-aryc'mixer and discharginghopper. In accordance with the present invention the mixer comprises a rotary mixing chamber having a discharging hopper' which may rotated therewith during the mixing operation.. In operation the head 14-is in operative engagement'with the collar 12 through the yielding operative connection comprising the sleeve 24, packing 22, retaining plate 18y and wear plate 20, and duringl the mixing operationthe head 14 is permitted to rotate in unison with themixing drum 2.

When'the mixed or blended powder is" ready to be discharged the rotation ofthe' drum 2 is`-stopped in such position by the operativethat the discharge opening 16 is turned downward. The discharge head 14 has one or more lugs 52 projecting from the side thereof which have a hole 43 bored therein to receive a locking pin 54. In discharging position, the lug 52 is adapted to be engaged by atoggle link 50 forked at one end to embrace the lug- 52and having the holes 47 and 49 in its prongs toregister with the hole43 in the lug 52. The opposite end of the toggle link 50 is hinged in a suitable manner to a second toggle link (notrshown) which in turnis pi'voted to the frame of the machine. The toggle link 5() is locked to the lug 52 by the locking pin 54 which passes through the holes 47 and 49 in the toggle link 50 and the hole 43 inthe lug 52 to hold the discharge head/*against rotation. The mixingdruinis nowr set in motion bytheoperative. Because the. operative connection between'thehead 14 anddrum 2 depends only on -frictional engagement ofthe compressed packing 22: against the sleeve 24, the drum 2 is capable of rotation' free of the discharge head.- In this position, the closure 40 which is held in frictional engagement with 4the seat 5 will rotate with the drum about the shaft. 30, which is locked against rotation by the lock nut- 38 coactingwiththe abutment 34. Of course, itfwill be understood that nif desired,vthe mixing operation may be carried out in this position, but since relative motion of .rotatingdrum 2; and @fixed discharge hopper 14 will result-.in wear on they packing 22, 'this practice, should be avoided as much as possible.

Since the scoop 48 rotates with the shaft 30 'a 'suitable marker may be placed on `the hand wheel 36 to show lthe operative-when the. scoop" is in discharging position. The closure 40 yis locked in open position and the chute 48is locked in discharging lposition by turning the locking nut 38 against the abutment 34. The vanos in the drumy 2-will carry material to the top of the drum as the drum rotatesfromwhence it will drop into thescoop 48 and be directed through'the opening 10 and through the opening 16 intof a suitable receptacle.
The discharge hopper 14 may be used for charging the drum 2, or a separate manhole maybe provided in the drum for'j this purpose. For mixingmaterials in which dusting is not objectionable the closure 40 may be omitted, if desired, or the apparatus may be operated with the closure open and the 'discharge scoop 48 in inverted position.

The form of the apparatus illustrated ,in the drawing is a preferred embodiment ofimy invention shown in relationship with a mixing device of conventional design, and it is not intended that the invention should be limited to the specific device shown and described, except as defined by the-claims.

A mixing apparatusn comprising a rotatable mixing drum having a discharge opening inone end thereof, a discharge hopper carried bythe drumand rotatable therewith communicating with said opening, 'a shaft extending axially through said open-- ing and mounted infthe discharge hopper, a dischargingscoop within the drum and Asecured to said shaft, a closure for said-'opening mounted on said shaft and rotatable with said drum, means for holding the discharge hopper in a fixed position while said drum rotates, and means for moving` said shaft axially to,;move'said closure in and out of closing position-and to movesaid scoop in and out of discharging position.
7.- A mixing apparatus having in combination a rotatable drum having a discharge opening inione end thereof', aV discharge hopper carried by the drum communicatingwith the discharge opening, a yielding operative connectionbetweenthe drum and'said hopper to cause said hopper ,to rotate with the drum, means forrholding said discharge hopper stationarywhile the drum rotates, and ak discharge scoop withinthe drum and carried by thedischarge'hopper for directing the discharge of material through said opening. 8. A mixing apparatus having in' combination-a rotatable drum having a discharge opening in oneendthereof, a discharge hopper carried bythe drum and communicating with the discharge opening. a yielding oper-- ative connection between the drumand s aid hopper to cause said hopper to rotate with the drum, means for causing said operative connection to yield to-holdsaid hopper stationary while the drum rotates, a discharge scoop .within the drum todireCtthe'dis- 10fty charge of material through said opening, i
supporting means carried by said hopper for supporting the scoop, and meansfor-moving said scoop and supporting means into and out of discharging position.

Amixing apparatus comprising a horizontal rotatable drum havinga'coaxial discharge opening. inone en d thereof, a supporting collarsurrounding saidopening, a discharge hopper carried by said .collar and operatively connected thereto by ayielding con-v nection, a closure seated in said discharge opening and rotatable with said drum, supporting means for said closure locked to rotate with said discharge hopper, and means to cause said yielding'connection to yield.

Amixing device comprising a mixing chamber in the form of a horizontal rotatable cylinder,-a flared collar secured to' one end of the cylinder and provided with an opening positioned axially of the cylinder, a discharge hoppercarried by said collar rotatalble with said cylinder andmounted for rotationV 'with reference to said collar, means for preventing the passage of material 'be-A tween said collar and discharge hopper, and
means for holding thedischarge hopper sta- ,tionary while said cylinder continues to rotate.

A mixing device comprising a mixing chamber in the form of a horizontal rotatable cylinder, a flared collar secured to one end of the cylinderand provided With an opening positioned axially of the cylinder, adischargehopper carried by said collar rotatable with said cylinder and mounted for rotation With reference to saidcollar, means for preventing the passage'of material between said collar and discharge hopper, a shaft secured to said discharge hopper and extending axially' through said opening, anda closure for said opening mounted on said shaft and rotatable with said cylinder.` Y

A mixing device comprisinga rotatable mixing chamber having a lateral discharge opening therein, a discharge hopperin align-v ment With the discharge opening and rotatable relative thereto, means for coupling the. discharge hopper to the mixing chamber to Vcause rotation in unison therewith, and a chute Within the mixingchamber movable into and out of position to discharge material from said mixing chamber into said discharge hopper.
13. The combination which comprises a mixer having a discharge opening therein,
a discharge hopper aligned With a discharge openingfin the mixer positioned to receive material discharged from said mixer through said opening, said discharge hopper having a radially positioned outlet, means for permitting independent rotation of said'discharge hopper with respect to the, mixer, and means for coupling the discharge hopper to the mixer to cause rotation in unison therewith. t y

The combination Which comprises a mixer, a discharge hopper aligned with a discharge openingin the mixer, means for permitting independent rotation of said discharge hopper, a shaft passing axially through said hiopper, Y a closure member mounted Von said shaft, a Vchute mounted onj said shaft-and Within the mixer, means for imparting lateral movement to said shaft, and means for coupling the discharge hopper to vthe mixer to cause rotation in unison therewith.

The combination comprising a rotatable mixing chamberhaving a discharge opening therein, a discharge hopper carried by the mixing chamber and rotatable therewith, means Within vthe mixing chamber to direct material through the dischargeiopening, supporting means for said lirst mentioned means carried by the discharge hopper,means for locking said supporting means for rotation with said hopper, andmeans for holding said hopper in fixed position Avvhile the mixing chamber rotates.l Y 16.
