The guide 20 is provided with an enlarged base 25, which not only forms a support for the guide,'but forms the bottom wall of the chamber 5, the diameter of the base being such that the valve 16 may be entered or re- 10 moved thru the opening in which the base I fits. The peripheral edge of the base is provided with a flange 26, which'fits a recess 27 in the lower edge of the chamber 5 so that when the cylinder is clamped to theengine base in the usual'manner, the guide'20 will be locked in position within. the chamber 5.
' In addition to forming a closure for the lower end. of the chamber 5, the base25 forms a closure for the opening 28 in the top portion of the crank case 8, thru whichrthe tappet 17 projects. The base 25 may be provided with one or moreports 29 thru which the lubricant within thechamber 5 may descend onto the tappet 17, and thence by gravity to the cam 21 and into the crank case 8.
