his invention relates to plumbing appli ances and more particularly refers to improvements in sanitary attachments for water closets and bidets of the type where a jet of water is used instead of paper'for personal cleansing purposes.
The idea of equipping a water closet or bidet with means for directing a jet of water against the body of the user for sanitary purposes, is not in a broad sense new. Appliances of this type howevenhave heretofore generally been made in forms requiring a.
special construction of water closet bowl, or else in forms adapted to be attached to water closetshaving specially provided attaching means. H y w in either case, the necessity of making special provisions for the sanitary feature thus added is efiective in considerably curtailing the practical field of its application, limiting its use as it doesto new or specially equipped bathrooms.
In two other patent'applications, entitled Method of and apparatus for sanitary cleansing, Serial No. 483,234 and Cleansing nozzle for water closet, Serial No. 485,440 filed by us, arrangements have been described, comprising sanitary attachments in unitary form, said attachments comprising a stand upon which all the operating parts are mounted, said stand having a base adapted to be placed upon the floor alongside the toilet bowl.
o have found by experience that in certain instances, it is desirable to avoid the use of a floor stand. In some cases, the required floor space is not available and in all cases the installation entails the necessity of drilling the floor and embedding therein some suitable attaching means such as expansion bolts or wood blocks, requiring the use of some cement of similar plastic material. h e operations usually must be performed en experienced in this class of work, and i represents a source of considerable eX- which must he added to the expense en.- ed by the connection of the device to the smirces of fluid supply, requiring operations which are purely within the scope of a plnmbers work.
Due to the conditions thus engendered by thense of devices in stand form, the instal lation expenses come to represent a material portion of the total cost, and are frequently such as to make it'impractical to adopt this class of devicesin existing water closets.
The primary object ofour invention is provide a sanitary attachment for water closets which is built complete in unit form but which does not require any stand or other means of attachment to the floor or walls, said attachment being adapted to be mounteddirectly upon the bowl of the Water closetor bidet. y a 1 ,,Another object is to provide a device of y the character specified adapted to be mounted upon and adjusted along the rim of the water closet bowl, so as to be easily placeable in the best position required by its operation A further object is to provide a device of the character specified requiring a minimum amount of labor for its installation both from the standpoint of its placement in position and from the standpoint ofconnecting it to a source of water supply.

Referring to said drawings, 20 designates a toilet bowl ofusual construction, compris- V bracket 29 upon which all the operating parts are mounted, said bracket having two hook shaped arms 30, 31,. inwardly extending therefrom, said arms being adapted to embrace the rim portion of the bowl so as to secure the device in position.
To this end, arms 30, 31 are composed of a horizontal section 32 inwardly extending from the platform 33 of bracket 29, and a set. the device downward turned, end section'34 embracing the inner portion of rim 22. Arms 30, 31' are preferably secured onto the bracket by means of screws such as 35 so as to make it easier to v in position and to remove it therefrom. f
4 The bracket is also provided with a central clamping screw 36 which may be moved towards or awayfrom the outer surface of bowl rim by means of adjusting nut portion 37. By means of said screw the bracket can be caused to firmly grip the rimportion of the bowl so as to provide a stable support forthe operating partsof the device.
In order toincrease the stability of the bracket and prevent the possibility of its tilting when downward pressure is exerted against it, said bracket preferably also is formed with a downwardly directed extension '38 equipped with an adjusting screw 39 at its lower end, said screw resting against the side surface of the bowl at a distance from the top thereof.
Said bracket furthermore, comprises an outward substantially horizontal extension 40 upon which is mounted a vertical tubular shell 41, forming the body of the device. 7 On said extension and coaxial with shell 41 is also rotatably mounted an arm carrier42 which is formed witha downward projection 43 acting as apivotal support therefor. Said 7 arm carrier is formed with a central chamher which is divided by a partition 44 into a lower or inlet chamber 45 and an upper or delivery chamber 46, the communication between said two chambers being controlled and a-rim 22 formedwith a pask connected to asource of water 'sitionswhich are defined by the by a valve 47 carried by a vertically movable V stem 48.

The device is so arranged that when the water delivery arm occupies its inoperative When the water delivery arm is moved to its operative position, nozzle 59 preferably comes to occupy a position within the bowl plunger 62, the upper portion of a spring 70 in which its axis remains on a vertical longitudinal plane passing through the center of the bowl, and is upwardly inclined towards the rear of thebowl, as advocated in our copending application No. 483,234. Water under pressure issuing from the nozzlewill therefore be projected in an upwardly inclined direction towards the rear of the bowl. More particularly, the direction of the fluid jet issuing from the nozzle will be so arranged that the fluid under pressure will strike directly against the body outlet of the occupant of the. seat in connection with which the cleansing operation is to beperformed.
The cylindrical outer surface of arm carrier 42 forms with the inner'surface of shell 41 an annular chamber within which isinserted the sleeve portion 61 of operating part of said plunger being formed with a brass knob 63. The sleeve portion of said plunger is mounted within chamber 60 so as to be axially slidable therein. Said plunger however, is restrained against rotation by'a key 64 in a wellknown manner.
I The sleeve portion 61 of said plunger is provided wi h a slot 65 which extends from a lower end 66 to an upper end 67 ,the inner end 55 of delivery arm 56 passing through said slot. The vertical extension of said slot therefore, determines the two extremes of the possible vertical displacement of the plunger. The upper portion of said slot consists of a vertical tract 68, and the lower of the slot consists of a portion 69 which is inclined and which connects the lower end of vertical tract 68 with the lower end 66 of the slot. The angular extension of the slot determined by the inclinationof tract 69 substantially corresponds to the angularextension of slot 54, so that when the plunger is in its upper or inoperative posi tion the lower end 66 of slot 65 registers with the left end of slot 54 and when the plunger is moved to its operative position the upper end 67 of slot 65 registers withthe right end of slot 54, with respect to Fig. 8.
By virtue of this construction, it will be seen that slot 65 acts as a cam controlling the movement of the fluid delivery arm, causing it to occupy its inoperative position when the plunger is in its upward position shown in Fig. 7, and causing said arm to move to itsoperative position when said plunger is forced downwardly a distance corresponding to the vertical extension of incline-d! tract 69 of slot 65.
Plunger 62 is normally maintained in its upward or inoperative position by the action interposed between the lower surface of knob 63 and the upper surface of a packing nut 71 carried by cover 7 2 of chamber 46, said packing nut insuring the tightness of the passage through which stem 48 extends upwardly from chamber 46.
The upper end73 of: stem48'is-spaced from 'the'lower surface 74 of knob 63 a distance substantially corresponding to the vertical extension of inclined tract 69 of slot 65. It will therefore be seen that when plunger 62 isforced downwardly by the hand pressing againstknob 63, the fluid delivery arm is first moved from its operative to its inoperative position by the cam action of inclined tract, 69, of slot 65. As soon asthe operative position of said arm has beenreached','the lower surface 74 of knob63 strikes against the upper end 73- of stem 48, depressing valve 47 and water can then enter chamber 46 and reach the delivery arm and nozzle 59 through theseat of said valve, said valve being de pressed against the action of spring 49.
As soon as the pressure exerted against knob 63 isreleased, spring 7 0 willforcethe plunger upwardly to its normal or inoperative position, and inclined tract169' of slot 65 will at thesame time cause the fluid delivery arm to return to its normal inoperative position. During the first part of the upward movement of the plunger, valve47 will also be forced upwardly to its closing position by the action of spring 49 so that when the fluid delivery arm begins to move back no more water issues from nozzle 59.
It'is, of course, possible to connect pipe 51 to both a source of cold water supply and a source of warm water supply; or else, if desired, it is possible to insert in said pipe an instantaneous electric water heater as shown at 75 in Fig. 1. The type of bracket described provides a very strong supporting structure for the variousop'erating parts which does away entirely with the necessity of providing a separate floor or wall stand. v Such a struc-- ture is much less expensive than a floor or wall stand and does not require a skilled worker for setting it in place. It will also be observed that the manner of operation of the device is exceedingly simple,,requiring but one movement for controlling the operation of the fluid delivery arm and the supply of water thereto.
Due to its simplicity and relatively low cost, the device can be installed in many places where the cost of a device such as described in the copending applications above mentioned would be prohibitive. Furthermore, the device. occupies 'a very limited amount of space and therefore the same can be installed in places where a device mounted on a stand could not be used.
The constructional details of our invention may vary from those shown without departing from the inventive idea. The drawings should therefore be understood as being intended for illustrative purposes onlv and not in a limiting sense. Accordingly, we reserve the right to carry our invention into practice in all those ways and manners which may enter, fairly, claims. y

In apparatus of the class described, adapted for use in connection with a closet bowl, the combination, with a fluid delivery arm movable between two extreme positions within said bowl, of a supporting bracket for said arm, hook-shaped means inwardly extending from said bracket, for resting said bracket onto, bowl, and adjustabie means,'carried by said bracket, movable against the outer surface of said bowl, for securely clamping said bracket onto said-rim. x

In apparatus of the class described, adapted foruse in connection with a closet bowl, the combination, with a-fluid delivery arm movable between two extreme, positions within said bowl, of a supporting bracket for said arm, having a downwardly extending projection, hook-shaped means inwardly extending from said bracket, for resting said bracket onto, and embracing the rim of said bowl, adjustable means, carried by said bracket, movable against the outersuriface oi saidrbowl, for securely clamping said bracket into/the scope of the appended onto said rim, and adjustable means, carried by said projection, movable against the outer surface of said bowl, to prevent tilting of the supporting bracket.

In apparatus of the class described for use in connection with a closet bowl, a nozzle movable to and from an operative position within said bowl, normally closed means for supplying fluid to said nozzle, controlling means therefor, and means movable in a given direction for moving said nozzlefrom an inoperative to its operative position, said nozzle moving means being adapted to continue moving in the same direction and actuating said fluid supply controlling means, only after said nozzle has reached its operative position. 10. In apparatus ofthe class described for use in connection with a closet bowl, a nozzle movable from an inoperative position to an operative position within said bowl, normally closed means for supplying fluid to 7 said nozzle, controlling means therefor, and
a single member for actuating said nozzle and said fluid supply controlling means, said member by a single movement first moving said nozzle to its operative position then actuating said fluid supply controlling means to supply fluid to said nozzle.

In apparatus of the class described for use in connection with a closet bowl, a nozzle movable from an inoperative position to an operative position within said bowl, normally closed means for supplying fluid to said nozzle, controlling means therefor, a single member for actuating said nozzle and said fluid supply controlling means, said member by a single movement in the same direction, first moving said nozzle to its operative position then actuating saidfluid sup-.
ply controlling means to supply fluid to said nozzle, and means for retaining said nozzle in its operative position while said actuating member continues its movement to actuate said fluid supply controlling means.
