NEWTON J. SKAGGS, OF TALLADEGA, ALABAMA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOW-STOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 190,092, dated April 24, 1877 application filled March 24, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NEWTON J. SKAGGS, of Talladega, in the county of Talladega and State of Alabama, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Single and Double Plow-Stocks and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptio of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures-of reference. marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a side elevation of my single and double plow-stock, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. 1
This invention relates to plows which can be converted at will into single-stock or double-stock plows; and it consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination here inafter particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, A designates two parallel plow-beams, preferably of metal, which are connected by cross-bars B, that are pivoted by their ends to said beams. Each beam is provided in front with a drafthook, a, and the front cross-beam is provided with a similar draft-hook, b, attached to its middle. 0 designates a brace-bar, which is arranged obliquely across said beams, and connected thereto by the same bolts that at tach the diagonally opposite ends of the front and middle cross-bar. Said brace-bar G is provided at each end with a series of perforations, 0, which allow the length of said bracebar 0 between the beams A to be diminished or increased, so as to separate said beams A or bring them nearer together.
' D designates a curved bar or plate, supported by the middle and rear cross-bars, and provided on its rear incline with a series of holes, (1, for regulating the inclination of plow'handles E, that are pivotedtogether to the lower front part of said curved bar. Said handles are also perforated to allow a bolt to pass through them, and through any one of said holes d, for the purpose of clamping said handles in any inclination to which they have been adjusted.
F designates two similar plow-standards, each constructed of double plates, with an opening between from front to rear, and provided with a plow-point, G. Said standards are pivoted to said beams, and their inclination and depth is adjusted by the means of curved bars H, each of which is pivoted by the middle on a brace-bar, I, extending obliquely downward and backward from its beam A. The upper end of each curved bar H is provided with a series of perforations, any one of which may be used in bolting said curved bar to said standard, the lower end of said bar being also pivoted thereto.
J designates two inclined runners, one of which follows each plow G. Each one of said runners is pivoted by a short arm, ,7', to the lower end of its standard, and is connected thereto also by a curved adjusting-arm, El, which is provided in its upper part with a series of holes, h, whereby it may be attached to said standard. Its inclination may be varied by changing the fastening-bolt from one of said holes to another, the said runner being tipped up or down on its pivot accordingly. These runners take the weight of the standards and beams of from the plows.
By removing the brace G and folding beams A together a single-stock plow is produced, having two standards, one behind the other, which may be used for breaking land, an ordinary plow being followed by a subsoil-plow.
By shifting curved bar B to one of said beams and removing the other beam and the crossbars a single-stock plow is produced, capable of being used with a single plow-point, in the usual manner.
What I claim as new,-and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is V The combination of pivotedstandard F with brace-bar I and curved pivoted bar 1H, having a series of holes near its upper end, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the'above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
NEWTON J. SKAGGS.
Witnesses O. LAWREY, O. WALLIS.
