DISAPPEARING BED Application filed October 12, 1931. Serial No. 568,413.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in disappearing beds and is particularly directed to the type of folding bed that is mounted within a shallow closet or recess. Y The objects of this invention are to provide a novel means for mounting such a folding bed within such a closet so that it may be swung out into the room in a variety of positionsto be unfolded for use and so that the plan dimensions of the containing closet need only be slightly larger than the plan of the folded bed. i
Other objects are to provide supporting means for the pivotally mounted end of the bed so that the strain is taken off the mounting means.
Other objects and advantages'will be apparent from the following detailed description.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a bed constructed in accordance with my invention swung partially out from the closet;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detailed plan view of one of the pivot connections with the side of the closet; Y Fig. 3 is a plan view of the bed in unfolded position in the room, the dotted lines indicating the successive stages of moving the folded bed from within the closet to the room.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the bed in unfolded position.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation showing the bed partially folded.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 is the bed spring frame pivotally mounted at 2 in a vertical plane on supporting arms 3 which are secured to the vertical arms 0f the head end frame by means of bolts 5. A vertically positioned rectangular supporting member 6 formed of bent tubing and having vertical and horizontal arms 6a and 6b, respectively, is pivotally mounted in a horizontal plane to the middle of the top and bottom arms of the head end frame 4 by means of horizontally extending bars 7 bolted to the top and bottom of the member 6 and bracket 8 and brace 9 secured to the top and bottom, respectively, of the head end 4. A closet 10 has a pair of doors 11 and mounted vertically on an outer edge of the closet is a metal anchoring angle bar 12 to -which is hinged in a horizontal Vplane the member 6, as is shown in fdetail in Fig. 2.
Part of the hinges 12a are bolted to the eX- tending part of the angle bar 12, the others 12b to one of the vertical armsV 6a of member '6 and arerpivotally joined together by pinsl.
, In operation :v The vfolded is positioned withinv` the closet 10 and thedoors 11 closed, thusI hiding it from view.` To unfold, the doors are openedandthe unit is swung out o f the closet by means of thev hinged'connections between member' 6 and angle bar-12, as
lshown in dotted lines inl Fig. 3. Vhen it has been moved sufliciently far the bed itself is pivoted about the axis formed by the mountings between the head'end 4'andthe member 6, as again shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3. It can be pivoted to numerous 'positions in the room and thenthe springframe swung down to horizontal position, as shown'in `I `igs.4and5.`." Y l' Feet 14 are provided for thefoot end of the bedthat swing open as the `bedis lowered tohorizontal position. i
In theinvention above described the entire l y Weight of the head of the bed when in unfolded position and the'entire weight of the whole bed when in folded position is borne by the memberA 6. Y
' Another means for supporting the head end of the `bed is a pair of feet 16, the ends kof which are pivoted to the side vof the frame 1 at 17, the other ends being positioned within guides 18 secured to the supporting member PATENT oI-rglcznfv JACOB HOFFMANN, OF HIGHLAND PARK, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO HUB cof '3. As the bed is lowered the feet come into l supporting position, as sho-wn in Fig. 4. f`
In the novel invention above described'I rprovide a folding bed that may be completelyV concealed within a closet Vof comparatively small size and yet may be unfolded for use in 'a variety of positionsin the room. "Icla'imr: j l .v K-
