' The invention relates toe new article of manufacture inth'e form of a combined contamer and holder or spool, for a vendible product, such as adhesive plaster, and other 6 material to be sold in wound condition.
. The invention consists in an article of the indicated character, which, in point of con struction, is well'suited for economic manufacture, and also of efficient and substantial 10 design to meet the demands of packing and delivery on the part of merchants, and the requirement for convenience in using the materlal on the part of the consumer or user.
The invention also has for its object the provision of an article of the indicated character which embodies novel and improved feature whereby a material holding section: or spool may be received and enclosed or sealed within a container section to preserve '20 the good condition of the contents of the arti cle until wanted. 7
Another object of the invention is the prov sion of a combination container and material retaining holder or spool, and means for detachably retaining the holder or spool associatedwith the container within the latter for the other aforesaid purposes; the holder or spool being retained associated with its con- 7 talner against unintentional separation yet capable of intentional separation by a simple operat on on the part of the user. W th the foregoing, other objects of the invention will appear from the embodiment of the invention which by way of example is described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which I Figure 1 is a central section through the container and holder;
Figure 2 is a section on the Figure 1; 1
F gure 3 is'a fragmentary section showing portions of the container and holderwith the notched flange of the latter in registry with 40 line 22 of the rib or key of the former;
1931. Serial No. 520,365.-
Figure i is a perspective view showing the notched flange and a portion of the core of the holder;
Figure 5 is a view of ablank used for form-1 tions, a container section 10 .and a material.
holding section 11. The container section 10 is of tubular formation, open at each end.
The container sectionlO is made preferably of sheet metal. Use is made of a blank B,
shown in Fig. 5, to form the container section 10. This blank B is of suitable length and Width warm a container section of the proper size. The blank B is cut outat the four corners to provide opposite side edges 12 and 13, which are shorter in length than the width of the blank, and top and bottom edges 14 and 15, respectively. The blank B is ormed into a tubular body, round in cross section, and the edges 12 and 13 are brought ogether to form a seam on the inside of the" body according to known methods of manufacture. The formation of thisseam provides a rib or key 16 extending longitudinally of thecontainer section '10 on the inside thereof and terminating at its opposite ends short ofthe ends of the container section thereby providing, shoulders 17 and 18 for a purpose to appear hereinafter. .Theedgel l of the blank B is rolled to provide a bead p on the outside of the entrance end. ofthe container section 10. The edge 15 of the blank B is rolled to provide a bead 20 on the inside cumferential edge of the member 23.
to provide a bead 25. The member 22 has a notch 26 in the marginal edge thereof of-a size to accommodate the rib or key 16. The member 23 is secured to the opposite end of the core 21 and this is accomplished by crimping the end of the core in engagement with the member 23 as at 27 The outer circumferential edge of the member 23 is bent back upon itself as at 28 to eliminate sharp edges and to strengthen or reinforce the cir- The member 23 isalso provided withva circular channel 29 which provides a corresponding groove to accommodate the head 19 on the entrance end of the container section 10f It will be apparent that the .end member-22 is of a diameter to fit within the container section 10, and that the end member 23 is larger in diameter than the diameter ,ofthe container section 10 and will provide a projecti hit hm e t a' e g wh h ba d ,hctien or spool 11 is associated with the container section 10 Within the same.
F 110111 the foregoing it will be apparent that the holding section or spool 11 may be placed within the container section 10 by 'grals'pingthe circumferential edge ofthe end inember ,23 of the spool. bringing the notch26in the end *memberq22 of thespool in registry with the rib or key 16 the spool ,mayEbe pushed or slid into the container section .10. By impaigting turningmovement to thespool 11 the notch 26 in the end member 22 may .be brought to a position out of registration with the rib or key 16, and the shoulder 18 provided by the rib or key will engage the end member 22 and retain the spool f11 within the container section 10. It will f'therefore be understood that the rib or key and the notched end member 22 of the spool 11 constitute-coacting means to detachably retain the spool 11, associated with the container section 10, subjectto the relative movement of the sections 10 and 11 to detach one from the other, or, in other words, to separate the spool 11 from the container section 10. g
When the spool 11 is arranged within the container section 10, the end members 22 and as erts as closures for the opposite ends of the container section 10. The bead 25 of the end member 22 will be in contact with the bead T20 of the container section, the channel 29 of the end member 23 will be in contact with the bead 19 of the container section' It will therefore be understood that the contents or, in other words, the material arranged on the core 21 of the spool will be sealed within the container section and be effect of air.
In order to separate the spool 11 from the container section 10, it is merely necessary protected from dust and the deteriorating e to grasp the marginal edge of the end member 23, and then impart turning movement to bring the notch 26 in the end member 22 tending between the opposite ends thereof, find shidholdieg qtieh having a notched 'member which co-operates with said rib to detachably retain said holding section associated with-thecontainerj-section subject to the application of turning movement and an outward pulling force on the holding section to detach from the container section. 2 A new article of manufacture comprisms th chmbi hn o a .hpntam ,s c
