' This inventionrelates generallyhtodoor" r latch constructions and re ers more particularly to .the outside handle and rollback assembles ofvehicle door latches.
5 One of the essential objects of the invention is to provide an assembl of th s type wherein means is provided or taklng up,
play between the rollback and'handle stem and for holding the stem and handle in a 9 predetermined position when the parts are I installed on the vehicle door.;
Another object. is to provide an, assembly which can be economically manufactured an easily and quicklyyinstalled. 7
tails of construction of this invention will be made more apparent asthis description proceeds, especially when considered in con-, nection with the accompanying drawing,
Figure 4 is an ed e1 elevation of another of the rollback sections;
tion illustrated in Fi ure 4.1L a
\ Referring now to t e drawing, lis a vehicle door;2 isa latch casevplate secured to the inner sideiof' the door and having a lateral flange 3 at its forward edge secured to the free edge of the door; 4 is a latch bolt extending through an opening' in the flange 3 for engagement with .a suitable keeper (not shown) and having a shank 5 slidably mounted on the case plate2 6is a spring anchored on the case plate and having1anarm7engaging the shankY5 andnormaly holding the bolt 4 in projected position. 8 is a' cover plate arranged in spaced relation tothe case Bto and to the flange 3; 9is a-handle ope 5 outer side of the door and; i

tional rollback on the stem'10 between the plates 8 'and2 and operable by thestem'and handle to effect a retraction of the :bolt 4 In the present instance the rollback 11 comprises three sections A, B and C respectively arranged side by side on the stem 10." Preferably the sections A and C are similar I andare formed fromrrelatively heavy gage sheet metal. As shown, these sections have 50 circular recesses 14, and 15frespectively opposing eachother and forming a central chamber D and have laterally projecting circular hub portions 16 and 17 respectively in alignment with said recessesl land 15 and;
journaled in aligned openings 18 and "19 respectively in the plates2 and 8. The sections A and C valso have overlapping upstanding complementary arm portions 20 and '21 [respectively that are normally engaged by a shoulder 22 of the spring pressed bolt shank 5 and are heldthereby against the lateral flange 3 of the case plate. In this connection it will be noted that the arm spor- .tions;20.and 21 are in alignment when the 2 stem receiving openings 23 and 24 {therein I are in registration. The section B is c'ircular and fits snugly within the chamber ,1)
formed by the opposed recesses 14 and 15. I
Preferably this section 'B is formed from light gage spring metal and is provided Eat one side with a vertical web-25 havin :a sub,
stantially square opening 26 receiving the stem 10 and having four lugs27 inclmi from the edges of the square opening 26an yieldably engaging the four sides of the stem 10. The section Bis also provided at sub-- stantially diametrically opposite pointsv I rectangularshaped notches 30 -and 31 respectively that receive correspondingly shaped lugs 32and' 33 respectively at diametrically opposite In use the lugs32 and 33constitute stops for holding the section B} in correct relation to the sections A and C, and the lugs 27 are under tension and-bear firmlyagainst the I stem 10 of the handle, hence when'the shoulder 22 of the spring pressed bolt shank 5' 7 bears against the arm portions 20 andf21 of no the sections A and C the intermediate section B will take up any play between the sections and stem and the latter and the handle 9 will be held in a horizontal position.
toward said flange, and means for holding and lugs extending, from the edges of the;-
opening for bearing engagement with the sides of the stem, and complementary sections having opposed recesses receiving the section aforesaid and having aligned arms for en gagement with a bolt shank, one of the last. inentioned sections having an interlocking engagement with the first mentioned section.
2. In a door latch, a case plate having a lateral flange, a handle having a stem sub- 'stantially parallel to [said flange, a spring pressed bolt shank on the plate and urged the handle and stem in a predetermined posi'tion relative to the case plate including a rollback having sections arranged side by s'ldeon said stem between the flange and shank, one of said sections being formed of relatively light gage spring metal non-rotatjably secured to another of said sections and having a yieldable portion bearing against "sa1d stem.
' 3. In a door latch, a rollback having three --sect-i ons, two of said sections being similar and having complementary arms forengage- 'ment with a latch bolt, said similar sections alsohavmg opposed recesses forming a chamher, and'the third section being wholly within said chamber, interlocked with one of the two sections aforesaid and having yieldable means engageable with a handle stem. v 4, In adoor'l'atch, a rollback having three sections arranged side by side, two of said 'isections belng similar, one of said similar sections andthe third section having interlocking engagement with each other, and the third section being enclosed by the similar {sections and having ayieldable portion for bearing engagement with ahandle stem.
