Description

R. D. ELDER VALVE HOLDER Feb. 21, 1933.
Filed Sept. 18, 1930 Patented Feb. 21, 1933 i i l er UNITED1ST/xmas PAT'ENroFFIcE Application led September 18,v 1 930. Serial No.u 482,825.
This invention appertains to improvement of the invention as' itrappears when ments in valve holders` generally and more operatively installed thereon, the latter being particularly to a form thereof for facilitat. in side elevation,v f Y p ing the overhaul and repair of the valves of -Figure 2 isa vertical section through one 5 internal combustion motors, especially those form of the device per se, l y employed in yautomobile motors of the over- Figure 3 is a-horizontalsection taken on head valve type. vthe'line 3-3 of Figure'2, Y
An object of the invention is to provide Figure 4 isa side elevation of one of the a holder of thisclass which will function. in interchangeable.adaptors per se for engagea highly eliective manner tocause a `valve ment' in a spark plug opening in the motor 6o to'be held ina proper position thata motorist head bloclgand j. l v v or a mechanic may easily and readily remove Figure 5 is, a vertical vsection through a a :broken or otherwise deficient spring theremodified form of the device. V from and replace the same with a new one Referring to the drawing, whereinlike without removing the head from the cylinder characters of reference designate correspond- 65 block of a motor as is usually necessary for ing parts in the several views thereof, and the purpose, and whereby the repair operamore particularly to Figures 1 to 4 inclusive, tion may be accomplished in but a few the embodiment of the invention, as shown minutes as compared to the three or four thereinby way of example only, is ,constitute hours time ordinarily required for'` its pered in anadaptor 10, which has the general 7@ i formance, Y v formv of the usual metal body-or shell of a Another object of the invention resides in standard formrof spark plug, andrea substanthe provisionof a` device of ,this character tiallyY tubular extension 14 arranged for dewhich is extremely simple in design, durable tachable engagement with the vadaptor 10 at' in construction', inexpensive to manufacture one end and at its otherend to the,V adjacent 75" and .easy to v be quickly yinstalled in and ree end ofl a hose or pipe` line `22 leading to a suit-4 moved from a position of use; Y able source ofV air pressure.`
Afurtherobjectof the invention lies in the These adaptors 10 are preferably made in employment ofthe device to introduce a sup; dilferentsizes .corresponding to those of the ply of air under pressureinto the combustiony metallv bodies orsh'ells ofjdifferent standard SU' chamber at the upper side of a cylinderof an sizes of spark plugs, whereby the externally over-head valve type of motor whereby the vscrew Vthreadedend portion l1 vof each may air will hold the valve in its'uppermost posi. be engaged in a like sized spark plug opention during the removall and replacement of ing in the motor`r head blocka upon the remov-` a spring and thereby preventthe Vsame from al therefromofthe spark plug normallyjseatdropping down into the motor in theinterval ed therein. Y Y v Y Y Asshown in Figure 5, the. nipple 16 may first have a form of check `valve 20 secured on the same before the air hose or line is coupled to the extension 14. v
This check valve 2O is constituted in a tubular body Ahaving its lower or inner end eX- teriorly screw threaded for engagement on the nipple 16 and its upper or outer end exteriorly screw threaded for the engagement therewith of the coupling or nozzle 17 of an air hose or line 22. VThe bore of the' valve body 2O is formed vto house an inwardly opening valve'21 within the same, which valve is preferablyof the automatic Vplunger type usually employed in pneumatictire inflation valves.
In the use of the Yvalve holder, as thus constructed and arranged, a spark plug will be removed from the head block aof an automobile motor and replaced with an adaptor 10 whose exteriorly screw threaded end, corresponds in size to that of the likeV end of the metal body or shell of the displaced spark plug. Vith the adaptor in position, the tubular extension 14- will now` have its screw Vspark plug opening, when an air supply line Y 22 will be coupled to the outer end of the-extension 14 and air permitted to pass inwardly therethrough to the combustionichamber. With a suhcient air pressure in the combustion chamber'of the motor, the defective valve will be heldY up 'thereby during the servicing Vof the same by the motoristgor mechanic. Y By thus sustaining the aEect-ed valvey in its uppermost position, the old springassoci'atedtherewith maybe readily removed and a new one placed in Vposition in but a comparatively short length of time, without fear of thevalve falling downwardly of the cylinder and without removing the head block of the motor building up of suiiicient air pressure within thecombustionvchamber of the motor without loss by leakage during the operation of the pump. 1
In any case, twenty-five pounds of air pressure within a combusion chamber has been found to be amply sufficient for the accomplishment of., the intended purposes of the invention,cbut no danger of any kind will result if a pressure up to one hundred pounds is used. y c Y -With this Ysimple adjunct tothe usual tool kit, a person on the road can replace a broken valve spring with approximately the.- same ease and expenditure of 1 time'obta-ining. inv
theY changing of a tire and of course is equally of value to the mechanic as a time and labor saving adjunct to theusual repair equipment of a motor car` garage or repair shop. y f. By providing the kouter or free end of the tubular extension 14 vof the device withthe nipple 16 for the separate engagement therewith of both the air hose or line andthe check yvalve 20, but'one4 of the lextensions 14 is necessary with eachset of diiferent sized adaptors 10 in order topermit of the universal use of the device'pwith all'types ofv extension 14 will function to allow for the air nose or line .discharge nozzles or couplingsv as will be obvious. -1 Y Y `Without further description, it is thought thatthe features and advantages of the inventionwill bereadily apparent to those skilled inthe art, andV it will of course be understood thatk changes in form, proportion and minor details: of "construction may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of the invention or its scope as claimed. Iclaim:V Y 1 L 1. A valve holder comprising an adaptor body arranged forsecured engagement with -a usual spark plug 'opening of an overhead type of internal combustion motor and having a bore therethrough, a straight extension of polygonal form projecting from said body and' having Y detachable connection therewith,
a nipple at the Vouter end of said extension, .c a valve chamber arranged for vdetachable en;
gagement with said nipple, said-extension nipple having a common bore to connect the first named bore with' said' valve chamf ber when the parts arein assembly, van inwardly opening check valve housed within said chamber, and a conduit leading from said chamber outwardly of the valve therein for connection with a source of compressed air whereby an amount of the latter Will be admitted to the engine to eeotively hold a valve in a manner to facilitate the removal and replacement of the valve spring.
2. The method of removing and replacing a damaged or broken spring of a valve of an over-head valve type of internal combustion engine, which consistsin admitting air under pressure to a combustion chamber of the engine, through the usual spark plug opening thereof, to hold the said valve in seated position duringl the removal and replacement of said spring.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
