The object of the invention is to provide a construction of hook that is easily assembled and keeps the cable taut thereby preventing it from curling, kinking and twisting. A. further object is to provide a secure anchoring device for the end of the cable and reduce the head room required to a minimum. Other objects will appear from the description and drawing.
The invention is embodied in the example herein shown and described, the features of novelty being finally claimed.
In the said draw'ing- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the hook block.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the block.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view with a portion of the upper part of the block removed and with parts in section.
Fig. 4 is a plan View of the lower side of the cover or upper part of the block.
In the views 5 designates the hook.
6 designates the lower or body member of the block, it being of wide shallow cup shape and centrally perforated to receive the threaded shank of the hook, a nut 7 with thrust washer being employed to swivelly secure the hook to said member so that the latter can be freely turned.
The body member 6 of the block is provided with an annular wire like cable receiving groove 8 with and near its rim. Between its rim and the center thereof the member 6 is provided with three equidistantly spaced holes, one of which is best shown at 9.
1O designates the upper or cover member of the block, it being of hollow conical form and having its apex provided with an orifice 10* for the passage of the wire cable v11. The lower end of the cover member 6 is provided with an annular rib 12 lying above the annular rope groove 8 when the parts are assembled. The inner side of the cover member is provided with a spiral groove 18 leading from the bottom upward to the orifice at the top. The upper member is also provided with three threaded holes 14 coinciding with the holes 9 of the lower member.
The anchoring means'for the cable 11 includes a small metallic piece 16 provided with a tapered hole, said piece 16 being set in a socket in the body member at a terminus of the annular groove 8 and lug 17 cast on the cover member. 7
The end of the wire cable 11 is inserted through the orifice at the apex of the upper block member and soldered to the piece 16. Said cable is then placed or coiled around the groove 8 and drawn up in the spiral groove 13. The cover member is then fitted upon the body member and three bolts 19 applied to clamp the body and cover member tightly down on the cable as best indicated in Fig. 2.
The parts of the block are made'of heavy metal in about the proportion to the hook shown. The block is therefore comparatively heavy and together with the hook and the other parts afford weight ample to hold the cable taut when unloaded and from twisting.
From the foregoing it will be noted that the parts of the block can be of metal cast to size and that the only machining required would be the drilling and tapping of screw holes, and the hole for the shank of the hook.
Being of smooth exterior the block cannot injure the hands of the operator or catch in his clothing.
The forms and proportions of the parts can be changed without departing from the gist of the invention as claimed.
What we claim is:
1. A line hook block for a hoist, said block including a substantially circular body member to the center of which a hook is connected, said circular body member provided with an annular seat for the coiled end of a cable and a substantially circular cover member having a central Opening for the passage of the cable, said cover member adapted to fit above said body member, and means for se curing said cover member to the body member and confine a coil of cable therein.
2. A line hook block for a hoist, said block includinga substantially circular body member to the center of which a hook is connected, said body member provided with an annular seat for the coiled end of a cable and a conoidal cover member having an internal groove and central opening for the passage of the cable, said cover member adapted to fit above said body member, and means for securing said cover member to the body member and confine a coil of cable therein.
3. A line hook block for a hoist, said block including a substantially circular body member to the center of Which a hook is connected, said body member provided with an annular seat for the coiled end of a cable and a conoidal cover member having a central opening for the passage of the cable and a cable restraining lug, and said cover member adapted to fit above said body member, and means for securing said cover member to the body member and confine a coil of cable therein.
