Description

Feb. 21, 1933. H, A SILVERNAIL 1,898,504
DETACHABLE PLATFORM 3 1 3g 2 INVENTOR \K HOWARD A. SILVERIVAIL.
/ jg M am fgm Z ATTORNEY Patented Feb. 21, 1933 UNITED STATES HOWARD A. SILVERNAIL, F CLEVELAND, OHIO DETACHABLE PLATFORM Application filed May as, 1931. Serial n}. 540,568.
My invention relates to washing machines and mangles and particularly to a combination of the two wherein a wringer is removed and a mangle substituted for it. Specifically it comprises a removable platform which changes the washing machine to a support for the mangling or ironing operations conducted above it.
The leading object of this invention is to provide means which are suitable to permit the mangling to be done in an efficient and thorough manner without interference by the subj acent washing apparatus. In fact, without this invention the ironing operations as conducted in a combination washer and mangle are at a considerable disadvantage and are performed with difliculty.
An incidental object is to provide means suitable for the above object which are easily manufactured and light. Further objects will appear hereinafter.
While only one form of the invention is described and shown mechanical equivalents and means by which the same result is obtained are included within the scope of this invention.
For a detailed description of the invention reference may be had to the following specification and accompanying drawing in which:
Figure l is a plan view of the underside of the platform embodying this invention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary section of the same taken on the line 22 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 illustrates the use of my invention with a combined washer and mangle.
Essentially this invention comprises as shown in the drawings a platform 1, a tongue 2, extending laterally from the edge of the platform and a plurality of seats 3 raised on one side for purposes to be presently described.
The platform 1 may be of any shape but is preferably elongated to extend throughout the entire length of the mangle 4t superimposed on and operated by the motor driven shaft within the casing 5 vertically positioned on the side of the tub 6 whose wall 6a is generally cylindrical in shape. The latter houses the washing machine elements and conveniently affords a support for the platform .1. The platform is preferably made of light Woodand to protect the edgesa metallic binding strip 1a is secured to the edges.
The casing 5 of the operating shaft is preferably formed with a peripheral boss'5a at its upper end, the shaft rotating within it extending up and removably keyed to the op erating shaft of the mangle (notshown) but extending within the casing 7 a; of the mangle operating elements. The lattercasing has a peripheral boss7a at its lower end which customarily rests upon the coacting surface 5a and ensures a; rigid support for the mangle structure.
The tongue 8 characterized by the U-shaped slot 2a and secured to the platform 1 is slipped over the shoulder 5a and under the boss or shoulder 70 and rigidly into which the tongue 2 may be readily fitted. v
To prevent the rotation of the platform its under side is equipped with the seats 3, preferably truncated sections of a circle whose diameter is equal to the inner diameter of the tub. These sections are of course disposed to fit within the tub and their outer periphery is preferably inwardly bevelled to form the sloping surface 3a as best depicted in Figure 2. This ensures a snug fit against the inner side of the wall 6?) and prevents the tongue likewise from slipping out of the groove, the two features combining to form a platform which though readily removable is secure and makes the washing machine the The platform and its appendages may, if desired, be formed of metal in parts or as one piece.
Various modifications of the invention as shown Will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art and are included Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A detachable platform comprising a fiat member, a forked tongue secured end- Wise thereto and seats laterally projecting from a face of said fiat member.
2. The combination of a detachable platform for demountable mangles having a forked projection on its end and lateral projections, a fixed post to receive said forked projection and a recessed support to receive and retain said lateral projections.
3. The combination of a detachable platform for demountable mangles having a forked projection and bevelled lateral projections circularly arranged, a fixed post having an annular ring to receive said forked projection and a circular recessed support to engage said bevelled projections substantially as illustrated and described.
Signed by me this 2nd day of May, 1931.
HOWARD A. SILVERNAIL.
