ABRAHAM MARCELLUS, OF AMSTERDAM, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRACK-CLEARERS FOR MOWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 8,983, dated December 29, 1857.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM MARoELLUs, of Amsterdam, in the county of Montgomery and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Track-Clearer for Mowing-Machines; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification,
in which- Figure l is a side view of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of the same, the wing being removed and a portion of the wheel broken away. Fig. 3 is a section ofthe same, taken inthe line x x, Fig. l.

This invention consists in the peculiar mode of separating the out grass from the standing grass, forming in all cases a track or space unobstructed by cnt grass adjoining the standing grass. v
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct lnyinvention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents the outer portion ot' the frainingl ot' a mowing-machine that supports the inclined wing B. This wing is of the usual form, and may be attached to the framing in the ordinary way.
U is a plate or board, which forms the trackclearer. The front end of this plate or board is pivoted, as shown at a', to the metal shoe or divider ax, fastened to the front part ofthe framing A, adjoining the finger-bar 1). The plate or board C may be constructed ot' metal or wood. Its length may be about equal to the wing B, and a slot or opening is made in the framing to allow the plate or board to pass or work through. The plate or board U has a spring, E, fastened to its inner edge, andan arm, ct, is attached to the outer side of the plate or board U, said arm having a frictionroller, b, in its outer end.
F is the wheel which supports the outer end of the framing. 'lhe body of this wheel forms a cam, it having radial elevations and depressions c d, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. The
| spring E keeps the roller b against the wheel F. The spring is made fast to the clearer C, as shown at c', while the point ofthe spring plays under the metal point of the divider, as shown at D. By the above arrangement there is no danger of the bending or breaking of the parts.
I would remark that it is not essential that the whole ot' the plate or board C pass or work througnh the framing A. A portion is sufficient-the front portion, included between the pivot a and the point b', as shown in Fig. 2.
As the machine is drawn along, the elevations c ot' the cam portion or body ofthe wheel F will operate the plate or clearer U in one direction, (see arrow 1,) while the spring E will actuate it in the opposite direction, as indicated by arrow 2, and consequently a "ibratory motion is given the clearer U, and thecut grass will be thrown ot't1 from the wing B and the standing grass.
The wingB has long been used to throw the cut grass ott" from the standing grass; but it is not an effectual device, as the grass, when heavy crops are cut, often passes over it and falls on the outer side, next the standing grass. My improvement ett'ectually obviates this diiculty.
The metal shoe or divider a* has its front end terminating in a point, and its back end is firmly attached to the trout part of the fra-ming A, adjoining the finger-bar D, the back part ofthe divider being provided with a metal point, a* x, to receive the end ofspring E. (See Fig. 1, and dotted lines in Fig. 2.)
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The vibrating clearer C and adj ustingspring E. in combination with the wing B, divider a", and operating-wheel F, said parts being constructed and arranged in relation to each other as and for the purposes set forth.
