, IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 189,730, dated April 17, 1877 application filed February 15, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDMUND L. HANCOCK, of Cadiz, in the'county of Trigg and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in washing-machines; and it consists in the arrangement and combination of parts, that will be more fully described hereinafter, whereby a simple, cheap, and effective machine is produced that will thoroughly cleanse the clothes without injuring them.

The accompanying drawings represent my invention.

a represents a frame, of any suitable construction, upon the top of which is journaled the cranked shaft 0, that has the two balancewheels d and pinion e secured to it. Meshing with the pinion c is the driving-wheel g, which is operated by means of the crank it. Fastened to the crank f, on the shaft 0, is the connecting-rod j, which has its outer end pivoted on top of the washer or rubber Z. This rubber consists of a piece of board, of suitable size and shape, which has a cleat, a, secured across the under side of each end. Extending from cleat to cleat are the two parallel rods 0, on which are placed the movable pieces 1, the front one of which is attached to a chain or cord, 2, which chain or cord passes up through a slot in the board l, and is fastened to a pivoted lever, 3. On the top of the board I is a ratchet-bar, 4, in which the lever is caught and held. By adjusting this lever on Fig. 3 is an inverted view of the the bar the pieces 1 can be left free to move back and forth, or can be all clamped together at the inner end of the washer. These pieces are left free to slide back and forth when garments are being placed in the box 5 to be washed; but while the washer is rubbing back and forth over the clothes that are placed 'on the ribbed bottom 6' of the box they are held clamped together. To the rear end of the washer is fastened one end of a chain, 7, which has its other end fastened to the connecting-rod j, so as to keep it in a proper position as it is being moved back and forth. By unfastening this chain the washer can be turned upside down, and thus be readily washed should it need it, and be taken out of the way in putting the garments in the box to be washed. In the side of the frame next to the box are placed the two uprights 8, which serve as guides to the connecting-rod, and through which uprights are made a series of holes, into which pins are placed for the purpose of holding the washer up out of the way when not needed.

The box 5 has its bottom made like a washboard, and is intended, when not needed, to be pushed back under the frame at out of the way. When in use it is held in position by means of the hooks 9 on the side of the frame.

Having thus described my invention, I claim-- 1. The washer l, pivoted to the end of the rod j, and provided with the rods 0 and sliding pieces 1, substantially as shown.

2. The combination of the washer 1, rod j, chain or cord 2, lever 3, and ratchet 4, guiderods 0, and sliding pieces 1, substantially as described.

3. The combination of the frame a, and operating mechanism, as described, the washer l, chain 2, lever 3, ratchet 4, guide-rods 0, and sliding pieces 1. chain 7, and the box 5 6, all arranged for operation substantially as described.
