Description

Jan. 31, 1933. RUT|sHAU5ER 1,895,687
PROCESS OF AND DEVICE FOR MANUFACTURING HOLLOW BODIES BY MEANS OF FIBROUS MATERIALS Filed May 16, 1931 Patented Jan. 31, 1933 UNITEDTSTA'ITIEIS,
rnoonss or AND nEvroE 7 non "AR OLD RUTIsHAUsE or ZURICH, MSWITZERLAND Application flied may 16, 1931, Serial u 537,894, and in Germany May 27, 1930. I
Heretofore processes of manufacturing hollow bodies, such as bottles and other containers, by means of fibrous materialshave been known. According' to these processes the fibrous material in suspension in a liquid is introduced into a completely closed pervious mould in'such a way that said material will be discharged from the mould through a tube within and near the bottom of the 10 latter. In this operation the'walls of the mould will be charged with fibrous material from the bottom tothe top. Another process heretofore known has for its object to use a receptacle arranged above the mould and serving to'increase the pressure ofthe liquid,
the formation of the hollow bodies being ef-" fected from top to bottom. U According to these known processes the hollow'bodies are first moulded, whereupon gaseous compressed fluid is forced into the mould for the purpose of finishing the moulding and drying the hollow body.
The processes above mentioned are objectionable in that they are applicable only for 125 the manufacture of hollow bodies of relatively little height, because the local position of the entrance of fibrous material invariable in height and the static pressure decreasing with the height enable a homogeneous de- 130 posit of fibrous material of uniform thickness to be obtained withi'n'certain narrow limits only. 7
An apparatus is also known for the manufacture of pipes of fibrous material which 735 usesa mould with a stationary position and a movable part in connection with a core, which determines the bore of the pipe and which remains in the pipe for drying. The movable part of the mould is under pressure of weights 40 which are of influence only upon the density of the deposit, but not upon the height of the zone of deposit.
My present process permits of avoiding the objections mentioned and manufacturing hollow bodies of unlimited length by the fact A further featureof the present process con-i sists in using, simultaneously with the forma-' tion of the walls, a gaseous compressed fluid I for finishingand drying the moulded article.
A device for carrying the process according to my invention into effect is illustrated by wayof example in theaccompanying drawf ing, wherein Fig; l is a verticalsectional view of the device showing the operationthereof during the formation of a hollow'body. I
Fig. 2 is a vertical's'ectional View ofthe device after the completion of'the moulding operation. a i
Fig.- 3 is a transverse section on line I-J, showing the unfoldable mould. v Referring to the'drawing, a1 is a pipe; through which fibrous material in suspensionin liquid is forced under pressure intoa receptacle' a2 provided with a water-gauge a3 and from which leads a pipe a5 providedwitha valve a4. V
61 is apipe for gaseous compressed fluid, comprising telescoping sections 62 and b3. 02 is a branch pipe leading from the gaseous" fluid pipe bl and provided witha valve 01. i (Z1 is the completelyclosed pervious mould,
which is adapted to-be unfolded for the purpose of enabling the hollow body to be taken from the mould after the moulding-thereof. d2 is a piston madeof the cross section-of the mould all and rigidly connecte'dto a stationary supporting pipe d3.
Alifting device'e, such asa Windlass orlthe like, is provided for moving the 'mould-ver-f ticallyf The edges of the mould are provided with hinges d1,-enabl-ing the mould togbe unfolded as shown in F ig. 3. The wall s'o'f the mould are provided with e'xtension'sd"-1,- which upon folding the mould are brought MANUFACTURING HOLLOW BODIES Bi EANS ori FIBBOIIS MATERIALS and held together by means of suitable fasten For the manufacture of a hollowbody I I proce'ed as'follows; Fibrous material in' sus 3 pension in a liquid is continuouslyintro duced under pressureinto the" receptacle -a2,
said material flowing 'through the pipes a5 and d3'into" themould jdl. l During the formation of the hollow body thelevel of liquid in the mould will-be held 'on a de terminate height N with relation to the pistond2 by adjusting the supply of liquid.
The level N of-the liquid which corresponds to the zone of deposit of fibrous material may be determined experimentally'for a hollow body of determinate cross-section. During the moulding process Compressed gaseous fluid, for lnstance compressed air, steam or the like, is introduced through the pipe 61 for the purpose of acting from inside on the moulded part of the hollow body. vOwing t0.
, the fact'that the'compressed fluid is. also in communication with the receptacle a2 the level of the liquid will remain invariable in proportion asliquid is, supplied through the pipe all according to the progressive lifting of: the mould d1] Byadjusting the lifting {speed ofthe mould' lgam enabled to adjust the rthickness and. density of .the deposit;
I I moulded article are such that the gas, in-spite formed,-lthat-is the walls of the, hollow body.
In the uppermost position the moulding of the hollow; body will be complete." Towards its upper end said hollow body will be dried to an; increased degree. In order to quickly ous fluid through the pipes 02 and d3 into the lower: part of the mould dl, provided that'the pressure of gas and the perviousness of the of' 'the direct communication through b1,
b2 and 63, will force the liquid contained, in
the pipes 02, a5, and 0Z3'into the mould. all.
For the purpose of removing the hollow body from the mould the latter will be unfolded as SEQWninFig. 3, whereupon thev mould is moved back to its lower-most. position and zthe-roperation repeated as, described. llhe length of the hollow body to be. manufactimed-will be obtained as desired by limiting theyliftingstroke of the mould For thepu-rpose; of facilitating the removal of the hollow body'from the, mould, the latter may;
, be arranged alsoin a position diflerent from theYQrfical position.
