This invention relates to glare shields for automobiles and epecially to an improved adjustable glare shield bracket.
One object of this invention is to simpli- 5 fy and improve devices of the character described and claimed in my Patent No.
Another object is to provide a very simple and practical glare shield bracket which is 19 very quickly and easily adjusted upward,
downward, rightward, and leftward into various positions, according to the various locations of the eyes of persons who may be using the device, and for moving the glare shield out of the way when its use is not needed.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character with a main adjusting connection or coupling which is 2 angularly movable in every horizontal and vertical direction and which permits the glare shield to be moved vertically with respect to the main coupling.
Other objects and important features are pointed out and implied in the following details of description, in connection with the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation showing the wind shield adjusted to a position toward the extreme left.
Figure 2 is a View similar to Figure 1 but showing the device adjusted to a position toward the extreme right.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figures 1 and 2 but showing the bracket adjusted to its intermediate position, while the glare shield is adjusted to a point near its lowermost position.
Figure 1 is an enlarged view of the main connection or coupling detached from the other elements of the device.
In Figures 1 and 2, a part of the glare shield is broken off.
Referring to this drawing in detail in which similar reference characters correspond to similar parts in the several views, and in which a part of a wind shield frame is indicated at W, the invention is now described as follows:
An angular plate or attaching member 5 is provided with a horizontal flange 6 which is apertured at 7 for receiving the'upper end portion of a supporting arm 8 which is screw threaded at 9 and provided with a nut 10 and with a nut or collar 11, the latter being united with the arm 8 and seated on the top of flange 6. A compression spring 12 is seated between the flange 6 and nut 10 so as to combine therewith for constituting a spring pressed connecrod 15 which constitutes an element of a clamp which holds the glare shield 16. The other elements of the clamp are similar to those shown and described in my previous patent, above referred to, except that I may provide a spring 17 for yieldingly pressing one of the clamping jaws against the glare shield, thus preventing the latter from working loose and from rattling.
The supporting arm 8 has a horizontal part 8a which extends through the opening 13a and is provided with a collar 8?) which bears against one side of the block or solid body 13 while a compression spring 18 bears against the other side of the block 13, being held thereagainst by a nut 19 on the threaded end 8a of the supporting arm. The parts 8a, 8b, 18 and 19 constitute spring pressed means to frictionally engage with the block 13 for holding it in an infinite number of adjusted positions, so that the glare shield can be turned upward into a horizontal position, and still further upward to a higher vertical position and out of range of vision of the driver: of an automobile, through the wind shield ofthe automobile. This adjustment can be made by proper and suificient pressure of the hand of the user, without taking time to-loosen and tighten any screw; butwhen itis desired to vertically adjust the rod 15 withoutmoving the blocks 18, the screw 14 can be loosened, the
rod 15 moved upward or downward to the desired extent, and the screw 14 can then be tightened for securing the rod 15 in its adjusted position. The loosening of the screw 14; also permits the rod 15 to be turned in the opening 135, and this is important, for in swinging arm 8 from the positions shown in Figures 1 and 2 to the central position, the glare shield would present one end to the vision of the person behind it, so it is then necessary to loosen the screw 1 1 to turn the glare shield 16 to the position shown in Figure 3, and then to tighten the screw 14; and the same is true when the glare shield is turned to any location between the rightward and leftward positions shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Although I have described this simple embodiment of my invention quite specifically, I do not intend to limit my patent protection to these exact details of construction and arrangement, for numerous changes may be made within the scope of the inventive ideas as implied and claimed.
WVhat I claim as my invention is:
1. In an adjustable glare shield bracket, the combination of a solid body having a hole through one end portion, said body having a second hole through its opposite end portion and crossing the first said hole substantially at right angles, said body having a screw-hole in open communication with said second hole, a glare shield clamp including a rod which extends through said second hole and is rotatably and longitudinally adjustable therein for movement up and down, a set-screw operable in said screw-hole for holding said clamp in various adjustments relative to said body, and a supporting arm extending through the first said hole and provided with spring-pressed means to frictionally engage said body for yieldingly holding the latter in different adjustments while permitting such adjustments to be made by proper application of sufficient pressure, attaching means to be secured on a frame of a wind-shield, and spring-pressed means connecting said attaching means to said supporting arm for holding the latter in different adjustments while permitting it to be angularly adjusted for effecting movement of the glare shield from right to left and vice versa.
2. In an adjustable glare shield bracket, the combination of a solid body having a hole through one end portion, said body having a second hole through its opposite end portion and crossing the first said hole, said body having a third hole in open communication with said second hole, a. glare shield clamp including a rod which extends through said second hole and is rotatably and longitudinally adjustable therein for movement up and down, means in said third hole for holding said clamp in various adjustments relative to said body, and a supporting arm extending through the first said hole and provided with means to frictionally engage said body for yieldingly holding the latter in different adjustments while permitting such adjustments to be made by proper application of sufiicient pressure, attaching means to be secured on a frame of a wind shield, and spring pressed clamping means connecting said attaching means to said supporting arm for holding the latter in different adjustments while permitting it to be angularly adjusted for effecting movement of the glare shield from right to left and vice versa.
