This invention relates to rock drills but more particularly to water connections for rock drills.
The objects of this invention are to enable the construction of a water tube connection which shall be simple and economical to construct and a water tube connection which shall be leak-proof and which will prevent tangling and kinking of the water hose as the rock drill is moved from one position to another by the operator.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The objects mentioned above are obtained by the mechanism shown in the accompanying drawin which is a longitudinal view of a rock dr1ll partly in section.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 10 designates a rock drill the operation and construction of which need not be described since it forms no part of the invention. The rock drill comprises a cylinder 12 a back head 14 and a front head 16. Situated in the front head in the usual position is a hollow drill steel or working implement 18. A hammer piston delivers blows of impact to the drill steel 18 through the medium of an anvil block 22. As is well known in the art, it is necessary in some drilling operations to wash away the rock dust and pulverized rock which are formed in the drill hole. This cleansing process is accomplished in a variety of ways but chiefly by forcing water through a hollow drill steel. In the present case a water tube 24 leads from the back head 14 through the rock drill passing through apertures 26, 28 and 30 in a piston 20, the anvil block 22 and the drill steel 18 respectively. Water passing through the tube 24 is delivered to the hollow 80 in the drill steel 18 under sufficient ressure to force out the rock cuttings.
In order to lead water into the water tube 24 the back head 14 is provided with the following construction:
An aperture 32 is formed in the back head and a portion of the aperture 32 is threaded as shown at 34. A nut 36 having an extension 38 and a bore or an aperture 40 is provided with threads 42 on the extension 38.
The threads 42 are adapted to cooperate with the threaded portion 34 of the recess 32.
A connection or plug 44 having a bore 46 fits slidably into the aperture 40 and has a shoulder 47 which seats against the outer end of the nut 36. A shoulder 48 is formed in the bore 46 by reducing the size of the bore as shown at 50. The upper end of the bore 46 is provided with threads 52 which are adapted to engage a threaded extension 54 on a plug 56. An extension 58 protrudes from the plug 44 at an angle of substantially 90. A supply passage 60 is formed in the extension 58 and opens into the bore 46 at a point intermediate the ends of said bore. The extension 58 is threaded as at 62 to receive a hose coupling.
A cylindrical extension 64 on the plug 56 fits slidably in the bore 46 of the plug 44.
The assembly and operation of the device is as follows:
The plug 44 is inserted in the bore 40 of the nut 36. A collar 66 is placed over a reduced end 68 of the plug 44 and the plug 44 is peened over as shown at 70. The collar 66 be freely rotatable on the plug 44 and seats against the front or inner end of the nut 36. The plug 44 is thus free to rotate within the nut 36 but is firmly secured against withdrawal. The next operation is to thread the nut 36 into the threads 34. Packing 72 is placed in the recess 46 upon the shoulder 48 and the water tube 24 inserted through the packing and the cylinder into the drill steel 18. The plug-nut 56 is then screwed into place to compress the packing about the rear end of the tubeto hold the water tube 24 and the packing 72 firmly in place. Water enters passage 60 from a source of supply (not shown) and flows through passages 74 and 7 6 to the water tube 24 and thence to the drilled hole. The method of construction and assembly described above makes a water tight connection, in a simple manner and permits swivelling of the hose connection 62 about the axis of the drill 10. Thus among others the objects hereinbefore mentioned are accomplished.
I claim:
In a fluid actuated rock drill, the combination of a cylinder, :1 back head for the cylinder having a threaded recess, a hollow nut e threaded into the recess, a connection freely rotatable in the nut and having a bore, :1 lateral extension on the connection having a supply psssage oning into the bore at a point intermediate t e ends of the bore, shoulders 0n the connection seating against the ends of the nut, a shoulder in the bore, a, water tube in the connection, packing material seated upon the last mentioned shoulder and encircling the water tube, a plug in the bore to compress the packing material, and a passa 'e in the plug to convey Water from the supp y passage to the tube.
