A TTORNEY5 Patented Jan. 10, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE i MILFORD T. VANDERVOORT, OF GRAND RAEIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOB TO AMERICAN SEATING COMPANY, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY COMBINED TYPE-WRITER STAND AND DESK Application filed May 14,
The present invention relates to desks and more particularly to a combined typewriter stand and desk.
The main objects of the invention are to provide a structure which serves as a combined typewriter stand and desk; to provide a typewriter stand having a desk top forming a cover for the typewriter stand; to provide a combined typewriter stand and desk cover which may be lifted and swung upwardly and rearwardly when it is desired to use the typewriter; and, to provide a device of the character above outlined having a supporting rack for a stenographers note-book or the like.
An illustrative embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view showing the roller bearings and their cammed grooved trackways whereby the top may be tilted upwardly and rearwardly;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view of a portion of the structure shown in Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view showing the desk top raised and swung rearwardly until a vertical position is assumed, the dotted lines indicating the travel of the desk cover;
Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 55 of Figure 1;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of the desk top or cover swung rearwardly and upwardly, showing the supporting rack in position for use;
Figure 7 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the desk top or cover swung rearwardly and upwardly, showing the supporting rack in a position for use;
Figure 8 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on lme 88 of Figure 6; and
Figure 9 1s a fragmentary perspective vlew of the desk top or cover swung to open position and showing the supporting rack opened for use.
Referring to the drawings in which like numerals designate the same parts in the sev- 1931. Serial No. 537,264.
eral views, a tubular pedestal 1, has an annular flange 2 for supporting the combined typewriter stand 3 and desk top or cover, generally designated 4.
The'typewriter stand is provided with a back member 5 which is secured thereto by means of oppositely disposed brackets 6 and screws 7 and each bracket is provided with a pair of spaced laterally-projecting freclyrotatable rollers 8 which are secured to each bracket.
The desk top has an inclined portion 9, a depending front member 10 and side members 11 forming a cover for the typewriter stand and each depending side member is provided with a pair of non-parallel or cammed grooved trackways 12, '13 in which the rollers travel when the cover is raised or lowered as hereinafter described. The trackways are so formed that the desk top or cover is caused to be tilted upwardly and rearwardly on the rollers over which the cover travels. The top thus assumes the position best shown in Figure 4 whereupon the typewriter is available foruse or when lowered as shown in Figure 1, the cover becomes available as a desk. v V i The depending front 10 is provided with a medial portion 14 which is rotatable on the pivot pins 15, thereby forming a supporting rack for a stenographers note book. A spring metal clip 16 secured tothe medial port on in any suitable manner as by the screw 17 provides means for retaining a. note book and the rack is likewise provided with a ledge or shelf 18 for holding pencils or the like. Spring tensioned buttons 19 on opposite sides of the medial portion 14 are adapted to be sprung into wells 20 in the front member 10 to provide means for looking the medial portion to the front member 10 when the cover is lowered to form a desk top.
Rubber feet 21 retained by metal straps 22 secured to each of the depending side members 11 as by screws 23 provide stops for the desk top or cover when it is in lowered position as shown in Figure 1.
It will thus be seen that the structure shown in Figure 1 can be tilted upwardly and rearwardly on the rollers to the position shown in Figure 4 and that the cammed grooved trackways are so formed and positioned with respect to each other that the desk top is caused to assume the several positions shown in dotted lines in Figure 4 during its travel to open or closed positions. lVhen the cover is in open position making the typewriter available for use, the pivota ly mounted medial front portion may be revolved to the position best shown in Figure 9 to form a supporting rack for a stenographers note book and the ledge for supporting pencils or the like.
WVhile but one specific embodiment of this invention has been herein shown and described, it will be understood that numerous details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of this invention as defined by the following claims.
I claim:
1. In a structure of the character described, 21 stand having a pair of laterally projecting spaced rollers on opposite sides thereof, a desk top forming a cover for said stand and having oppositely disposed depending sides each provided with a pair of grooved trackways in which said rollers are adapted to travel, each pair of trackways being so formed that said top is movably tiltable on said rollers upwardly and rearwardly.
2. In a structure of the character described, a stand having a pair of laterally projecting spaced rollers on opposite sides thereof, a desk top forming a cover for said stand and having oppositely disposed depending sides each provided with a pair of grooved trackways in which said rollers are adapted to travel, each pair of trackways being non-parallel but so formed that said top is movably tiltable on said rollers upwardly and rearwardly.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand at Grand Rapids, Michigan, this 11th day of May, 1981.
MILFORD T. VANDERVOORT.
