This invention relates broadly, to self propelled vehicles, and has more particular reference to the spark control thereof.
A primary object of this invention is to provide means for retarding the spark simultaneous with the starting of the prime mover of the vehicle.
More particularly, an object of the invention is to provide means operatively connected with the starter button of the vehicle for retarding the spark upon depression of the star er button.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during a study of the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings where- 1n:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the spark control, the same being illustrated as applied.
Figure 2 is a sectional elevational View of a starter button embodying features of the present invention.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary detail sectional elevational view showing the manner of operatively connecting the spark lever with the spark rod.
Figure 4 is a detail sectional elevational view taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.

As shown, a spark lever 5 is connected at one end as at 6 with the distributor in the usual manner, and at its opposite end, the lever 5 is provided with a longitudinal head 7 slotted as at 8. The spark control rod that is mounted on the steering column R in the usual manner, and is capable of manual manipulation, in a manner well known in the art, is designated by the reference character 9. One end portion of the spark control rod 9 is accommodated in a slot of the head 7, and said end is provided with a ball 10 operable within the head. A spring 11 is disposed within the head 7 and one end of the spring bears against the ball 10 for normally maintaining the ball 10 at one end of the head.

7 According to the present invention, a strap 11 formed of metal or suitable material is anshaped head 16 pivoted between opposite portions of the bracket 14 by a pivot pin 17. The free end of the lever is pivoted as at 18 to a link 19. A sleeve 20 is clamped on the spark lever 5 and is held at the desired adjustment through the medium of a set screw as clearly suggested in Figure 1 Sleeve 20 has an arm projecting therefrom and pivoted to the link 19 as at 21. A second lever 22 is pivoted as at 23 between opposite portions of the bracket 14 and one end of the lever 22 terminates in a fork 2 1 engageable in a groove 25 provided exteriorly of a cylinder 26. Cylinder 26 is slidably engaged with the stem 27 of the starter switch designated generally by. the reference character S. Cylinder 26 is normally urged upwardly with respect to stem 27 through the medium of a coil spring 28. (See Figu're 2.) Extending upwardly from theupper closed end of cylinder26 is a rod 29 which 85 is adapted to support the foot pedal (not shown) of the starter switch.
When the parts are in the positions shown in Figures 1 and 2, it will be apparent that the starter switch is open, and upon depression of rod 29 for closing the switch S" of the starting mechanism, it will be apparent that upon downward movement of cylinder- 26, lever 22 will be rocked about its pivot so that the cam-shaped head 22a of the lever will be moved into engagement with the dog like pivoted end 16 of lever 15 thus rocking the lever 15. Movement of lever 15 will be transmitted through the medium of link 19 and sleeve 20 to the spark lever 5 for mov- 10 ing the spark lever in the direction of the arrow in Figure 1 to retard the spark.
As soon as the motor is started, and pressure is released from rod 29, the parts will return to their normal position and the spark will be again advanced, it being understood, of course, that the spark is normally advanced, the retarding of the spark being only momentarily and at the time of start-- ing the vehicle. I
From the foregoing then it will be seen" that I have devised a device that may be readily applied, and which will insure the retarding of the spark upon depression of the starter button. It may be also stated, that the spark lever 9 being held in its advanced position through the usual mechanism not shown, the moving of the spark lever 5 will be effected without causing a dis-- placement of the spark lever 9 from its advanced position.
Even though I have herein shown and described the preferredembodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the same control mechanism to move the latter to spark retarding position when said plunger is depressed for closing the startingmotor switch and including a lever operatively engaging said plunger and pivoted adjacent thereto, and also having a cam shaped head, a second lever pivoted adjacent the first named lever and also having a cam shaped head arranged to be engaged by the said head of the first mentioned lever whereby the second lever is rotated when the said switch plunger is depressed, and means operatively interconnecting the second named lever with said spark control mechanism.

The combination with the spark control mechanism and the plungerof the starting motor switch of an internal combustion engine; of means operatively connecting the starting motor switch plunger with the spark control mechanism to move the latter to spark retarding position when said plunger is depressed for closing the starting motor switch and includingachannel shaped bracket, a lever pivotally mounted on the bracket, hand actuated means for retarding said spark control mechanism including a spring-retracted rod; means operatively connecting said lever with said rod, a second lever pivotally mounted on said bracket and means operatively inter-connecting the second lever with the starting motor switch plunger; an inter-en- MACK ALLEN BEATTY.
