contradistinction to the two operations here'- tofore required. 7 p v T Various'types of washer and string attaching machines have heretofore been employed to' attach the washers and/ or the. strings to the flaps and bodies of envelopes, and such machines have been characterized by at least one difficulty in that the same have been single acting and adapted to apply but one washer at a time, so that it has been necessary for the operator to feed the-blank envelope to the machine twice, or once each to two different machines. This method has been wasteful of time and has resulted in increasing the cost of envelope production. In accordance with the primary purpose of the present invention as above stated it is a further object of the invention to provide a washer and string attaching machinewhich will operate simultaneously upon two different portions of the envelope. the operations taking place in opposite directions,

The supplementary'frame25.is provided with upper and lower. forwardly extending lugs 30 and 31 respectively. A plunger 32 is mounted to reciprocate ina vertical direction in these lugs 30 and 31. This plunger 32 is provided with an anvil portion .33 which is adapted to cooperate with a riveting'die 34 mounted on the underside of the nosepiece 23,for use in applying a washerto. the un-" derside of the envelope body.

"To feed the required washers in an upward direction, and to present-the same'in position to be picked up by the pin 46' after the pin 46 haspicke'd up one of the eyelets 41, I provide-in this instance an upwardly inclined cylinder or reservoir 47 suitably mounted on a bracket 48 secured to the front end of the lug portion 30, as for instanceby means of bolts or screws 49. This cylinder or reservoir 47 is adapted to contain a stack of-washers 50,
the washers being of the conventional type, having a central hole by which the washers may be guided upon a rod 51 which extends part way into the stack 50 and has a lower end portion 52 removably secured, as by means of a pivoted latch device 53, to a bracket 54 secured to the supplementary frame portion 25. To constantly urge the stack 50 upwardly the rod 51 is provided with a U-shaped pusher 55 adapted to be drawn upwardly by means of a cord 56 which passes around the pulley 57, thence through a guiding eye 58 formed on a rod 59 suitably mounted on the supplementary frame 25, the cord 56 having a weight 60 at its lower end. One side of the cylinder 47 may be slotted if desired so that the pusher 55 may enter the cylinder if desired to increase the capacity of the stack 50.
The cylinder or reservoir 47 has, at the top of the stack 50, a slide device 61 by which the washers are successively moved from the stack 50 to the axial plane of the riveting die. This slide device 61 has an undercut portion 62 which is adapted to receive the top washer 63 of the stack 50, as seen in Fig. 6, when the slide 61 is in its outermost position. When the slide 61 is moved inwardly the washer 63 is pushed between a pair of receiving jaws 64 and 65, these jaws 64 and 65 being pivotally mounted, as seen at 66 and 67 respectively upon the upper ends of the leg portions 35 and 36. The jaws 64 and 65 are normally held in their closing position by means of a tension spring 68 mounted on pins 69 and 70. The jaws 64 and 65 have complementary recessed portions 71 to receive the washer 63 deposited therein by the slide 61, as seen in Fig. 5.
The slide 61 having been withdrawn, and the washer 63 being in position within the jaws 64 and 65, and the chute 42 being in position to present an eyelet beneath the washer 63, an upward movement of the plunger 32 causes the pin 46 to enter the axial hole in the eyelet 72 picking up the eyelet 72, forcing the neck portion of the eyelet through the hole in the washer 63 and moving the assembly upward to the riveting die 34 whereupon the riveting of the washer is completed by engagement of the anvil 33 with the riveting die, it being understood that during this movement the pin 46 will recede within the plunger 32, against the force of he spring 73.
As the plunger 32 moves upward, during the riveting operation, the inclined wall of the anvil 33 will spread the jaws 64 and 65 apart. At the same time, means are pro vided to remove the rivet chute 42 from the path of the plunger 32 which means will he presently described. However, it may be noted that the delivery end of the chute 42 is provided with a spring held latch device 74, which enables the end of the chute 42 to be swung past the pin 46 before the anvil 33 reaches thedelivery plane of the chute.
To operate the upwardly acting plunger 32 and the downwardly actingplunger 16 simultaneously for the operations hereinabove described I provide in this instance a system of linked rods connected to a. common driving means. In this instance the driving means (not shown), includes a suitable disc 7 5 mounted on a shaft journaled on the base 10, as indicated at 76, this disc '75 having an upwardly extending rod 77 eccentrically connected thereto as indicated at 78, this rod 77 being pivotally connected,v as seen at 79, to a lever 80 pivotally mounted .at 81 upon the upper frame 12, and having a forked slotted portion 82 to engage the ends of a pin 83 which passes through the plunger 16. To conjointly operate the plunger 32 with the plunger 16, I provide a lever 84, pivotally mounted at 85 on the base 10, and having one end operatively connected to the disc 75 by means of a slot in which the eccentrically mounted pin 78 is disposed. A second lever 86 pivotally mounted on the'supplementary frame 25 as indicated at 87, has its outer end connected to. the plunger 32 by means of a slotted forked portion 88 and pin 89 similar to the portion 82 and pin 83 of the plunger 16. The inner end of the lever 86 and the free end of the lever 84 are connected by means of a link 90 pivoted to the levers 86 and 84 as indicated at 91 and 92 respectively. Thus, as will be seen, rotation of the disc 75 will simultaneously effect downward movement of 'the plunger 16 and upward movement of the plunger 32.
To adjust the travel of the plunger 32 in accordance with variations in the adjustment of the supplementary frame portion 25 and arm 21, for different sized envelopes or different positions of the washers, the link member 90 may be formed in two parts, with slotted portions 93 adapted to receive a bolt 94- whereby to lengthen or shorten the link 90.
To simultaneously operate the eyelet chute 42 and washer presenting slide 61, I provide in this instance means operating in conjunction with the plunger 32 whereby to simultaneously present an eyelet and washer in delivery position above the pin 46 during movement of the plunger in a downward direction, after having completed one riveting operation, and to simultaneously remove the slide 61 and chute 42 from the path of the plunger as the plunger moves in an upward direction to pickup the deposited eyelet and washer and to perform the suceeding riveting operation. For this purpose an upwardly extending arm 95 is bolted to one side of the lug portion 31 as indicated at 96} The arm 95 has a double faced cam 97 pivotally mounted at its upper end as indicated at 98. The lower surface 99 of the cam 97 rests upon a roller 100 mounted on a right angular bracket 101 the horizontal portion of which is rigidly secured to the plunger 32. as indicated at 102, and the upper end of the vertical portion of which is provided with an inclined cam surface 103 adapted to engage a roller 104 provided at the underside of the chute 42. A bell crank lever 105 is pivot-ally mounted on the supplementary frame portion 25 as indicated at 106, the end of one of the arms having a roller to rest upon the upper cam surface 108 of the cam 97, and the end of the opposite arm of the bell crank lever 105 being connected to the slide device 61 by means of a pin and slotconnection indicated at 109. The bell crank lever 105 is normally urged in a direction to move the slide 61 inwardly to'the delivery position, by means of a suitable tension spring 110 effective between the bell crank and the supplementary frame por-' tion 25.
Means are also provided to adjust the po sition of the die 34 which is carried by the nosepiece 23, when the supplementary frame portion is moved toward or away from the arm 21. For this purpose the nosepiece is provided with a slot 111 whichis adapted to receive bolts or screws 112 extending into the top of the die 34. Thus the riveting die 34 may be properly aligned with the pin 46.
The reservoir or receptacle 47 is provided with a removable cover plate 113 which serves to guide the slide 61 in its reciprocatory washer delivery movements. The upper part of the cylinder 47 is also provided with an ex- 65 tension 114 having a cut out portion 115 to guide the shank 116 of the slide 61 in its movements so that the washer 63 will be presented in proper position to register with the pin 46 and eyelet 72.
ml In the operation of the apparatus, the parts are normally in the position shown in Fig. 1. An envelope 20 having been sleeved over the nosepiece 23, with its flap portion over the downwardly acting riveting die po- Ti sitioned at the point indicated at 18, and the underside of the body of the envelope positioned beneath the riveting die 34, suitable means, such for instance as foot pedal mechanism or the like, are operated to rotate the disc 75, this movement of the disc producing downward movement of the plunger 16 and upward movement of the plunger 32. The plunger 2, during its upward movement, will first pick up the eyelet 72 and will present the eyelet 72 to the hole in the washer 63.
At the same time the right. angular bracket member 101 will move upwardly with the plunger 32, which will cause the cam surface 103 to become effective upon the roller'104 to draw the chute 42 downward, snapping the latch device 74 over the pin 46, and permitting the upper end of the plunger 32 to pass the end of the chute 42. Simultaneously with this movement, the roller 100 on the horizon- 65!? tal portion of the bracket arm 101 will move the cam 97 upwardly to actuate the bell crank lever 105, thus withdrawing the slide 61 from the path of the plunger 32, it beingunderstood that the washer 63 is now positioned between the jaws 64 and 65. The plunger 32 now moves upward, spreading the jaws-.64 and 65 apart and carrying the eyelet and washer upward toward the-riveting die 34 which is disposed within the envelope. The anvil portion 33 of the plunger 32 now becomes effective to secure the eyelet and washer-to the outer portion of the underside of the envelope. The parts now reverse their movement, and the early part of the downwardmovement of the plunger 32, as illustrated in Fig. 2, releases the chute 42 and bell crank lever 105 from the camsurface 103 and cam 97 respectively, and the bell crank lever 105 is operated by means of the spring 110 to actuate theslide 61 to present a succeeding washer to the path of the plunger while the spring moves the chute 42 upwardly to present the delivery end of the chute, con
taining a succeeding eyelet, also in the path of the plunger, whereupon the parts are in position for the performance of a second riveting operation.
l/Vhen the stack of washers has, become a base and eyelet and washer applying means mounted on said base and provided with an actuating element for said means, of a frame secured to the base and having, a nosepiece disposed in the plane of said applying means but spaced from the latter, eyelet and washer applying means carried by said frame, and actuating means for the last said means operatively connected with said actuating ele ment, saidframe being relatively adjustable to vary the spacing of its washer and eyelet applying means with reference to the Washer and eyelet applying means of the machine.

In combination with a machine having a base and eyelet and washer applying means mounted on said base and provided with an actuating element for said means, of a frame secured'to the-base and having a nosepieice disposed in the plane of said applying-means but spaced from the latter, eyelet and washer applying means carried by said frame, and actuating means for the last said means operatively connected with said actuating ele- Inent, the washer and eyelet applying means mounted on said frame comprising a reciprocally mounted plunger, a lever rockably mounted on said frame and having a slot and pin connection with said plunger, a second lever rockably mounted on said base and operatively connected with said actuatingelement, and a link connection between said levers provided with means permitting its adjustment as to length to vary the zone of movement of said plunger.

In combination with a machine having a base and eyelet and washer applying means mounted on said base and provided with an actuating element for said means, of a frame secured to the base and having a nosepiece disposed in the plane of said applying means but spaced from the latter, eyelet and washer applying means carried by said frame, and actuating means for the last said means operatively connected with said actuating element, the washer and eyelet applying means mounted on said frame comprising a reciprocally mounted plunger, a lever rockably mounted on said frame and having a slot and pin connection with said plunger, a second lever rockably mounted on said base and op eratively connected with said actuating element, and a link connection between said levers provided with means permitting its adjustment as to length, said frame being relatively adjustable to change the position of the eyelet and washer applying means with reference to that carried by the machine, the adjustment of said link providing the same zone of movement of said plunger after the adjustment of said frame.

An eyelet and washer applying means for envelopes and the like comprising an upwardly moving plunger and actuating means for raising and lowering the same, a frame in which said plunger is mounted, an upwardly extending arm, an eyelet magazine at the upper extremity of said arm and having a pivotal connection with the arm, an eyelet chute in communication with said magazine and terminating adjacent said plunger, means tending to swing the magazine and chute on the pivotal connection of the former to position the chute over the plunger, an arm carried by the plunger and operatively connected with the chute to withdraw the latter from posi tion over the plunger as the latter is raised, and a washer magazine provided with means for delivering washers singly to the plunger in conjunction with eyelets delivered from said chute, said washer delivering means being operatively connected with said plunger.
5. An eyelet and washer applying means for envelopes and the like comprising an upwardly moving plunger and actuating means for raising and lowering the same, a frame in which said plunger is mounted, an upr wardly extending arm, an eyelet magazine at the upper extremity of said arm and having a pivotal connection with the arm, an eyelet chute in communication with said magazine and terminating adjacent said plunger, means tending to swing the magazine and chute on the pivotal connection of the former to position the chute over the plunger, an arm carried by theplunger and operatively connected with the chute to withdraw the latter'from position over the plunger as the lat ter is raised, and a washer magazine provided I In testimony whereof I hereby aflix my signature.
