This invention relates to improvements in ash receivers, more particularly to tobacco ash receivers adapted to be permanently mounted to a wall or other support in such manner that the receptacle may be tilted to dump its contents.

It is among the objects of the invention to provide an ash receptacle which may be provided with a mounting bracket whereby it becomes permanently attached to a wall or a piece of furniture, and which shall be provided with means to facilitate removal of the contents from the receptacle when it is filled.

My invention is particularly adapted for use in public places such as smoking compartments on trains, air planes, and generally any lounge where ash receptacles may be conveniently located on walls or the backs of seats or on furniture or the like within reach of the smoker.

The features of the invention will become more apparent from a consideration of the accompanying drawing in which like reference characters designate like parts and in which Figure 1 is an elevational view of an ash receptacle embodying the principles of this invention; Figure 2 a side elevational view thereof; Figure 3 a detail view illus trating the bottom portion of the mounting bracket and Fi ure 1 a view diagrammatically illustrating the dumping receptacle.

WVith reference to the several figures of the drawing, 1 designates a wall bracket having integral lugs or projections 2 provided at the bottom thereof. The main body portion of the bracket 1 is provided with a plurality of screw holes 3 whereby the bracket may be firmly attached to a wall or other support.

The bracket is generally of the shape of the receptacle 4: shown in Figures 1 and 2, the face of the bracket and the cooperating face 5 of the receptacle being substantially flat to provide a frictional contact which supports r the receptacle when the latter is mounted in the manner hereinafter described.

The upper portion of the receptacle may be provided with a bead or other ornamental design and the receptacle may be made of any suitable material so long as the bottom portion is provided with attachment means whereby it is mounted in cooperative relation with the bracket 1.

As shown in Figures 1 and2'of the drawing, the bottom of the receptacle is provided with a depending tongue portion 7 which is '55 adapted to cooperate with the projecting lugs 2 of the bracket and the lugs 2 are provided with openings 8 for receiving a hinge pin 8 which is disposed through a slotted opening 9 of the tongue 7 The slot 9, as shown in Figures 2 and 4:, is angularly disposed with respect to the seating face 5 of the receptacle so that when the receptacle rests on the pin 8 by contact of the upper end of the slot 9, it is forced with its face 5 against the bracket 1, it being thus supported in itsupright position by frictional contact of the receptacle with the V bracket and by the offset position of the pin 8 with respect to the center of gravity of the receptacle.

To dump the contents of the receptacle 4, it is lifted bodily until the bottom of the slot 9 engages the p n 8 as shown in Figure 4 of the drawing. This movement draws the receptacle away from the mounting bracket 1 and permits ofgtilting in the manner shown by dotted lines in Figure 4 of the drawing, to freely empty its contents when desired. It is then ti ted to the vertical position and dropped until. the top end of the slot 9 rests on pin 8 in which position the entire face 5 rests against the wall bracket 1 and the receptacle is again suported in its normal position for use. V

By the construction herein described it is not necessary to provide any latch or other retaining means to hold the receptacle in its normal position, since'it is so held by virtue of the construction of the slot 9 and the position of the receptacle on the supporting bracket, this being the primary feature of I the invention.

It is evident that ash receptacles of the '95 type herein described, provide means for keeping the smoking lounge clean, as such receptacles can be provided in adequate numbers and can be very conveniently dumped by merely holding the container underneath T my hand.

Although one embodiment of the invention has been herein illustrated and described, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various modifications may be made in the details of construction without departing from the principles herein set forth.

I claim:

A folding receptacle comprising a wall bracket having a hinge lug projecting at the bottom thereof, a container open at the top having a depending tongue at the bottom thereof and having a fiat side for engagement with said bracket, said lug being provided with a hinge pin, and the tongue of the container being provided with a cam slot cooperating with said pin to hold said container with its flat side against the face of the wall bracket when the top of the slot rests on said pin, and to withdraw said container out of contact with said bracket when it is lifted a distance corresponding to the length of said slot for the purpose of tilting the same.
