The present invention relates to new and improved lubricating and guiding means for spinning machines. More particularly, our invention relates to improved lubricating and guiding means for travelers utilized in well known types of spinning machines for the production of twisted threads used in the manufacture of cloth, fabrics, and the like, and this present application is a continuation inpart of co-pending application, Serial No. 215,872, filed August 27, 1927.
Our present invention accomplishes all of the desirable and improved results and advantages of the mechanism disclosed in said 1 co-pending application, in which the spinning travelers utilized are guided and lubricated in a manner that materially prolongs the life of the travelers and co-operating parts, conserves lubricant, and avoids contact of lubricant with the thread being twisted. Our invention overcomes defects of previous guiding and lubricating means in which the lubricant is applied on the retaining ring for the spinner and ineifectively lubricates the travelers, and results in staining of the thread with lubricant, causing heavy losses in the weaving of light colored cloths due tothe necessity of dyingthe discolored goods in dark colors because of such stains. v
In the operation of the lubricating and guiding means of said co-pending application as well as of the present invention, a small amount of lubricant is supplied to the channel or oil pan member into which the guiding ends of the traveler dip as they fall away from the guide member when the spinning machine is stopped. The guiding ends of the traveler are in this way lubricated in operation of the spinning machine. v
While the improved lubricating and guiding means disclosed in said co-pending application fulfill the objects thereof and effectively overcome the noted objections to prior devices of this character, in operation thereof, as well as in operation of the prior arrangements replaced thereby, the strands of thread being twisted and guided by the travelers are, due to the movement of the traversing bar or rail, under more-0r less tension. This tension in the strands holds the travelers in upward position with the guiding ends thereof in contact with the inner surface of the guide member or traveler retaining ring. he travelers as now used are constructed of relatively light steel wire and are readily yieldable, and in operation of spinning machines with which they are used, the tension on the traveler is frequently suficient to deflect the traveler and its guiding ends to such an extent that the ends of the traveler snap from underneath the retaining guide ring, freeing the traveler from the retaining guide ring and'causing a stoppage of the twisting operation until the traveler is readjusted by. the operator. This results in material reduction of output ofthe spinning machines and materially increased labor costs because of the reduced number of spinners that an operator can keep in efficient working order.
It is accordingly'a primary object of the present invention to provideimproved lubricating and guiding devices for travelers in spinning machines of such nature that the tendency of the. travelers to snap out of operating position during spinning operations due to the'normal tension thereon is substantially eliminated.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved lubricating and guiding means for travelers of spinning machines of such nature that an adequate supply of lubricant is provided, loss of lubricant is prevented, and stains on the twisted threads are minimized.
In the construction of said co-pending application, during operation of the spinning machine, lubricant is supplied to the lubricant receiving channel member or oil pan through the annular guide opening between the inner wall of the pan and the inner edge of the traveler guide and retaining ring, and careless operators. may inadvertently spill lubricant on the traveler and the outer surface of the traveler guide and retaining ring. Threads may contact with this excess lubricant when the tension is relieved, therein upon stopping the machine, resulting in a discoloration of the thread. 7
It is accordingly a further object of our invention to provide means for supplying lubricant to the lubricant receiving pan or well structure in a manner as to eliminate spilling of lubricant on parts where it may cause thread discoloration.
Further objects of our invention are such as will appear from the following'detailed description of a preferred embodiment thereof and as particularly pointed out by the terms of the appended claims.

Referring to the drawing by reference characters, in which like characters designate like parts, 10 designates as a whole our improved guiding and lubricating device for the commonly used travelers in standard types of spinning machines. The guiding and lubricating device 10 comprises a securing member or ring holder ll provided with diametrically opposite slotted securing lugs 12 disposed in the plane of the body portion of the holder, and upwardly projecting equally spaced resilient retaining ring supporting members 13 struck up from the outer perimeter thereof.
Adapted to be supported on the outer surface of the ring holder 11 is a lubricating pan or well 14 which comprises a base portion 15 equal in width to that of the ring holder and upwardly projecting annular inner and outer walls 16 and 17 respectively, the inner wall 16 being substantially higher than the outer wall 1'? for reasons that will more fully hereinafter appear. Adapted to seat on the outer flange 17 of the lubricating pan 14 is a. traveler ring 18 which, as more clearly shown in Figure 2, is inwardly dished or inclined so that the inner edge of the ring is in a plane below that of the outer edge thereof.
The three members above described comprise the improved guiding and lubricating device and are assembled as shown in Figure 2. The lubricating pan or well 14 is placed upon the ring holder 11 positioned within supporting fingers 13 thereof which retain the pan in position, after which the ring 18 is placed on the pan with the outer edge thereof in engagement with the outer pan flange 17 and the inner edge thereof in spaced relation to the inner wall 16 defining an annular tr veler guide opening 19.
In Figures 2 and 7 is shown the application of the improved guiding and lubricating device to a well known form of spinning ma-' rotation from the frame of the machine and are rotated at a high speed by the driving belt 25. Bobbins 26 upon which the twisted thread is to be wound are supported on the spindles and rotated by pulleys 24 at high speed.
Thethreads or strands 27 to be twisted and wound on the bobbins 26 are fed from suitable mechanism (not shown) and are then passed around the corresponding travelers 30 to the bobbins 26 as indicated.
As is well known, in operation of devices of this character, the rotation of the bobbins and the action of the threads 27 causes rotation of the traveler 30 twisting the threads 27 into a single strand which is wound on the bobbins. As the rotation of the bobbins and the winding of the twisted thread proceeds, the traversing bar 21 is reciprocated vertically causing the winding of the twisted thread on the bobbins in uniform manner.
In accordance with our improvement herein disclosed, a small. amount of lubricant is supplied in the pan 1 1, which as shown is disposed beneath the ring 18, the inwardly projecting portions of the travelers extend within the annular opening 19 and the ends thereof in operation engage tie inner surface of the ring 18. As is well known a spinning machine is stopped a number of times a day at which time the travelers fall away from engagement with the under surfaces of the rings and the ends thereof will dip into the lubricant in the pan 14. When the machine is again put into operation the under surfaces of the rings will be lubricated by means of the lubricant carried by the ends of the travelers, while at the same time there is no possibility of any lubricant reaching the thread guiding sections of the travelers or the outer surfaces of the ring.
Thus in accordance with our invention, a small amount of lubricant, in practice about fifteen drops once a month, is supplied to the pan 14 after which the lubrication of the travelers need be given no attention and the usual operations of spinning can proceed without any possible danger of discolorations in the thread due to the lubricant.
As above set forth, and as shown in Figure 3, inner wall 16 of pan 14 is sufficiently higher than its outer wall 17 to provide a cylindrical stop projection with which the elbow portions of traveler 30 at the junction of the opposite vertical end portions with the laterally directed end guiding portions engage when the central thread guiding section of the traveler is bowed upwardly by tension of strands 27 in operation. In the construction of said co-pending application, as well as in the prior constructions, when suficient tension develops to bow the traveler as shown, the ends of the traveler will snap out from underneath the guide ring interruptin the twisting operation.
Accordingly, the provision of the relatively high inner wall 16 of the present invention, traveler 30 is effectively guided and at the same time the guiding ends thereof are positively precluded from moving or snapping out of operative position under the normal higher stresses of operation, under which the travelers of prior arrangement snap out of place. As a result fewer stoppages of twisting occur, higher grade products are secured, the capacity of the machines is increased, and less labor may be utilized to properly attend machines.
The relatively high inner wall 16, while functioning as above set f rth, further functions to more effectively prevent lubricant in the pan from being thrown or worked out of the pan over the inner wall 16, as oil splashed or thrown upward by the spinner which would work over the inner guiding wall of the ring holders of prior constructions, or over the inner wall of the pan of said co-pending application, collects on the inner face of wall 16 and drains back into the pan.
The improved construction according to the present application further comprises means for supplying lubricant to the pan l i externally thereof during operation of the spinning machine in a manner that precludes spilling of lubricant on the upper surface of ring 18 with which the thread may contact on the cross bar of the traveler. a. his construction preferably comprises a small spout 31 secured to or formed integrally with the outer wall 17 of pan 14 as indicated in Figures 1 and 5.
By the provision of the spout as disclosed, lubricant can be supplied to the pan l4: during operation of the spinning mechanism from the outside of the rail without any liability of dropping lubricant on ring 18 or any other place with which threads 27 may contact when the machine stops and the travelers 30 drop downward.
In Figures 8 and 9 is disclosed a modified embodiment of our persent invention in the form of an attachment to the form of invention shown in said co-pending application.
As indicated in Figure 8 the oil pan 14 which is similar to the pan in the said copending application, comprises a bottom 15 and inner and outer walls 16 and 17 respectively, in which inner wall 16 is relatively shallow, as disclosed. Our improved attachment comprises a sleeve or cylinder 32, of a diameter to removably telescope within wall 16 providing a sufficient vertical extension of the wall 16 to hold the traveler in position under the stresses of operation as well as to prevent loss of lubricant over the wall. The upper edge of sleeve 32 is preferably provided with a bead 33 for more effectively retaining the traveler 30 in position as well as more effectively preventing passage of lubricant from the pan 14 into contact with the threads.
If desired, the wall 16 may be provided with a bead and the ring 32 may, if desired, be provided with a plain outer edge by the omission of the head 33.
The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential characteristics thereof. The present embodiment is therefore to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather than by the foregoing description, and all changes which come within the meaning and 1 range of equivalency of the claims are therefore intended to be embraced therein.
What we claim and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is 1. A guiding and lubricating device for the travelers of spinning machines comprising an annular lubricant-receiving pan structure having inner and outer walls; a traveler guide ring disposed over said pan structure: an annular opening between said guide and said inner wall; and a sleeve in detachable telescoping engagement with said inner wall, said sleeve being of SllfllClGIlt height above said guide ring to retain the traveler in operative position during substantial deformation of said traveler under the stresses of operation.
2. In the device defined in claim 1, the upper end of said sleeve being provided with an outwardly beaded edge.
