It will be obvious that the structure described incorporates the large tubular nut "31 which constitutes a very important ther evident that turning the shaft 23 independently of the movement of the locking nut 31 will result in positioning the ram 7 either inwardly or outwardly with respect to the vertical passage of the blow-out head or casing. It will be observed that the locking nut 31 is provided with the flange or shoulder for preventing the possibility of its-being screwed completely out of the'sleeve 18. Of course, the packing nut 21 functions in an obvious mannerto compress the packing 22 about the enlarged portion 25 of the shaft 23 so as to prevent the escape of fluid. It will also be observed that the shoulder 26 on the enlarged portion 25 of the shaft 23 in the said cases adapts it to abut the shoulder 36 of the ram 7. The packing nut 21 is easily reached through the opening 19 in the sleeve 18, radial holes 36 being provided in the periphery of the flanged portion of the packin nut to permit insertion of a turning tool.
In Figures Land 4 appear stud bolts 38 which project radially through the side of the cylinder 6 for engaging in a groove in each of the rams .7 for preventing turning of the rams in the operation of rotation of the shaft 23.
Inasmuch as each side of the preventer attachment described herein isidentical in construction, the description of one is deemed suflicient to describe the other, it being understood that one is useless without the other and that they cooperate to bring about the result sought.
It is to be definitely understood that we .do not desire to limit the application of this invention to the particular modification set out herein to illustrate the principles thereof, and any change or changes may be made in materials and arrangement of parts in the structure consistent with the spirit and scope of the invention.
What is claimed -is s 1. A blow-out preventer of the type described comprising in combination a standard ram head havingthe ends of its horizontal cylindrical portions interiorly screwthreaded, a cylindrical block'screw-threaded into each of tl: said horizontal portions having in turn'screw-threaded thereinto another block having shaft packin means in its outward end, a shaft slida le through said 1 blocks, a hollow sleeve screw-threaded to ex-- tend axially outward from said other block the outward end portion of which is interior- 1y screw-threaded. a, locking nut slidable on a reduced portion of said shaft and engageable with said interiorly screw-threaded portion of the sleeve and adapted to be rotated to abut a shoulder formed by said reduced portion of the shaft with the balance of the shaft to prevent outward movement of the shaft, said shaft being connected at its inner end with one of the rams in the ram head.
2. A blow-out preventer of the type described comprising in combination a standscrew-threaded to extend axially outward from said other block the b itward end portion .of which is interiorly screw-threaded, a locking nut slidable on a reduced portion of said shaft and engageable with said interiorly screw-threaded portion of the sleeve and adapted to be rotated to abut a shoulder formed by said reduced portion of the shaft with the balance of the shaft to prevent outward movement of the shaft,said shaft being connected at its inner end with one of the rams in the ram head, said inner end of theshaft being reduced and screwthreadedto engage in the ram, and the shaft having means at its outer end for rotating the same to move the ram independently of the locking nut.

A blow-out preventerof the type described-comprising in combination a standard ram head having the ends of its horizontal cylindrical portions interiorly screwthreaded, a cylindrical block screw-threaded into each end of the said horizontal portions having in turn screw-threaded thereinto an- I other block having shaft acking means in its outward end, a shaft sli able through said blocks, a hollow sleeve screw-threaded to extend axially outward from said other block the outward end portion of which is inter riorly screw-threaded, a locking nut slidable on a reduced portion of said shaft and engageable'with said interiorly screw-threaded portion of the sleeve and adapted to be roing the same to move the ram independently shaft having means at its outer end for rotatof the locking nut, and a' fluid connection through each of said cylindrical blocks communicating with the interior of the ram head for .introducin fluid under pressure behind each of said rams.

A blow-out preventer of the type described, comprising in combination a standard ram headhaving the ends of its horizontal c lindrical portions interiorly screw- 5 threaded: a cylindrical block screw-threaded into each end of the said horizontal portions having in turn screwthreaded theremto ana other block having shaft packing means in.
