This invention, generally stated, relates to a building construction and has more especial relation to a suspended ceiling of precast tiles of suitable material.
One object of the present invention is to provide a ceiling structure of this character in which the ceiling slabs may be repeatedly positioned by unskilled labor.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a ceiling of this character in which the precast slabs have overlapped, in-
terlocking connection with one another.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide a ceiling structure of the character stated in which use is made of specially designed clips for interlocking the suspended slabs with respect to channel irons.
V A still further object of the present inven- '20 tion is to provide a ceiling structure of the character stated in which the mechanic erecting the slabs may conveniently and rapidly attach the slabs in secure position against movement by merely snapping small metallic clips over the channel irons without the necessity of tools.
Other and further objects of the present invention reside in the provision of general details of construction and in the arrangement, combination, and connection of parts for attaining the results sought by the foregoing objects.
The invention consists of the novel construction hereinafter described and finally claimed.
The nature, characteristic features and scope of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming part hereof, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary view, principally in longitudinal section, illustrating precast ceiling slabs as suspended beneath a floor;
Fig. 2 is a View in cross section taken upon the line 22 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of one of the clips showrrin the foregoing figures.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown in the accompanying drawing one form thereof which is at present pre- 1931. Serial No. "538,405.
ferred by me, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the reference numeral 10 designates a concrete floor supported upon steel beams 11. Ar-
ranged beneath the beams 11 and at right angles with respect thereto are channel irons 12. Suspended from the channel irons 12 and arranged at right angles with respect to the channel irons 12 are other channel irons 18.
The channels 13 are suspended from the channels 12 by means of wire clips 14. The reference numeral 15 designates precast slabs of suitable material, which slabs if desired may be reinforced by wire mesh 16. These slabs 15 are provided with lower flanges 17 and upper flanges 18, as best seen in Fig. 1. When the slabs 15 are arranged end to end,as shown in said figure, the upper and lower flanges 17 and 18 overlap. In 'addition to the flanges the slabs 15 are grooved as at 19 to accept the lower portion of a. special form of metal clip about to be described. o
This clip, as best seen in Fig.3, comprises a one piece stamping and consists of a flat body 20, the lower end of which body has stamped out therefrom oppositely disposed feet 21. The upper portion of body 20 is turned over upon itself to provide an elon-. gated rest 22, which rest has depending therefrom in parallelism withthe body 20 a flange portion 23. Stamped out from the flange 23 isa tongue 24 which is preferably somewhat tapered, as shown in Fig. 2, and is inwardly projected to provide a more or less resilient construction. The feet 21, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawing, are extended in oppositely disposed relation at right angles to the body 20. These feet 21 are arranged in parallelism with one another and are so arranged as to accept the ends of adjacent precast slabs 15. Adjacent each of the feet 21 the body is apertured as at .to provide nail openings whereby a mechanic may readily nail the clips with respect to the slabs 15.
A description will now be given of the manner of suspending the ceiling s1abs15. The mechanic takes a clip of the type illustrated in Fig. 3 and fits the upper end thereof over a channel 13 so that the rest 22 abuts upon the top of the channel iron 13 and snaps the clamp to place so that the resilient tongue 24 engages beneath the upper flange of the channel. A clip of the character stated comprising an integralstructure made up of a single blank having a vertical, flat body the bottom of which is providedwith oppositely disposed horizontally arranged wings and the top of which body is bent over to form a relatively hook-shaped portion, the pendant portion of which bent-over portion has stamped therefrom an inclined tongue, said body having stamped therefrom oppositely disposed wings arranged in a plane above the first mentioned wings, the combined wings being-arranged to accept the ends. of adjacent precast ceiling slabs.
2. In a building construction, in combination, a floor of cementitious material including steel beams for supporting same, superimposed channel irons arranged beneath said beams, said channel irons being disposed at right angles to one another, precast-ceiling slabs arranged beneath the lowermost of said channel irons, said slabs being each provided with clip engaging grooves and means including metal clips for engaging in a resilient manner said lower channel irons for engaging said grooves for detachably supporting said slabs.
3.- In a building construction, in combination, a floor of cementitious material including steel beams for supporting same, superimposed channel irons arranged beneath said beams, said channel irons being disposed at right angles to one another, precast ceiling slabs arranged beneath the lowermost of said channel irons, said slabs'being each provided 5 .with clip enga 'ng grooves and means including metal clips having hook-like flat tops to prevent slab rocking, said clip engagin right angles to one another, precast ceiling slabs arranged beneath the lowermost of said channel irons, said slabs being each provided with clip engaging grooves and means in cluding metal cli s for enga 'ng snapfashion saidlower &annel irons ir supporting said-slabs, said clips having feet for cooperatively engaging the grooves in said slabs.
5. In a building construction, in combination, a floor of cementitious material including steel beams for supporting same, superimposed channel irons arranged beneath said beams, said channel irons being disposed at right angles to one another,'precast ceiling slabs arranged beneath the lowermost of said channel irons, said slabs being each provided with clip en aging grooves and means including metal 9 ips for engaging snap-fashion said lowerchannel irons for supporting said slabs, said clips engaging the slab grooves and being provided with holes for nail receps tion for making attachment to said slabs.
6. A- clip-of the character stated comprising an integral structure provided with a vertical flat body the bottom of which has oppositely disposed'horizontal feet and the top of which body is relatively hook-shaped and is provided with a pendant vertical portion, having stamped therefrom an inwardly directed resilient tongue.

A clip of the character stated comprising an integral structure provided with a ver tical flat body the bottom of which has oppositely disposed horizontal feet, and the top of which bodyis relatively hook-shaped for engaging over a channel iron and is provided with a pendant vertical" portion having stamped therefrom an inwardlydirected resilient tongue for engaging beneath the upper flange of a channel iron. 8. A clip of the character stated conipris ing an integral structure provided with a vertical flat body the bottom of which has oppositely disposed horizontal feet for engaging a groove of a ceiling slab, and the top of which body is relatively hook-shaped and is provided with a pendant vertical portion having stamped therefroman inwardly directed resilient tongue. A clip of the character'stated comprising an integral structure provided with a vertical flat body the bottom of which is apertured for nail reception and has opposite- 1y disposed horizontal feet, and the top of which body is relativel hook-shaped and is provided with a pen ant vertical portion having stamped therefrom an inwardly directed, resilient tongue.
10. A clip of the character stated comprising an integral structure provided with a vertical flat body the bottom of which has oppositely disposed horizontal feet, and the top of which body is relatively hook-shaped and is provided with a pendant Vertical portion having stamped therefrom an inwardly directly, resilient, inclined tongue.
