MEPLAGEL I IN WINDMILLS.
Specification forming part of Lettere Patent No. 189,146, dated April 3, 1877; a. plication filed February 3, 1877. v
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIAS STATA, of Capo Viucent, in the county of J efi'erson and State of New York, have invente'd. a new and Improved Windmill, of whch the follo'wing is a specification:
Figure 1 is a vertical secbon on line 00 a: in Fig. 2. Fig. 2 -is a plan.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
- My invention consists in che oombination of a hoop or shield and a governor With a vertical wndmill, in such a way that the aoaiou of the governor applies a portion of the power of the mill 110 rais'e the said shield, exposng more or less of the wheel to the action of the wind, thus controlliug its motion.
A is a vertical wind-wheel,supported'on the shaft a, aud provided with diagoual Vanes or fioats 1). The shaft a rests in a stop, a, in the cross-creo (7, and is provided Wth a jourmal-box a1: its upper end in the oross-tree e. Uhutes f are arranged in a frame surrounding the wheel A, which direct the current of wind upon the wheel. The cross-trees, supporting the wheel and the ohutes, are supported'on a solid frame, B. 0 is a sheld or hoop that encircles the chutes, aud is caparble of covering them entirely. in is provided With the guides g, thau sfide easily on the ways h, that are attaohed to the corner-posts of the frame B. D D are oords attaohed to the lower edge of the shield. O, aud r un over the pulloys z 6, and are provided With counter-weights j, that slide in the tubes E. F 15 a vertical shat't, haviug a stop in the cross-tree d, aud a bearing at ins upper end in the bar k, which runs across the frame A. A pulley, 1, is fixed to this sha.ft, and takes moton from a pulley on the shaft a through a belt, m. G is a winding-drum, plaoed loosely on the shafi: -F, aud capable of sliding up or down on it. The upper end of the drum G and the lowe r side of the pulleyl form frictiousurfa.ces, so that whe u the drun1 is forced upward against; the pulley ii: is made to revolve with it. o o are ropes running off from opposite sides of the drum G. The rope o runs around the pulleys 10 and q, and over the pulley 1*, and is attached to the lower edge of the slide 0. The rope o runs under the pulley s (shown in dotted lines) and over the pulley t, and is attached to the lower edgqof the shield C al; a point opposite the point of attachmen; of the ropo o. The pulleys p, q, r, 8, and t ara ali supported by the frame B.
E is a governor, hewing a lower bearing in the cross-tree d, and an upper bearing in a parti ofthe fra-me B. The shaft u is moved up and down as the balls v 17 are acted upon more or less by oentrifugal foroe. Thye governor receives its motion by means of a bella, w, from a pulley on the shaft; a.
A 1ever, I, is placed under and parallel to the cross tree d. lt is pivoted in a hangar, J, that is fixed to the cross-trae, zm 1 is oapable of beng operated by pressare from the lower end of the goveruor-shaft: M. A yoke, K, is plaoed under the drum G, aud attaohed -to the lever I, so that as the shaft: M in the governor is depressed it raises the drum G. L is a rope runung over the pulley y, and under the pulley 2, and around the drurn G.
The operatiou of rr.y improved windmll is as follows: The shield O being down, so as to expose the chutes f to che action of the Wind, the windentersthem and is direoted. against the wheel A, whioh revolves With a force and speed proportionate to the velocity of the wind.
When the mill reaohes its maximum velocity any increase in speed. causes the governor ho mise the drum G, and press it with more or less foroe again st the wheel l, whioh imparts its motion to the drum, and windsthe ropes o 0 more or less, thus rasiug the shield. O, shutting ofi' a, porton 01" the Wind-supply, and preveutug an increase of speed. As the pressure of the wind dimnishes the pressure of the drum G agaiusbthe wheel l is decrease'd, and the shield U drops, exposing more of the wheel no che actiou of the wind. ll1e sheld C con be raised more or less by pull'ug the rope L, aud it m-ay be retaiued at anydesred height by makiug tbe rope fast.
Having thus described my iuvention, I olaim as new and desire to seoure by Letters Pataeut+ 1. A wind-wheel provided Wit;h a shield,
self-regulating, and covex:ing the whole there- 4. The combination of the weights j, rape of, substantially as shown and described. D, tube E, pulley 1', and shield O, as sho'wn 2. The combinatou of the governor H, 10- and described.
ver I, windng-drum G, wheel l, ropes o a,
a.nd shield C, substantially as shown a.nd de- ELIAS STATA. [L. 8.] scribed.
3. The combination of the rape L, pulleys Witnesses-z 31 and z, and winding-drum G, substantially HENRY PEE. as specified.
WILLIAM ANTIIONY.
