Description

Dec. 13, 1932. E. A. GAST LAWN TRIMMING DEVICE Filed Jan. 13, 1932 dimmig w fll'forny.
Patented Dec. 13, 1932 UNI-TED STATES PATENT OFFICE ERNEST ALBERT GAST, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO LAWN TRIMMING nnvron Application filed January 13, 1932. Serial No. 586,261.
provide a simple, eiiicient and inexpensive tool whereby the edging of a lawn along a walk or similar area may be accomplished with a minimum expenditure of time, effort, and labor.
Further objects of my invention will appear from the following detailed description thereof.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a top view of my invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective of the device showing same in operation.
The numeral 1 indicates a frameconstructed of metal or other suitable material. The frame 1 consists of end sections 2 and 3 and an oblique section 4. The section 2 is bent at right angles to form a section 5 which terminates in a short section 6 parallel with section 2. The sections 2 and 6 provide bearings for a shaft 7, the outer end of which has rigidly secured thereto a pinion 8. Secured in the section 5 is a stud 9 which serves as an axis for a traction wheel 10. The inner face of the wheel 10 is provided with gear teeth 11 arranged to intermesh with pinion 8.
Threaded into the section 3 of the frame is a bolt 12, and onto the end of the bolt 12 a socket bearing 13 is threaded. The shaft 7 is tubular and the inner end is notched as shown at 14. Mounted in the bearing 13 and the tubular shaft 1 1 is a brush 15 the ends of the core 16 of said brush extending respectively into the bearing and shaft. A stud 17 formed by one of the wires of the core being bent at the end engages in a notch 1 1 so as to cause the brush to rotate with shaft 7.
Mounted on the oblique section 4 of the frame are cutters 18, these consisting preferably, though of course not necessarily, of discarded safety razor blades. It is also apparent that where the blade is specially constructed for the device a single blade may provide the entire cutting edge.
Secured to the section 2 of the frame by means of bolts 19 is a bracket 20 to which a handle 21 is secured.
The operation and use of my device are as follows:
The operator pushes the device with the traction wheel 10 riding along the edge of the walk 22, or other structure beside which the grass is to be trimmed. Rotation of the trac tion wheel operates the brush 15 in the counter clockwise direction as'viewed in Figure 2. The brush during rotation raises the grass along the edge of the walk and brushes it toward and against the cutter 18 and holds it securely enough for the cutting edge to sever it. The device thus trims the grass neatly along the edge at the walk level.
Insofar as the operator is concerned, the work involves on his part merely the pushing of the device. In this no stooping or other irksome toil are involved, and the great expenditure of time, effort, andlabor hereto fore incident to the trimming of such edges is thus obviated.
Aswill be seen the cutting edge of the device may be readily renewed at anytime merely by changing the blades 18, of which the average person has normally a constantly renewed supply in the form of discarded safety razor blades.
hen the brush 15 becomes too much worn or it is desired to change blades, the brush may be readily removed merely by unscrewing the bolt 12 a short distance which withdraws the bearing 13 so that the brush may be taken out and a new one inserted.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the character specified comprising a frame, a cutter carried by said frame, a non-cutting member movably mounted in said frame, and means for the movement of said member, whereby objects to be out are moved against said cutter.

3. A device of the character specified comprising a frame, a cutter carried by said frame, a brush rotatably mounted in said frame, said cutter being disposed obliquely relative to said brush, a traction wheel mount ed on said frame, and means whereby the rotation of said wheel is arranged to rotate said brush to move objects to be out against said cutter.
4. A device of the character specified comprising a frame, a cutter carri s by said frame, a brush rotatably mounted in said frame, a traction wheel mounted on said frame, means whereby the rotation of said wheel is arranged to rotate said brush to move objects to be out against said cutter, and a handle for the operation of the device.
5. A device of the character specified comprisin a frame, a cutter carried by said frame, a brush rotatably mounted in said frame, said cutter being disposed obliquely relative tosaid brush, a traction wheel mounted on said frame, means whereby the rotation of said wheel is arranged to rotate said brush to move objects to be cut against said cutter, and a handle for the operation of the device.
6. A device of the character specified, com prising a frame consisting of an oblique section andparallel sections at the ends of said oblique section, a cutter carried by said oblique section, a brush rotatably mounted between said parallel sections, a traction wheel. mounted on said frame, and means whereby the rotation of said wheel is arranged to rotate said brush to move objects to be out against said cutter.
7. A device of the character specified, com prising a frame consisting; of an oblique section and parallel sections at the ends of said obl que section, a cutter carried by said oblique section, a. brush rotatably mounted between said parallel sections, a traction wheel mounted on said frame, and means whereby the rotation of said wheel is arranged to rotate said brush to move objects to be cut against said cutter, and a handle for the operation of the device.
8. A device of the character specified, com prising a frame, a safety razor blade secured to said frame, a brush rotatably mounted in said frame, a traction wheel mounted on said frame, and means whereby the rotation of said wheel is arranged to rotate said brush to move objects to be out against said b ades.
9. A device of the character specified comprising a frame, a safety razor blade secured to said frame, a brush rotatably mounted in said frame, said razor blade being disposed obliquely relative to said brush, a traction wheel mounted on said frame, and means whereby the rotation of said wheel is arranged to rotate said brush to move objects to be cut against said blades.
10. A device of the character specified comprising' a frame, a safety razor blade secured to said frame, a brush rotatably mounted in said frame, a traction wheel mounted 011 said frame, means whereby the rotation of said wheel is arranged to rotate said brush to move objects to be out against said blades, and a handle for the operation of the device.
11.
