5 The object of the present invention is to provide an improved sand delivering and packing apparatus which will ensure the uniform packing of the sand closely around the pattern, which can be easily manipulated or 1 controlled by hand, and which allows a wide range of adjustment or variation of theposition or angle of the sand delivering and rainming device as may be required, besides being capable of being readily transported or moved to different parts of the foundry.

section on line In carrying out the preferred form of the invention, as shownin the drawings, disposed across the foundry is an overhead gantry 1- (Figure 1) of H-section, beingcomposed of top and bottom channel members anda vertical connect ng girder of I-section. Running upon this gantry is a carriage 2 (Figures 1 and 2) having two pairs of horizontal roll-J ers 3, 4, respectively engaging the inner faces of the side flanges of the-top gantry channel and the outer faces of the side flanges of ihe bottom gantry channel; and the said carriage also carries a pair of vert cal rollers 5 run-= ning on the top face of the bottom channel of the ganry. The carriage 2 supports a vert cal cylinder. 6 forming a housing for a rotatable cylindrical chute 7 (Figure 3) having a flange 8 at the upper end mounted on ball or roller bearings 9 at the top of the housing 6. A main conveyor band 10 runs the length of the foundry, being parallel with and supported by rollers upon the gantry 1 and sand deposited upon fih's conveyorcan be delivered into the chute 7 by means of a pivoted'plough 11 pivoted upon an upward ex-- tension part 12 of zhecarriage 2 and conveniently operated by a solenoid 13 upon the housing 6, so that when this plough'is low-' cred on to the conveyor sand will be delivered by it on to a fixed'chute 14: on i. he carriage and thence into the open upper end of the rotatable chuz e 7. The upward eXtens'on 12 of the carriage may also hear electric contact or slipper devices 15 for conveying current from overhead conductors 16 (Figure l 1') to the motors employed upon the machine. From the lower end of the chute 7 the sandis discharged on to another band conveyor 17 mounted one frame 18 which is pivoted at I 19 upon a bottom extension part 20 fixed to the chute 7 (Figure 3) as to turn about a horizontal axis whereby the ends of the said conveyor 17 and its frame can be raised or lowered. The angular adjustment of the conveyor frame 18 is effected by worm gearing, comprising a worm wheel or sector 21 on the said frame engaged by a worm 22 on brackets 23 fixed to the lower part of the chute 7, the said worm being adapted to be rotated by the molder by means of a chain 24 or the like operating the worm through gearing 25 (Figure 2). At one end of the conveyor frame 18 an electric motor 26' is mounted for driving the conveyor 17, and at the other end is a bracket 27 carrying an annular support 28 for a rotatable vertically-disposed hopper 29, (see Figures 12 and 13) the latter having a top flange 3O resting on ball or roller bearings .31 mounted upon the upper face of the annular support 28. The hopper 29 is provided at opposite sides with outwardly-presented horizontal channels 32, closed at the ends, and forming tracks or guides for pairs ofrollers 33 carried at the upper end of a double-sided depend'ng frame 34. The chan nels 32 are maintained horizontal and the depending frame 34 vertical by pivoting the bracket 27 of the hopper support 28 to the conveyor frame 18, as at 35, and extending it above'said frame, its upper end 36 being connected, by a link member 37, to the bottom extension 20 of the chute 7, said link 37 be'ng parallel to the conveyor frame 18. A parallel-link control device is thus provided for the horizontal channels 32, the conveyor frame 18' constituting one link.
The sand from the conveyor 17 is discharged into the hopper 29 and falls through a telescopic chute, of which one part 38 is pivoted at 40 to the said hopper 29 while the other part 39 is pivoted at 41 to lugs or links 42 at opposite sides of the open top of a receiving trough or box 43 pivoted about a horizontal axis 44 between the sides of the lower part of the frame 34. The lower open end of the telescopic chute 38, 39, is thus situated over the trough or box 43, and the sand descends into the latter. This trough 43 is carried by and opens into a horizontal feed conduit 45 into which sand from the trough can pass; and within the said trough and feed conduit is a'rotary conveyor screw 46 secured upon a shaft 47 which passes through a gland in the side wall of the trough and through a sleeve 48 carried by the said trough, the said sleeve terminating in a gear-box 49 containing worm gearing 50 by means of which the said shaft 47 is driven from an electric motor 51.
The sand is conveyed by the screw 46 through the conduit 45 to the end of the said conduit that is remote from the trough 43 and the said end opens into a chamber52 provided with a depending sleeve 52,which is swivelly connected to a rotatable vertical delivery conduit 53 by means of a coupling sleeve 53 suitably fixed to conduit 53, such as by set-screws. The conduit 53 is adapted to turn about horizontal axes at right-angles to one another. For this purpose the cham ber 52 is provided with a horizontal trunnion or pivot 54 (Figure 9) at right angles to the axis of the horizontal conduit 45 and turning in a bearing=55 provided in an angle bracket 56 having a boss 57 surrounding and adapted to swivel upon the said horizontal conduit 45 between collars 58. The end of the horizontal conduit 45 carries a rotatably-mounted partspherical cup 59 engaging and relatively angularly movable within a similary shaped socket part 60 on the chamber 52, the engaging parts being flat at the sides, as shown in Figure 7. The delivery conduit 53 can thus be swung about the axis 54 as a centre, in the plane of the conduit 45; or about the said axis of the conduit 45 as a centre by the swivelling action of the bracket 57 and part- 59 upon the said conduit 45.
Theive-rtical delivery conduit 53 contains a feed or conveyor screw 61 closely fitting the conduit and having a rotatable tubular shaft. The screw terminates at its lower end adjacent to a delivery chamber 62 attached to the bottom of the conduit, the extremity of the said chamber being contracted to form a rectangular nozzle 63. Vithin the delivery chamber 62 is aram 64 for packing the sand. This ram has a head of rectangular contour guided during its reciprocating motion by its ends sliding within channels (35 provided in opposite sides of the chamber 62 and nozzle 63 (see Figures 4, 6 and 7 The ram head is carried by a shank 66 which is a driving fit upon a vertical rod 67 passing axially through the tubular shaft of the feed screw 61, within which it can be reciprocated. For this purpose its upper end is surrounded by and can freely turn within a non-rotatable sleeve 68 with which it is compelled to move axially. This sleeve extends and can slide through a cap 69 closing the top of achamber 70 at the upper end of the conduit 53, the said sleeve being provided with a quickpitched helical groove or slot 71. The upper end of the sleeve is coupled by an arm 72 (Figure 11) to an external slide 7 3 movable in a vertical guide 74 on the outside of the chamber 70. This slide 73 is adapted to be reciproeated by a connecting rod 7 5 operated by a crank pin 76 on a pulley 77 which is mounted on the outside of the chamber 52, in alignment with the horizontal pivot 54 about which the said chamber can turn, and which is driven by a belt, band or the like 7 8 (Figures 1, 4 and 9) from the electric motor 51. The helical groove or slot 71 of the sleeve 68 on the ram rod engages a pin or stud 79 (Figure 8) on the inner member 80 of a pawlandratchet or other one-way clutch, the outer member 81 being carried by a sleeve 82 (Fig ure 4) connected to the upper end of the vertical feed-screw 61. The arrangement issuch that when the ram ascends the helical groove or slot 71 causes the rotation of the outer clutch member 81 and thus the screw 61, and thereby a given quantity of sand is delivered by the screw to the nozzle 63 and into the lower part of the delivery chamber 62 immediately above the nozzle. On the down stroke of the ram, the helical groove or slot 71 is inoperative upon the feed screw owing to the reversed motion of the clutch, and thus the said screw remains stationary and no more sand is delivered while the ram descends and forces the sand in the delivery chamber through the nozzle and packs it in the mold around the pattern. right through the nozzle or its stroke may terminate when it is flush with the end of the nozzle.
The delivery conduit 53 may be provided with a suitable handle by which it can be held by the molder so as to direct the sand and the ram to the required part of the mold. The position at which the sand is delivered and packed may be va 'ied by tilting the de livery nozzle about its horizontal axes. either laterally or longitudinally with respect to the horizontal conduit; or by swinging the machine about the axes of either of the hoppers or chutes 29, 7, according to the radius of swing required; or by traversing the depending frame 34- along the horizontal guide channels or uracks 32, as shown by dotted" lines in Figure 12; or by traversing the whole machine bodily in a lateral direction along the overhead gantry 1. as shown by dotted lines in Figure 1.
To avoid entanglement of the electric leads of the motors when the machine is rotated, the hopper 29 may carry, upon an upstanding rod 83, a cylin ler 84- provided with slip rings co-operating' with brushes in an enclosing housing 85 mounted on the bracket'QT, the brushes being connected by leads to the mo tors, switches and, the like. Similarly, the
chute 7 carries, upon a rod 86, a cylinder 87 provided with slip rings co-operating with brushes in a housing 88 carried by the part 12.
By reason of the swivel connection of the conduit 53 to the part 52 and of the swivel connection of the rod 67 to the sleeve 68, the said conduit 53 with the ram can be turned about the axis of said rod. 67 in order that the ram may operate in recesses or corners of the pattern and to follow the contour thereof.

ber, automatic mechanical means for causing sand to be delivered intermittently in predetermined quantities into said chamber, and mechanical means for operating the ram, after each delivery of sand, to discharge sand from the chamber and pack it into the mold.
52. A sand molding machine comprising a conduit, means for feeding sand into the conduit, a delivery chamber at one end of the conduit, a sand delivering device in the conduit, a ram within tie delivery chamber, automatic means for causing the sand to be delivered into the delivery chamber intermittently in small quantities, and means for op-- erating the ram, after each delivery of sand, to discharge sand from the delivery chamber and pack it into the mold.
3. A sand molding machine comprising a conduit, means for feeding sand into the con: duit, a delivery chamber at one end of the con.- duit, said chamber terminating in an outlet nozzle, a sand feeding device within the conduit, a reciprocating ram guided for movement within the delivery chamber and nozzle, automatic means for operating the feeding device in the conduit to cause the sand to be delivered into the delivery chamber intermittently in small quantities, and means for operating the ram, after each delivery of sand, to dischargesand from the deliver I chamber and through the nozzle and to pack it into the mold.
4. A sand molding machine comprising a sand delivery conduit, means for feeding sand into said conduit, a sand feed-controlling device within the conduit, a ram within the conduit, means for reciprocatin the ram, and means for operating the feed-controlling device only on the upward stroke of the ram to deliver a given quantity of sand, the ram acting on its next down stroke to pack the said its next down stroke to discharge the delivered sand through the nozzle and pack the same into the mold.
6. A sand molding machine comprising a sand delivery conduit, means for feeding sand into said conduit, a delivery chamber at the lower end of said conduit said chamber terminating in a nozzle, a sand feed-controlling device within the conduit, a ram guided for reciprocating movement. Within a given quantity of sand, the said connecting means being inoperative on the feed-controlling device during the down stroke of the ram, said ram acting on each said down stroke to discharge the previously delivered sand through the nozzle and to pack the same into the mold.
7. A sand molding machine comprising a sand delivery conduit, means for feeding sand into said conduit, a delivery chamber at the lower end of said conduit, a rotary conveyor device within the conduit for controlling the delivery of sand into the delivery chamber, a ram guided for reciprocating movement within the delivery chamber, means for reciprocating the ram, a one-way clutch device having one member connected to the rotary conveyor device and another member operatively connected to the ram through a helical driving device, so that during the upward stroke of the ram the conveyor is rotated through the helical device and clutch to deliver sand into the delivery chamber, while on the down stroke of the ram the clutch and conveyor device are inoperative and the previously delivered sand is discharged from the said chamber by the ram.
8. A sand molding machine comprising a sand delivery conduit, means for feeding sand into said conduit, a delivery chamber at the lower end of said conduit, a rotary conveyor device within the conduit for controlling the delivery of sand into the delivery chamber, a ram guided for reciprocating movement within the delivery chamber, a non-rotating reciprocating rod carrying the ram at its lower end, a oneway clutch device having an outer member connected'to the rotary conveyor device, and a helical device on the ram rod slidable through and operatively engaging an inner member of the clutch device to cause rotation of said inner member during reciprocation of the ram, the clutch being operative only during the upward stroke of the rain to cause rotation of the conveyor device and the delivery of sand intothe delivery chamber, the said conveyor device remaining stationary during the down stroke of the rain which then discharges sand from the delivery chamber.
9. A sand molding machine comprising a sand delivery conduit having a delivery chamber at its lower end, a conveyor device within said conduit, a ram-guided for reciprocating movement within the delivery chamber, means for reciprocating the ram, means for operating the conveyor device only on the up stroke of the ram to cause sand to be delivered into the delivery chamber, a lateral feed conduit leading into the delivery conduit, and a sand feed device within the said lateral conduit, said delivery conduit being angularly movable about the said lateral conduit.
10. A sand molding machine comprising a sand delivery conduit having a delivery chamber at its lower end, a conveyor device within said conduit, a ram guided for reciprocating movement within the delivery chamber, means for reciprocating the ram, means for operating the conveyor device only on the up stroke of the ram to cause sand to be delivered into the delivery chamher, a lateral feed conduit leading into the delivery conduit, and a sand feed device with in the said lateral. conduit, said delivery conduit being mounted upon and angularly movable about'the lateral conduit, and said lateral conduit being pivoted about a horizontal aXis to admit of varying the height of the delivery conduit.
11. A sand molding machine comprising a sand delivery conduit having a delivery chamber at its lower end, a conveyor device within said conduit, a ram guided for reciprocating movement within the delivery chamber, means for reciprocating the ram, means for operating the conveyor device only on the up stroke of the ram to cause sand to be delivered into the delivery chamber, a lateral feed conduit leading into and angularly movable relatively to the delivery conduit, horizontal guides, and a frame adapted to travel on said guides, said lateral feed conduit being pivoted upon said frame about a horizontal axis.
12. A sand molding machine comprising a sand delivery conduit having a delivery chamber at its lower end, a conveyor device within said conduit, a ram guided for reciprocating movement within the delivery chamber, means for reciprocating the ram, means for operating the conveyor device only on the up stroke ofthe rain to cause sand to be delivered into the delivery chamber, a lateral feed conduit leading into and angularly movable relatively to the delivery conduit, a chute for supplying sand to the lateral feed conduit, means for supporting the chute and permitting of rotation thereof about a vertical axis, horizontal guides carried'by the chute, and a frame adapted to travel on said guides, said lateral feed conduit being pivoted upon said frame about a horizontal axis.
18. A sand molding machine comprising a sand delivery conduit having a delivery chamber at its lower end, a conveyor device within said conduit, a ram guided for reciprocating movement within the delivery chamber, means for reciprocating the ram, means for operating the conveyor device onlyon the up stroke of the ram to cause sand to be delivered into the delivery chamber, a lateral feed conduit leading into and angularly movable relatively to the delivery conduit, a chute for supplying sand to the lateral feed conduit, a bracket rotatably supporting the chute, a frame carrying the bracket, a conveyor mounted on the frame said conveyor being adapted to deliver sand to the chute, horizontal guides carried by the chute, and a depending frame adapted to travel on said guides, said lateral feed conduit being pivoted upon said depending frame about a horizontal axis.
14. A sand molding machine comprising a sand delivery conduit having a delivery chamber at its lower end, a conveyor device Within said conduit, a ram guided for reciprocating movement Within the delivery chamber, means for reciprocating theram,
means for operating the conveyor device only on the up stroke of the ram to cause sand to be delivered into the delivery chamber, a lateral feed conduit leading into and angularly movable relatively to the delivery conduit, a chute for supplying sand to the lateral feed conduit, a bracket rotatably supporting the chute, a frame carrying the bracket and adjustable about a transverse horizontal axis, a conveyor mounted on the frame said conveyor being adapted to deliver sand to the chute, horizontal guides carried by the chute, and a depending frame adapted to travel on said guides, said lateral feed conduit being pivoted upon said depending frame about a horizontal axis.
15. A sand molding machine comprising a sand delivery conduit having a delivery chamber at its lower end, a conveyor device within said conduit, a ram guided for reciprocating movement within the delivery chamber, means for reciprocating the ram, means for operating the conveyor device only on the up stroke of the ram to cause sand to be delivered into the delivery chamber, a lateral feed conduit leading into and angularly movable relatively to the delivery conduit, a hopper rotatable about a vertical axis, a telescopic chute between thehopper and the lateral feed conduit one part of said chute being pivoted to the hopper and another part being pivoted to the said feed conduit, horizontal guides carried by the hopper, and a frame adapted to travel on the guides, said lateral feed conduit being .pivoted upon said frame about a horizontal axis.

A sand molding machine comprising a sand delivery conduit having a delivery chamber at its lower end, a conveyor device within said conduit, a ram guided for reciprocating movement Within the delivery chamber, means for reciprocating the ram, means for operating the conveyor device only on the up stroke of the ram to cause sand to be delivered into the delivery chamber, a lateral feed conduit leading into and angularly movable relatively to the delivery conduit, hori zontal guides, a parallel-link control means for maintaining said guides horizontal, and

19. A sand molding machine comprising a sand delivery conduit having a delivery chamber at its lower end, a conveyor device Within said conduit, a ram guided for reciprocating movement within the delivery chamber, means for reciprocating the ram, means for operating the conveyor device only on the up stroke of the ram to cause sand to be delivered into the delivery chamber, a lateral feed conduit leading into and angularly movable relatively to the delivery conduit, a chute for supplying sand to the lateral feed conduit, a bracket rotatably supporting the chute, a frame carrying the bracket and adjustable about a transverse horizontal axis, gearing for angularly adjusting the frame, a conveyor mounted on the frame said conveyor being adapted to deliver sand to the chute,
horizontal guides carried by the chute, and a depending frame adapted to travel on said guides, said lateral feed conduit being pivoted upon said depending frame about a horizontal axis.
20. A sand molding machine comprising a sand delivery conduit having a delivery chamber at its lower end, a conveyor device within said conduit, a ram guided for reciprocating movement within the delivery chamber, means for reciprocating the ram, means for operating the conveyor device only on the up stroke of the ram to cause sand to be delivered into the delivery chamber, a lateral feed conduit leading into and angularly movable relatively to the delivery conduit, a chute for supplying sand to the lateral feed conduit, a bracket rotatably supporting the chute, a frame carrying the bracket, a conveyor mounted on the frame said conveyor being adapted to deliver sand to the chute, a chute carrying the conveyor frame and adapted to feed sand to the conveyor, a bracket rotatably supporting the chute and adapted to run upon an overhead support, a main conveyor for supplying sand to said chute, horizontal guides carried by the firstnamed chute, and a depending frame adapted to travel on said guides, said lateral feed conduit being pivoted upon said depending frame about a horizontal axis.
