' JAR COVER WRENCH Filed April 6. 1951 IN VEN TOR.
A TTORNE Y.
Patented Dec. 13, 1932 v PATENT OFFICE RUDOLPH IRATZLAFF, OF IDEABIBORN, MICHIGAN JAR COVER WRENCH Application filed April 6, 1931. Serial No. 528,040.
This invention relates to jar cover wrenches and an object ofthe invention is to provide a wrench for removing from or tightening threaded covers on fruit jars,
' 5 which comprises only two main pieces and which is so constructed as to permit a great pressure to be applied to the cover to prevent the same from slipping in the wrench.
Another object of the invention is to provide a wrench which is composed of a minimum number of stamped parts thus providing a wrench which is cheap to manufacture and easy to assemble.
Another object of the invention is to provide a wrench composed of one ring like piece provided with an extension forming one handle and further provided with a serrated por-,
tion on the inner periphery of the ring portion for gripping the cover and a second piece pivoted at two points to the ring like portion and provided with an extension forming another handle and further provided with a serrated portion for gripping the portion of the cover diametrically opposite to that gripped by the serrated portion on the ring, when the two handles are moved toward eachother.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a means whereby the flange on the open end of a jar cover may be straightened so that the same may be used again without permitting any leakage of air between the jar cover and the rubber washer against which it seals.
These objects and the several novel features of the invention are hereinafter more fully described and claimed and the preferred form of construction by which these objects are attained is shown in the accom panying drawing in which- Fig. 1 is a plan view of my improved wrench.
r Fig; 2 is a detail of the movable portion of the wrench. I
Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawing it will be i seen that the wrench comprises the two main pieces 1 and 2 formed preferably of stampings. The member 1' is provided with the ring like portion 3 and the inner periphery of the same is provided with the serrations 4 for grip'pingthe cover of a fruit 'jar (not shown) and is further provided with the notched portion 5 for a purpose to be later described. It will be understood that the in ner diameter of the ring like portion 3 is slightly greater in diameter than the outside diameter of the ar cover on which it .is to be used, and the inner points of the serrations 1 lie on an imaginary circle the radius of which is approximately equal to the radius of the jar cover so that all of the points of the serrations will grip thecover at the same time. An extension 6 is provided on the outer periphery of the ring 3 providing a 5 handle or grip.
The member 2 isprovided with the arcuate portion 7 provided on its edge with the serrations 8, the portion 7 lying in the notch 5 and the serrations 8 on the edge thereof lying in the same plane as the serrations 4 on the inner periphery of the ring like member 3 and positioned diametrically opposite thereto. The portion 15' of the member 2 is depressed an amount equal to the thickness of metal of the member 1 and is provided with the elongated slots 9 and 10 extending at an angle toward eachother, and through which the respective pins or rivets 11 and 12, provided in the ring like portion 3, extend. The pins or rivets 11 and 12 being less in diameter than the width of the slots 9 and 10 permit the same to have free movement therein. The member 2' is provided with the extension 13 lying in the same plane as the handle 6 and forms a grip or handle to permit the same to be moved toward the handle 6 when it is desired to grip a cover to tighten or loosen the same on a fruit jar. It will be seen that by the wrench to permit the same to be screwed from or onto a jar onto which it is desired to afiix the same.
It will be seen that the pin positioned in the slot 9 permits the member 2 to move freely thereabove and will permit a far greater amount of pressure to be applied to the jar cover than that which is applied to the handles 6 and 13.
By referring to Figs. 1 and 3 it will be seen that a plate is secured to one face of the ring like member 3 and is provided on the inner edge with the upturned flange 21. 'A pair of pins 22 and 23 are also provided upon the same face of the ring like member 3 and form guides to engage the periphery of the flange of the cover and the upturned portion 21 will engage over the flange of the cover and upon rotation of the same under the flange 21 any kinks or irregularities therein will be smoothed out thus permitting the cover to be used a large number of times, as it has been the pract ce heretofore to discard the'covers when the flange on the open end has become irregular, as it is then impossible to properly seal the interstice between the cover and the ar.
From the foregoing description it becomes evident that I have provided a ar cover wrench, which is composed of a minimum number of parts and which is easy to assemble and which will firmly grip ajar cover to remove the same from a jar without any undue pressure being applied to the handles.
Having thus fully described my invention, its utility and mode of operation, what claim and desire to secure by Letters. Patent of the United States is 1.
