CLEAN-OUT BIT FOR SAND PUMPS Filed April 2, 1930 INV'ENTOR Y I BY Georgl IZMY/rr i v ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 6, 1932 UNITED ,STA

PATENT. mm
enonen w. MILLER, or sAruLPA, OKLAHOMA CLEAN-OUT BIT FOR sannrumrs Application filed April 2, 1930; Serial'N'o. 441,047.
My invention relates to bailers and more particularly to a drill or bit attachment for use in combination with a bailer, the principal object of the invention being to provide a removable drill or bit element forreadily replacing the bailer bottom ordinarily supplied.
It is a further object of my lnvention to 1nclude improved means for unloading from the bit element the dbris and liquid collected in the bailer.
In accomplishing these and other objects of my invention I have provided improved details of structure the preferred form of which is illustrated in the accompanymg drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a vertical section'of the lower end of a well hole partially cased, and in which is shown in elevation a bit element embodying i my invention, attached to a bailer.
with casing 2, a bailer 3 being suspended in the well from, a sand line 4.
The combination tool includes a tubular bailer member 5, and a bit attachment 6,
' adapted to be removably attached to the lower end of the bailer by a bayonet joint 7, and comprisingthe invention of my present application. V
The bit element includes a head 8, a body portion 9 and a reduced neck 10 on its upper end provided with lugs 11 adapted to engage slots 12 formed in the lower end of the tubularbody member and terminating lateral slots or sockets 13. The bayonet joint thus formed is held in locked position by a sliding plate vl4seated in dove-tailed grooves 15 of the body member andlatched inopen or closed position by. pin 16 engaging notches 17 or 18 selectively.
. An interior channel 1 element, and communicating with the channel of the tubular body, terminates at its lower r ns in the bit 4' 4- end in branch outlets 20 and 21 opening to opposite sides of thebit headandcommunt.
cating respectively with tapered faces 22 and 23 converging in a cutting edge 24.
Cooperating. with a valve seat 25, formed slightly, above the branch outlets by anenlarged chamber 26 inthe interior channel 19, is a flap valve 27, mounted on apivot pin 28; a lateral discharge port 29 ofthe enlarged chamber "being provided with a notch 30 for receivingthe hinge bea'ring 31- of the valve. The outer surface otthe bitmember surrounding the discharge port is flattened 'to form a plane face 32 to snugly contact with theflatinner face; 3310f a closure door 34,
.hinged at its upper end by a bearing boss 35 seated in a socket 36 of the body portion and mounted on a pivot pin 37.1-Areinforcing rib 38 on the inner lower edge of; the door is adapted to engage a cooperating-tangentialgroove 39 of-the bodyportion when-the door isclosed.- f
Various means may be .provided for se-,
curely retainingt'he door in closed position but I have illustrated for this purpojse'a bolt 40,-threadedJ-into an opening 41 of the bit element adjacent the door opening, and includ- 1 ing a head 42 having a tool slot'43'; the bolt head, normally projecting overthe lower edge of the door, being flattened as at 44 to permit opening. and 'closingof the door. 1
j To compensate for the thickness of the bolt head, the door and'bit are recessed as indi{ cated at and respectively, sothat no forced through the open valve.
projections will extend beyond the outer sur face of the bailer body to interfere with operation thereof. I I
When a bit element, constructed and assembled as described, is attached to a bailer and lowered into a well, liquid and dbris is forced through the outlet branches against the flap valve, opening the valve and flowing into the continuous channel of the bit element and bailer. Hardened formation is broken up by the cutting edge of the bit as in ordinary cable drilling practice and is likewise Upon upward movement of the bailer the flap valve immediately closes, trappingthe charge within the tool. The baileris then elevated to the top of the well and the charge is released therefrom by opening the door 34.
Because of the location :of the trap valve near the bottom of the tool, a maximum amountof space is available within the tool for containing the dbris as it is'elevated from the well.
'Due to the structure of the swinging door, the bailer may be readily relieved of its contents, and the necessity'of removing the bit element from the bailerbody to discharge contents therefrom is eliminated.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination with a barrel'having a side opening, a 'fiatface about the opening nel below the side openingg'a door pivotally and a groove at one end of theopening, a valve for closing the barrel channel adjacent the bottom of the side opening, a door on the barrel adapted for closing the'side opening and having a rib adapted-to seat in said groove, anda latch on the barrel co: operativewith the door to retain the door in. closedposition. i V 7 '2, In combination with a'barrel having a side opening and a groove at one end of the opening, a valve for closing the barrel chanfor retaining vthe door in closed position.-
5. In combination with a round barrel having a side opening, a socket leading from the upper end of the opening and a flat face sur-- rounding the opening, a valve for closing the barrel channel adjacent the bottom of the side openlng, a door for said opening having a boss hingedly mounted in said socket, the inner surface of the door being fiat to seat on the flat face surrounding said opening and the outer surface of the door being curved to conform to the curvature of the barrel when the door is closed, and latching means for retaining the door in closed position. 1
In testimonywhereof I aflix my signature.
' GEORGE W. MILLER.
mounted on the barrel adapted for closing I the side opening and'having a rib adapted to seat in said groove, and latching means/cooperative with the door and barrel to retain the side opening, a door hinged at its upper end to the barrel adaptedfor closing the side opening and having a rib 'adapted to seat'in said groove, and latchingm'e'ans on the barrel
